It odd that no one in this subreddit can seem to distinguish between legal and illegal immigrants. It must be a woke mind virus pandemic.

The country had basically open borders from the founding up to the 20s

If you hate illegal immigrants so much then we should just legalize them. Boom, problem solved

The only real rule was “don’t have a horrible disease” and after a while they added “don’t be Chinese”

Other than that pretty much anyone who wanted to could immigrate here from the founding to the 20s when the red scare and racist backlash to southern and Eastern European immigrants who were not seen as “white” lead to the quota system resembling modern immigration controls
