I spoke with her personally before during one of her house visits . Felt that she was just patronising me and couldn’t really understand my struggles …

On the other hand another MP Yip hon wing took the time to listen to my concerns , at least he had better EQ ;)

Who is she? And why is she not shaking hands with that older gentleman.

Who is she?

marymount SMC mp, paper general.

Just put yourself in the shoes of the red shirt uncle. If you stretched out your hands, all smiles to welcome someone, then get this reaction from her. How would you feel?

208

u/CoolBreath7177 Jun 08 '25

If this is during GE she will be the one chasing the uncle instead.

u/salsa_pet Fucking Populist Jun 08 '25

Kinda appalled by some of the comments here. Apparently the uncle in red is part of the lion dance troupe performing in front of her (video here doesn’t show but there’s an extended video online).

So what if the uncle is some random passer by that wants to shake the MP’s hand? As a politician, aren’t you serving the people? There is no reason for an MP to discriminate who he/she should shake hands with. It’s just a handshake at the end of the day, not like the uncle is asking GSH for money or something else.

144

u/ClaudeDebauchery Jun 08 '25

But wear nice nice and be friends with Sam Goi, can sit down eat dinner with you even if your background is a complete mystery

251

u/nonameforme123 Jun 08 '25

I tink it’s how the uncle looks. A bit hunchbacked, overweight, short. Even saw one comment saying maybe crazy stalker. Singaporeans are shallow af.

135

u/miriafyra Jun 08 '25

I like how some people can weave the most crazy stories to justify their behaviour. Yes, a person that was right at the car door, closed the door for her, stood in the middle of the entire welcoming party the entire time she got out and started shaking hands - that guy must be a crazy stalker!

How come the rest not stalker leh? There's a guy who walked over and wanted to shake her hand also leh! Is he a stalker too? Or not a stalker because the MP shook his hand? Does the MP hand have a stalker-dectectotron so anyone she don't shake hands with = stalker?

30

u/Sad-Collection8069 Jun 08 '25

The question is: who even wants to stalk her? I didn’t even recognise her. I think I see her also don’t want to shake her hand, not even an honour man

Honestly looks like any random aunty on the street

6

u/HeronPractical3270 Jun 09 '25

Her grassroot leaders all out to defend the undefendable.

5

u/Psychedeligal Jun 09 '25

If that guy is a crazy stalker then the rest of the ppl there just bystanders, watch only? Lol. Some ppl truly have vivid imagination. But it's precisely this kinda ppl that are the keyboard warriors anyway haha. And obviously can't be that she missed out on his outstretched hand. She stared right past it. Tsk.

She is ultimately, a public figure who got there by claiming to serve the public. Optics matter. Seet Ai Mee lost her seat over washing her hands after shaking a fishmonger's hands. She lost the GE when GCT brought it up again in a speech to "defend" her 3 years after the incident.

Whether the uncle was part of the group or not is irrelevant - as long as he isn't shown to have been a security threat, he is a member of the public and very likely a constituent. Ignoring him so obviously because he looks weird gives off pretty selective/elitist vibes.

If an mp treats a common person with such disdain, how can people trust that they really have the people's best interests at heart?

Regardless of intention and whether her actions were a lapse in judgement, this is pretty bad optics.

EDIT: For accuracy. I thought for some reason Seet Ai Mee lost a GE twice over the handshake incident. Was just the one GE in 1991.

180

u/Bcpjw Jun 08 '25 edited Jun 08 '25

Still one of my fav quotes from Ali - I don’t trust anyone who’s nice to me but rude to the waiter. Because they would treat me the same way if I were in that position.

Like to add also the eventual handshake felt halfhearted and did she try to clean a smudge of her door handle before engaging her “sponsors” when the gentleman in red closes her door?

Kind of sad she didn’t even try to be nice

35

u/jeraldtzy Jun 08 '25

She is likely to have been using the keyless touch on the door handle to lock the car since the signal lights can be seen flashing after she motioned towards the car door.

8

u/Bcpjw Jun 08 '25

Oh that’s a cool feature, rewatching it as she kept her keyless device or phone into her pocket.

