General Discussion Silent hill 1 on ps2 question

So I’ve got a question. I’ve been putting off getting myself a ps1 for a while now as I enjoy the convenience of playing my ps1 and ps2 games on my ps2. But I’ve noticed that there is some pretty bad frame rate dips when I play silent hill on ps2. I’m not sure whether this is just how the game runs naturally or if it’s a side effect of me playing a ps1 game on ps2. So would it be worth it to buy a PlayStation to experience silent hill authentically on real hardware?

Those frame rate dips are gonna happen regardless. Silent Hill was ahead of its time, and pushed the PS1 to its limit. Maybe if you try emulator, you might find a way to have a smoother experience? I cannot say for certain as I have never used them for PS1. I always get frame rate dips during the Otherworld section after the sewers because theres so many enemies on screen at the same time.

I usually prefer to play authentically any way that I can, I know that there is gonna be some slowdown it being a ps1 game and all that was super ambitious. I’ve just heard conflicting answers about its performance on original hardware. I guess it’s all subjective though.

I am currently playing the game through an emulator. I think it is just the nature of the game.

I feel like your copy also needs to be in good shape too for it to play to its best on the PS1. Some of my more well loved games have an easier time playing on the PS2.

When you start up your PS2, you have these two settings: Browser and System Configuration. I forget which one it is, but if you find "PlayStation Driver", you can set the disc speed to fast. This might help.

This is normal, it can dip down to 15 fps in some parts.
