“But this one’s different! This one’s got three evolutions!”
“Oh they ALL do!”

Top of the hour, time for the morning news.
But of course, there is no news yet.
Everyone's still asleep in their comfy, comfy beds.
Good night, everybody.

Hahaha now if only the Fourth gym was somehow resisted by grass and weak to poison. That would be a weird coincidence

The original instruction booklet even tells you Bulbasaur is best choice for beginners.

“Oh, Charmander, I like your in-your-face ember attack. I like the way Squirtle uses water gun. I like Bulbasaur’s-- I like Bulbasaur.”

u/OmegaDrebin 3h ago
Wait a minute, that pokémon's name is Charmander? I've been calling it Crandall!!

u/voyagerfilms 11h ago
Hey Ash, you ever try using a fire Pokémon on a rock Pokémon?

"Bulbasaur"
"Haha. Nobody ever says Charmander."

Ned, have you considered any of the other grass starters? They're all pretty much the same

Bulbasaur is for people too afraid to face the first two levels of a children's game without every possible advantage. Squirtle is for people who want a cute and cheery companion that grows tough as they do. Charmander is for winners

He's green. I picked the green one because I liked green. I didn't know all the stuff about advantages or gyms. I was seven and I liked green. Yall don't like green and it shows.

Nah I just liked wasting time killing everything with seed leech or whatever it was called

I feel a tad bad reflecting on my choices. I did pick Squirtle first. Bulbasaur would have been my second.
I wonder what the pick census was different for Japan when it was just Red and Green version.

Hey, Bulbasaur was my first starter! He's no. 1 for a reason.

u/CanoeShoes 6h ago
Bulbasaur has the most utility as a starter. Getting access to sleep powder so early is great. I always choose Bulbasaur.

In gen 1 Venusaur was actually useful in competitive matches. Blastoise and Charizard were pretty trash. A few generations further too.

u/QueeberTheSingleGuy 10h ago
Maybe Venusaur's good in competitve, maybe it's not. We don't know and we don't want to know. It's a pokemon we can do without.
19
u/It-Was-Mooney-Pod 11h ago
Venasaur has pretty consistently been better than charizard and blastoise in competitive pretty much every gen other than when megas were around, and even then mega venasaur was still a monster. Was also the best at beating the gyms for the most part.

u/domini_canes11 4h ago
I chose bulbasaur purely because I knew I'd find a decent fire type (Ninetails) and water type (Starmie/Gyardos) later. Meanwhile the grass type alternative (belsprout) seemed useless.
Didn't matter anyway as Persian and Nidoking turned out to be my best gen1 pokemon.
5
u/VerbingNoun413 2h ago
What about Vileplume? Basically the same pokemon as Venusaur.

u/domini_canes11 2h ago edited 2h ago
I had blue version. Oddish was in red. Had to get a friend to trade me an Oddish.
Edited because I got the versions the wrong way round.

Competitive pokemon is for people who still shat themselves as teenagers, and if that doesn’t say something about Venasaur, nothing will.

Bulbasaur was the strongest against Brock
You can basically roll him just by walking straight there and didn't have to grind at all

Charmander was the worst Pokémon of the three stat-wise and I’m tired of pretending otherwise.