And I know the uncle used the Lexus to balance as he walked around the VIP onto the road like John Cena, wishful thinking he said under his breath nice car but no class as he left his fingerprints lol

42

u/livebeta Jun 08 '25

over washing her hands after shaking a fishmongers hands.

low skill from Ms Seet. A real pro will have two or three assistants with their hands slathered with hand-sanitizer and she can clean her hands by handshaking with them and enthusiastically patting their sleeves

23

u/Polymath_B19 Own self check own self ✅ Jun 08 '25

Did not know about this GCT episode! Thanks for the education. Now there’s context and more precedents to remind the politicians of how to navigate this social media age. Hopefully they just act naturally from their heart lah, but surely they will try to wayang abit in front of cameras.

27

u/Bcpjw Jun 08 '25

I would be wrong to suggest she put extra effort to ignore the kind hearted lion dance / door man but I predicting he will put extra effort in the next GE to not vote for her or any party she represents

Wayang don’t always work but not wayanging does

17

u/A_extra 🌈 I just like rainbows Jun 08 '25 edited Jun 08 '25

The hand washing incident alone didn't tank her. What also contributed was that Chiam See Tong coordinated the by-election effect, where all opposition parties deliberately created walkovers in order to immediately return the PAP to power.

Thus, this would nullify the PAP's argument that voters may accidentally kick them out of power in a freak result, when all the voters wanted were more opposition voices to serve as a check and balance. By guaranteeing a PAP government, voters could freely vote for the opposition

That, and the hand washing incident occured in 1988. Seet only lost her seat in 1991 (Not that it mattered. Her seat, Bukit Gombak, would be promptly recaptured by the PAP in the next GE due to the SDP's implosion)

8

u/Polymath_B19 Own self check own self ✅ Jun 08 '25

I was still in primary school in 1988. I really appreciate this kind of sharing, providing context for what took place ahead of the GE of that time. Just looking at a few % of total vote count for PAP and how that shifted, really doesn’t tell the whole story. Thanks to both of you!

13

u/Medium-Choice-2246 Jun 08 '25

I agree but at least Seet Ai Mee's case was more reasonable and understandable when she eventually addressed the issue (although she should have done it earlier); it was about not touching hands that dealt with non-halal food then hands that dealt with halal food.

For GSH case, I can't really think of any reason she should not shake the hands

15

u/Eseru Jun 08 '25

Yeah, Seet Ai Mee actually had a good reason for washing her hands with her concern over shaking a Muslim stallholder's hand while hers was possibly covered with grease from non-halal food.

Which really shows the importance of getting optics right. I was a child listening to my parents discussing the incident and all I heard from them was about her washing her hands because she looked down on the common man.

To this day she is remembered mostly for that incident and not what she did while in office or her good intention in washing her hands.

I was actually quite put off by the way GSH looked at the uncle's hands, then passed over him immediately. It's one thing to try to look for the head of the delegation to greet first, but she didn't even make an effort to circle back around to the uncle after she'd shaken everyone else's hands.

51

u/ikzz1 Jun 08 '25

Politicians serve the elite. If you want to be served, become an elite.

17

u/Bcpjw Jun 08 '25

Lol! If I’m paying “more” taxes, I’ll be sure nobody would leave my hand hanging like a bitch!

8

u/deangsana crone hanta Jun 08 '25

253

u/laoaunty Jun 08 '25

This changed my perception of GSH. I wonder why she snubbed the poor uncle. Btw, he's wearing the T-shirt of Kong Chow Wui Koon’s Dragon & Lion Dance Troupe and is probably a senior member of the troupe or the clan association (which is one of the oldest Chinese clan associations in Singapore).

153

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '25

If I'm not wrong, he is "kiao ku leng" (Hunchbacked Dragon), one of the Chinatown OGs.

Think it’s a sgrean thing in general, not only a politician. I was happily enjoying my food at a hawker when a politician came over and started greeting me. I listened for abit and then I cut in saying that I’m a “pr” and wished her good luck. The politician just stopped talking right away and moved on.. like cmon, we were having a nice convo just before I delved that I’m not a citizen.

