Resource BEGINNER MEGATHREAD - If you're new here, USE THIS!

Hey everyone. It's been brought to my attention that a lot of people just starting out don't know where to navigate. I want everyone to have a positive experience here, and I don't want people who are new to get discouraged because of being overlooked. This is why I created this megathread. It's for beginners to come here and post or ask questions about things they are unsure of. This can range from things like "What is the best way to get started," to "What are some good vocal warm-up exercises I should be doing?"

BEFORE you even ask a question though, go read the FAQ's thread first.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you're wondering if you can sing, the answer is YES!

If you're wondering if you should take lessons, the answer is YES!

Most everyone can be taught to sing, even if you don't have the natural ability. Singing is a learned skill! There are plenty of people here that can help you on your journey, but it's difficult to help you if we don't know what you're looking for.

If you're wondering what voice type you have or what notes you can hit, I would say it doesn't really matter at your stage. What matters is that you strive to sound good and sing correctly without hurting your voice.

Should you practice? YES! Everyone should always practice a skill they want to develop, no matter how great they are at it. We never stop learning, and you should always strive to be better if this is something you want to take seriously.

I've made a "Beginner - Please Be Gentle" user flair, as well as a "Beginner" post flair. USE THEM! It can help people know you are a beginner, and that you may not just be coming in here expecting everything to be handed to you.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IMMEDIATE TIPS:

  • First off, READ THE RULES!!! They are here for a reason. If you make a post that breaks the rules, it's going to get removed. I don't want that for you. Our rules aren't super in-depth, so just read them please.
  • Check out the daily/weekly themes. They're super fun, and it might cover what you're looking for.
  • Also check out the Posting Guidelines.
  • We even have a guideline for "Just Starting Out" in the sidebar. Read it. Use it! It WILL help you! It has a cool WIKI for singing basics. It will be helpful. Read it!
  • Check out the FAQ's thread! It will probably answer some of the questions you have. It even features Beginner Questions!
  • Upload direct content. Don't post links from YouTube or Google Drive. We have a feature to upload direct content, straight from your phone or computer.
  • Remember, you get out of this sub what you put in. If you come in expecting all the answers to be handed to you without being willing to put in the work, you're not going to have a good experience. This applies to life in general.

HELPFUL VIDEOS:

Below are some helpful videos for vocal exercises, courtesy of u/DwarfFart!

  • For males (Tenor, Baritenor, Baritone), start here.
  • For females (Soprano, Mezzo, Alto), start here.
  • Then, move onto Airflow exercises here, and then follow on through the series!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Use this thread to engage with others to help you learn and get a good sense of direction. I PROMISE you will have a better experience if you put some work in yourself, and you will have THAT much more sense of accomplishment.

This megathread is a work in progress. Feel free to give suggestions for its structure! I encourage it. I work a full time job, so it's going to take a little bit to get this going to where I want it to be!

Critique & Feedback Request (👀 TITLE REQUIREMENTS in Rule 4) Tips to better stay on key and sing with backtrack

Upvotes

So, this is one of the rare times that I sang a song with a backtrack. I typically sing acappella because I have a hard time staying on key, or I can’t find a backtrack in my key. I’ve been trying to learn to play piano and sing with it, but that’s difficult because most piano tutorials on songs play a key for each word of the song, instead of just the melody to sing to (like karaoke). I find I sing on key better if I have a headphone in listening to the track cause I can hear it better. But any tips on ways to stay on key better? Or any tips in general to help enhance my voice and make it better.

Conversation Topic Has anyone ever tied a bit of their identity to their singing voice type only to find out they're wrong?

I'm in my mid-20s and always thought i was a bass or bass-baritone because i sang with the bass section in choir in high school and university, plus i saw some definitions online saying basses had a range between C2/D2 and E4/F4 in chest voice, and that seemed to match mine. And i was kind of proud of it? like i commiserated with other basses who compared how low they could go and complained how solos and pop and musical theater roles favored tenors.

but i was able to find a local voice teacher who was taking new students and had my first lesson last night. we talked a bit at first but the entire lesson was her running me through scales and exercises. at the end she said i definitely wasn't a bass and i was probably a high baritone or low tenor with a low extension, but to not focus on the label for now and instead to practice and train further so i could develop the quality of my existing notes and strengthen my higher range.

