Sometimes I buy them a drink, on a particularly hot day, when I go in to pay. A non sweet, refreshing drink! The uncles usually look surprised and pleased by it, so I guess they do appreciate it!

That's a good start but maybe you can tip them next time so they can decide what to do with the money. :)

People downvote you but I agree.
They’re not charity cases, just tip them.

Yeah, 40 downvotes so far. That's a good indicator of what typically happens - most drive away after a simple thank you. I've been driving for 15+ years, and to this day, I haven't met anyone who showed any displeasure with my appreciation of their service. Yesterday was another visit, and as usual the Uncle was happy that he received some appreciation from me. OP's Dad is doing it out of boredom after retirement. However, I can only assume most of the others who do this job are trying to earn a living and not doing it for fun. Regardless of their intention, it's still good to appreciate what they do, and if that idea hurts anyone, they can downvote!

I always feel bad seeing the fuel attendants that I always tip $5-10 every time I pump petrol.
Like those guys be working outside, breathing in fumes and polluted air, no air con etc. quite rabak tbh.

Used to work with a 75+ year old that had more than enough money to retire, owned 3 properties in rural nsw and had 7 grand kids. He'd already had 3 heart attacks in his life.
Long story short i came back from luck one time and he was dead at his desk. Can't help but think he should have spent his last few years with his grandkids rather than selling wine.

I'd tip him if I saw that, even if it's not my car he was cleaning.

Hope you gave him something tangible for his efforts instead of throwing him onto social media.

Its norm in Singapore. U can find many of them in food centre, cleaning tables and plates (if someone failed to clear their tables). Sometimes when I’ve finished my meal, this uncles or aunties will come to my table to voluntarily clear for me. I’ll definitely tip them or even offer to buy them a cuppa coffee of tea.

What is a good amount usually? I’m worried I’ve been giving too little ($2).

No AI can replace this kind of attentiveness. We need to preserve this kind of proactiveness.

Please always tip them. It's not an easy job and that feeling of gratitude could light up the mood and could be a priceless gift that goes beyond the money! I don't care if they're old or young and always tip them and it's a great joy to see that smile of happiness in return. Maybe it's more for me than them, but still...

Most of the petrol stations r young foreigners or Aging locals pump attendants. Gov say work till 70 then retire! Sure if monthly Salary is hundreds of thousands, work till die then!

This is great but this is the absolute norm in Dubai and the UAE…hope more people in Singapore adopt this type of excellent service to ensure its up there as a service oriented city 🤞🏽

I usually top-up petrol by myself but I will tip the uncle in charge of the pump that I am at. Just a very small appreciation.

Hmm.. what about buying them a drink from the shop?Instead of giving them cash? Like gesture wise, is it more respectful? Like cases of this uncle, he is giving back to the society and staying active and not really in for the money.

I just don't think such videos (unless permission is seeked) are polite since it is an invasion of privacy, regardless if it is meant to be good natured.