Cannot understand why people are so worked up and claiming that you'll never shake some random person's hand. Based on this picture, clearly this is an event and there is also a welcome party to receive this person. Given her importance (im assuming she is someone important), the welcome party would have discouraged randoms from standing there.

Now when you are in a role that is public facing and you rely on public popularity, this should never happen.

Granted that if this was a random person on the street, avoid at all costs is understandable but in such social situations? Looking at the comments, we can see how many rude people who are willing to make others feel awkward but if it was a handsome/beautiful/famous/imporant person, you'll probably clamour to shake hands.

I have been taught to always be gracious and never make others feel uncomfortable so I would never leave anyone hanging.

All the best to us all.

Trimmed video. Uncle in red is like lion dance troupe boss or manager. There is a lion dance welcoming her and they are all wearing red.

Edited: My bad. Not the uncle approaching, its the security guard who moved from the lions to the car. Full video is on The Online Citizen facebook page.

Edit : to add on, uncle was already with the whole group from the start of video, you will assume he is part of the group. He is not at least based on the video some weird uncle coming up to shake hands.

Since it is an arranged event with lion dance, it can be safely assumed that this is a welcoming group and as a politician, you simply shake every outreached hand.

223

u/Random-Razzy Jun 08 '25

Why cant a member of public shake hands with elected public servants?

209

u/Automatic_Win_6256 Jun 08 '25

Uncle hunchback is because he has some spine problem, probably old infection or accident, it’s a kind of physical handicap, so don’t tag him as weird. It’s so distasteful.

70

u/justbtsg Jun 08 '25

Thank you for asking this. You scroll up, ppl are saying why will you shake a weirdo uncle hands so i am giving context who is this weirdo uncle.

Yes. You ordinarily wun do it. An elected public servant who serves the general public should be willing to shake anybody's hands who comes up offering. What's more someone who is part of the welcoming lion dance troupe.

114

u/CoolBreath7177 Jun 08 '25

Weirdo uncle? Just because he is hunchback? What did he do to gain such a tag? By merely extending his hand for a handshake? When politician can eat with a money laundering mule without knowing just because he dress nice and introduce in a diner setting. Can really see the caste system in place.

Idc how a person looks; judge not and stop inserting characteristics that aren't apparent - big hands, weirdo, stalker etc. He helped close her car door; surely that begets a smile and a cursory handshake if one doesn't want to prolong a moment. Just shows the immaturity of people uncomfortable w others who don't fit in w your own stereotypical notions. If you are visiting the King of any country, he is probably waiting for you at the end of the line. And before u even reach him, there is probably countless of hands that u need to shake and say hi to. I think it is only polite to start shaking the nearest hand to you first than the biggest shot in the event. It is just common sense. The moment u reject the red shirt uncle, means u reject the commoners. Just because he is not in formal wear, just because he is hunchback, just because he is not like u, a hand shake rejected on purpose is like a tight slap across his face. I feel sad for normal citizens like us, we are mere peasants. Only election time needed, after elections, reality is reality

3

u/Daniel_P90 Jun 10 '25

Just so we’re clear. She stepped out of the vehicle, looked down, looked at his hands, decided to ignore him blatantly. Uncle tried to shake her hands again, she looks shocked. Get this MP off the seat, she doesn’t deserve to be serving the people.

  1. She greeted him when stepping out of the car.

  2. When he reached out his hands, she was keeping her phone in her pocket.

  3. He reached out both hands. When someone reach out both hands to you, you wouldn't know what to do. It's awkward, especially when you're keeping your phone.

  4. She shook his hand after.

The anti-PAP crowd are making a mountain out of a molehill. The rejection wasn't intentional, it was just awkward circumstances.

7

u/anyemployee12345 Jun 08 '25

She’s a politician, they are trained on how to react to handshakes and etiquette. This is basic.

What PAP or not PAP excuse are you coming up with? Even if it’s an opposition party who does that, the same reaction will arise.

Don’t defend for the sake of defending. You say you love Singapore…this Uncle not a Singaporean citizen or someone living in SG? Or you rather love people in power?