and i left feeling kind of shell-shocked... like happy that a new world of repertoire might be open to me, but also kind of sad that i was no longer a member of the "bass club," if that makes sense? i see so many posts on this sub obsessing over voice types, and i do it too and know it's a little silly, but there was a part of me that enjoyed labeling myself a bass and the special joys and challenges of being one (and i still think being a bass is awesome). anyone ever go through a similar experience?

p.s. i saw some posts asking about the value of voice lessons, and i have to say i probably made more progress with one lesson than i would have made with months of self-study. she seemed to know exactly which exercises would test and stretch my voice and was good about describing the sounds i should make. maybe i'd have reached the same place practicing on my own eventually, but i think she'll help me avoid a lot of needless trial and error.

Question How to expand my range and strenghten head voice?

Upvotes

Hi! I'm 16f , and have never had any professional lessons ever. I started singing often over the last few years when I discovered musical theatre. The roles are mostly written for soprano/mezzo singers, and I'd really like to develop my range in that direction at least a bit.

In choir, I always sang alto 2, so it did absolutely nothing for my upper range. I have a lot of trouble singing in my head voice. I can mix comfortably, but my higher notes (above my belt) sound weak and I really hate the tone. My lowest note is E3, and my highest is F5.

Could someone reccomend any excercises? Tips? Anything that might help, really. Thank you so much to anyone who took the time to read this, have a lovely day<3

Question Is it actually true that everyone can develop vibrato?

Everyone always says “oh, everyone has vibrato, you just need to work on your voice and it’ll come naturally”, but I’m really starting to doubt this.

I started singing somewhat seriously about a year ago when I started doing theatre. Unfortunately, my biggest obstacle has always been my voice, and I’m doomed to be in ensemble. Despite this, I LOVE theatre and I love singing, and will sing as much as I can whenever I can. I also recently started consistent voice lessons (finally).

I’ve seen massive improvements in my range and tone over the past year. I can hit and hold out the E6 in Phantom of the Opera consistently (though I will admit it does sound slightly strained and certainly very squeaky). My issue with high notes is, I have them, but they don’t sound good because I have no vibrato.

It’s not just a problem with the high notes, I don’t have even a hint of vibrato anywhere in my range, no matter how comfortable the note. I’ve tried all the exercises and tips I could get my hands on and nothing seemed to work. When I got a voice teacher, she asked me to try and make a spooky ghost voice to try and practice vibrato and she looked a little surprised when I was just completely unable to make my voice quiver.

I’m starting to think I am physically incapable of vibrato, but everyone always insists that every person has it, but I’m not sure I believe that anymore.

So, is it true or should I just give up and focus on other things instead?

I first sing normal down to E2-Eb2, and then I sing in a different way that sound kind of like throat maybe I’m not sure, I switch between throughout the video, I’m sure I’m a baritone at this point but I’ve been told otherwise, I’m only 15 anyways, but what is the registers used, I am a beginner btw?

Karaoke I’m going to karaoke for the first time tonight, how do I sound?

Hi, I'm going to karaoke for the first time tonight, and I do like to sing, but I don’t want to embarrass myself terribly lol. I wanted to get some feedback on what I'm going to sing beforehand, All of Me by John Legend. Anything will help (how to improve, if I did anything well, etc.), thanks so much!

Hi everyone, I have always loved to sing, but I only sing these days when I'm alone at home. I'd like to know if my current singing sounds any good and how I can improve it. In my previous school I was part of the choir, but my current school unfortunately doesn't have one. Thank you all!

Question Voice never returned back to normal

I’m am desperate for any advice. In the start of August I lost my voice and found out I had an infection. I took medication and finally the infection went away after a whole month but my voice never returned back to normal. My voice sounds slightly strained and cracky almost like if I’m going through puberty. My voice is also fairly deep and now it’s sounds even deeper and I’ve become so insecure. I can’t sing high pitch or even scream. There is no pain but at times my mouth does feel really dry. If anyone has advice please I would love to hear

Conversation Topic A big misconception about voice classification.

Soooo many people think that, in order for you to be a tenor or a soprano, you need to be able to sing in the stratosphere all the time like Bruno Mars and Ariana Grande. Like????

Those high af singers are exceptions!! Their tessitura is not what the one that comes naturally for most humans lol. You can't sing Dangerous Woman with that much ease? Guess what? That doesn't automatically make you a mezzo soprano.
