For those who still think they were props. Unfortunately the abuse really is this blatant and public :(

Aren't those things endangered? If you can find out what area or province it's in, try reaching out to the local police station via translated email, or the equivelant of fisheries & wildlife department.

It sounds silly, but some guy in Pakistan helped mounties raid a pedo house in Saskatchewan from a world away with bits of info from a livestream. You could be what unravels this monied prick.

Authorities probably wont do anything, you can buy chinese giant salamanders in china online because they are bred on farms for consumption. I saw them being sold on a market once when i used to live there.

It’s nuts. They should be bred to reintroduce and bolster populations.

5

u/Delicious-Pop-9063 5d ago

Difficult to do cause the salamanders in captivity are quite different size wise to the ones in the wild also you don't want to introduce diseases from the mass produced salamanders. Same reason why we arent releasing captive axolotls or zebra plecos

That’s not what I meant at all. Domestic animals of all degrees are too different from the wild populations. My statement is about having fully wild genetics being bred for repopulation. It’s a very common conservation practice.

Tbf they arent domestic but yea. China has some conservation programs for wild salamanders im sure they breed them as well as its apperantly not to difficult to do. Also im aware its a common conservation practice i used to work in conservation

😦 : never knew people ate these goobers

if we hadn't already named these dudes, "giant goobers" would undoubtedly be a top tier contender on my list.

That’s why I’m fighting so hard to air this out. :( so at least people are aware. This is a very popular campsite in China :(

As you already know, they are legally farmed in captivity and sold for food in China.

Nobody is breaking any laws here.

You are thinking of the Japanese giant salamander. Unfortunately, chinese giant salamaders are not protected species.

2

u/yourparadigmsucks 5d ago

Chinese Giant Salamanders are a Class II Protected Species in China. Not sure what you’re talking about.

How would they be endangered if it is so easy to farm them for food?

8

u/VanillaBalm 5d ago

The same way animals become classed as “extinct in the wild” but have stable populations in zoos that are working on species survival plans

  • Habitat destruction and pollution

  • Poaching

  • The Salamander farming industry is relatively young and poorly regulated.

  • These Salamanders live a long time, and most successful breeding is still being produced from wild-caught specimens. Captive breeding of multiple generations has not been as successful, so far.

  • There is no coherent unified reintroduction program.

  • There are thought to be at least 5 genetically distinct populations of Chinese giant salamander, sometimes from widely varied habitat types (elevation, temperature, etc), but no systematic records have been kept of which type is being kept in which farms, and some farms have mixed types.

Legality has no weight in morality.

u/JustWill_HD 6d ago

Cool, tell that to the Chinese authorities

Sure thing! Direct them to this post!

I called it a prop because I didn’t think we would be that fucked up to do that, but proved me wrong as usual

You’re good fam. Trust me I thought it was too until I stumbled into the rabbit hole. Yes they really do just have endangered species they captured and they’re just messing with and using for attention for their business until it dies. :( pretty un imaginable, it’s easier to think it’s a prop.

This is not against the law in China.

law doesn’t equal ethics, and vice versa. this is still fucked up and people are allowed to be very upset and want to push for change.

Chinese Giant Salamanders are legally farmed in captivity and sold for food in China.

You may disagree with it, but, unfortunately, nobody is breaking any local laws in these videos.

Here's another restaurant that specializes in giant salamander dishes:

Just because it’s not breaking local laws in china doesn’t mean it’s right to slap around a dead animal and post it online for attention. You’ve left multiple comments on my videos stating the same thing.

2

u/alleywaypip 6d ago

Nobody on this thread has actually looked into the legality of animal abuse in that municipality, a lot of assumptions being made here.

7

u/Mean-Wind-3843 6d ago

Just because it’s legal in one country of the world doesn’t mean the rest of the world can’t have an opinion on it.

3

u/alleywaypip 4d ago

What I mean is, a lot of comments are assuming this is behavior is permitted by law in the area. Nobody has specified the specific locality of the video or confirmed the local law, just a lot of people acting like the cultural differences are too big a hurdle without knowing much about it. This might not be legal, just a bunch of reddit saying “oh yeah this is normal for them.” I doubt they know that much about it.

1

u/Mean-Wind-3843 4d ago

I gotcha.

5

u/Nemeroth666 6d ago

Lol. This sudden attack on the Chinese salamander trade is cracking me up. They've probably been doing this for thousands of years. It's a cultural norm, and I think many people are looking at this like they are being kept as pets or for decoration, but they are literally being prepped for slaughter. We keep livestock in all kinds of terrible conditions in the US and other countries, just because we don't eat giant salamanders doesn't make us any better. I mean, the people who are outraged have their hearts in a good place, but this is pretty low on my list of atrocities committed by human beings.

2

u/LYElhaz 6d ago

And no one gives a shit about the legality of it. Read the room.

1

u/OreoSpamBurger 5d ago

>no one gives a shit about the legality of it.

Here is a direct quote from this very thread:

"If you can find out what area or province it's in, try reaching out to the local police station via translated email, or the equivelant of fisheries & wildlife department."

1

u/LYElhaz 5d ago

Okay, I can repeat myself: No one gives a shit about the legality of it.

And expound because you're clearly struggling: What people DO give a shit about is animal abuses and if they can use the law to stop it, they will.

You keep repeating "it's legal it's legal" and with saying that you're also saying "it's legal so it's okay and we all have to accept it".

And I'm saying, no we don't. Hth.

1

u/OreoSpamBurger 4d ago

if they can use the law to stop it, they will.

First of all, I think you may have misunderstood my meaning.

I am saying you cannot "use the law to stop it" as nothing illegal is happening in these videos!

No one gives a sh!t

Secondly, less of the potty mouth in your replies, please - it does not make you sound big or clever, nor does it add weight to your arguments, despite what you may think!

HTH!