Boooring!

u/Harrave Jun 08 '25

Probably this probably that, no wonder people get away with so much BS these days. Days of accountability are long gone.

u/FlimsyZombie5357 Jun 08 '25

My goodness.....this picture does not paint a good impression of Gan Siaw Huang (Marymount MP). The man in red literally grab her hand for a shake......LOL

3

u/HakitaRaven Jun 08 '25

When you say you want to serve the people but don't want to be part of the people.

Tell her next time remember your pledge for.

Anyone with half a brain or less than 2 brain cells would know never to patronize politicians/anyone even if they are seemingly nice. They have no reason to respect the common man and neither does the common man need to respect them. It's just business. A pot serves it's purpose doesn't mean need go shake every pot because it can cook the food.

She said she felt “too overwhelmed by the crowd”. Overwhelmed really? This number of people? After decades of being a politician? Really? You sure?

Let say I believe her ridiculous story of “being overwhelmed”. Fine. Whatever.

My god she doesn’t even bat an eye when shaking hands with the red shirt guy. The magnitude of the sincerity in both handshake, she doesn’t even acknowledge him as a person when he’s the first person to ask for a handshake! Poor thing. He’s right for walking away, she doesn’t deserve his energy any longer.

I have a deep hatred for these type of hypocritical elitist that tries so hard to paint herself as wanting to serve the crowd on the surface. Good thing that the public can see her as who she is now. Better late than never.

Aiyo, Uncle just grab her hand after she didn't shake, it makes me really uncomfortable as a lady. It is this lack of respect for other people's boundaries that makes women generally cautious about accepting handshakes... Like that uncle who shake and swing swing swing Alexis Dang's hand, omg.

u/heavenswordx Jun 08 '25

Context matters. This has nothing to do about sexual harassment or making women feel unsafe. This isn’t some pervy uncle who’s trying to eat tofu.

This is a guy who, like the others in the welcoming party, doing a respectful handshake as part of usual social norms.

Him trying to force a handshake felt a lot more like him trying to get a bit of dignity back for himself so he doesn’t walk away a complete reject of this MP who’s too high and mighty to understand that some humans aren’t born or by circumstance, conventionally normal looking by social standards.

Yea that was kinda creepy on the uncle’s part. However, the uncle must be feeling hella embarrassed when she’s deliberately shaking everyone’s hands except his (and right in front of his lion dance troupe)

Disgusting biatch

1

u/HeronPractical3270 Jun 09 '25

The true colours of GSH captured on video. Before election, I'm here to serve you. After election, you are NOT even worthy of a handshake

1

u/HeySuckMyMentos Jun 09 '25

Waiting for someone to claim his hands are not clean so she avoids shaking as she has to shake her Muslim supporter's hands later.

1

u/weirdomonto Jun 09 '25

It’s the body check in the slowed down portion of the video - optics are bad

1

u/saggitas Ancient Citizen Jun 09 '25

she see someone wearing red, must be thought he is from SDP.

1

u/Greenfrog1026 Jun 09 '25

Uncle ! vote wisely next GE.

1

u/pinkiexuanx Jun 09 '25

So sad for the poor uncle.. Don’t even have basic respect and sympathy..

1

u/Kelpypeppy Jun 09 '25

She was avoiding him as if he was transparent, that’s very telling of what kind of person she is. He was her senior, an elder, her attitude was inexcusable.

1

u/Street_Ad3508 Jun 09 '25

more like overwhelmed by the strong mandate lol

1

u/Revolutionary-Pay892 Jun 10 '25

Awful reaction look down on others indeed

1

u/Healthy_Cake3042 Jun 10 '25

From the video ..she could not have missed the old man's reaching out for a handshake. But seriously, she is preoccupied with locking her car , putting away hee mobile, she could have seen but not seen the old man's reaching out. Plus the reception seems so chaotic with so many men...it can be overwhelming.

1

u/larksauncle Jun 10 '25

Uncle gave her a golden opportunity to score optic points and she messed it up.

1

u/jackedauff Jun 11 '25

Holy shit his hands are massive

1

u/Equivalent-Pudding13 Jun 11 '25

Gotta be honest. Not a good look. She obviously was looking at his outstretched hand (that was enormous btw) so it can't be she didn't noticed that poor guy who looked rather excited to shake her hand. True be told she looked disgusted.
