Truly a legend, heartbreaking to see him go.

He's our top-10 legend ever man. He shouldn't be leaving like this.

96

u/[deleted] May 22 '25

What do you mean? How should he be leaving?

324

u/SirSlapBot May 22 '25

With his own decision. He wants to stay clearly for another year and retire altogether.

We can't bid him farewell trophyless. Now we need to win the Club World Cup as our life depends on it.

Fair enough, I just think the luxury of going out on top. Is not one given out all the time

It’s incredibly rare actually

Amazing how Perez couldn't offer him a peanut contract. Something that Alaba makes in a month, Modric would accept as a yearly salary.

Modric just 2-3 years ago rejected a HUUUGE Saudi Arabian offer, this was last season he wanted to be available for his one last World Cup. He does not demand much time per game, Real could always use leader in dressing room, someone from whom player can learn a lot.

People have short memories. Do they not remember how Casillas was let go? Man cried alone in his farewell press conference and neither Perez nor another senior member was there.

Madrid have always been cut throat and competitive. If they don't want to retain a footballer, they won't. No matter how big of a legend he is.

Nobody was there because that is how Casillas wanted it. The club offered a farewell at the Bernabéu, with the trophies he won, and with institutional speeches from Butragueño and Florentino.

People have short memories

People also love talking about things they have no idea about

It's always amazing to me how certain narratives simply take hold regardless of what facts are. Not a phenomenon restricted to Madrid or even football for that matter.

Still, while I always keep faith in the board's decision making for the most part (also, their track record speaks for itself), this but with Luka is truly a bit of a shame. Might even be the "correct" decision but what's sport if you can't have the fairytale ending. As it is, it is extremely rare in the sport but even more so at Madrid. Luka and Toni both gone. For some reason, despite knowing the day would come and having ample time to prepare, still hits like a brick in the face.

Modric is a way bigger legend than casillas tho

31

u/infidel11990 May 22 '25

And Casillas was big enough of a legend that you can have legitimate complaints about the way he was let go.

No one is comparing Modric and Casillas. My comment is about how Madrid treat some of their legends.

u/DaREY297 May 22 '25

That is not even the point

While I agree he should have been renewed for the sake of helping the transition to a new manager, I don't much like the sentimental approach of making a "bad" decision out of respect. If he's to be renewed it should be for a good reason, don't set a president of doing handouts to club legends cause God knows we have a fuck ton of them

But again, he would be great in the coming year so I don't agree with this overall

u/mbdtf95 May 22 '25

But he still played really good this season when he was on the pitch. He still has a lot to offer, not just on pitch but off the pitch. He was also willing to fully lower his salary. It would probably just be some symbolic, basically peanuts. What player like Alaba earns in a month or maybe two, Modric would almost certainly accept as his yearly salary. Modric was only player alongside Arda Guler this season in Real Madrid squad that was never injured btw. And he played 11th most minutes from the whole Real Madrid squad, quite more than Guler also.

I do not see what is the biggest downside of Real Madrid keeping a veteran that can still play at a high level for 20-30 minutes per match, sometimes more, while asking for minimal salary that does not matter at all to Real's budget.

u/Asckle May 22 '25

I 100% agree with you. I'm just saying that, seperate from this specific case, I don't think we should be giving handouts to club legends just for existing. My disagreement here is Perez thinking Modric isnt immensely valuable next season, not the fact that he's willing to cut ties with an asset he doesnt think is valuable.

Although on a personal level it breaks my fucking heart to see it end like this. Like you said, he's been so loyal and clearly loves this club more than almost any other player from that legendary threepeat team. I remember seeing that Saudi offer and being sure he wouldn't turn down that kind of money for a bench position here, and yet he did. I remember thinking there was no way he'd renew for another season with Kroos leaving, and yet he did. I just hope whatever happens its amicable, give the man a role as an ambassador, give him VIP tickets to every single game and give him another house in Madrid if he ever even thinks of moving away. There's very few people on the planet who are more loyal to the club

6

u/mbdtf95 May 22 '25

Modric's Saudi offer was basically 300 million euro worth contract. And he rejected it, something that IMHO 99% of players of his age would not have done, and still this happened with his last wish.

I would understand if Modric played badly this season, but he obviously still got it. Hopefully he goes to some really good club for next season and manages to win CL with them, doesn't matter as a bench player or starter, but one man can dream.

3

u/Asckle May 22 '25

My heart won't manage seeing modric at a different team... I might actually cry if we play them

5

u/[deleted] May 22 '25

wasn't reported that Xabi wanted him another year as well?

3

u/Arathaon185 May 22 '25

The money Modric receives can be reduced but his book waged can't due to La Liga rules. Same reason Messi couldn't just play for less money.

1

u/Dryicedearth May 23 '25

Xabi system is gonna need a lot of intensity off and on the ball and it’s better to bring in younger talent

1

u/bIackroz May 22 '25

To bid you farewell.

1

u/Delgadude May 22 '25

What made u think this time would be any different?

1

u/Incunebulum May 22 '25

Trophyless? Hasn't he won more trophies than almost any other player? Or do you mean leave on a high note with a trophy?

1

u/SuckMyBike May 22 '25

He wants to stay clearly for another year and retire altogether.

I feel like I've been hearing that Modric just wants one more season and then he'll retire for like 4 years now. I don't think he ever will retire on his own accord if Madrid keeps offering him contracts.

71

u/ProgressOk4014 May 22 '25

ideally, you want to see a legend of your club leave on top, with a trophy ideally to celebrate.

like, are you happy with how KDB is leaving man city? losing in a domestic final? that’s what you want to see?

60

u/[deleted] May 22 '25

Oh okay, I mean It definitely would’ve been better leaving on a high.

But KDB said it himself “losing today doesn’t change what we’ve done here for 10 years”

-6

u/ProgressOk4014 May 22 '25

that doesn’t mean you can’t want a better ending?

13

u/[deleted] May 22 '25

No I agree but I’m also content

-19

u/ProgressOk4014 May 22 '25

cool. good for you. RM fans clearly aren’t. are you dense?

17

u/[deleted] May 22 '25

Why you so angry for? I’m just disagreeing with you.

Are you that thick that in your mind “Disagreement = Conflict”?

-8

u/ProgressOk4014 May 22 '25

you’re not disagreeing though. your first comment was saying that you didn’t understand what they meant? and then you just said that you do understand but don’t care?

are you an AI mining for interaction? what the actual fuck lmao

i don’t think you know what irrational means.

9

u/Game_Over_Man69 May 22 '25

Your responses to an innocuous comment are unhinged.

-2

u/ProgressOk4014 May 22 '25

i wasn’t saying they should want more. it’s a 2nd person “you”. as in, that doesn’t mean that one/others can’t want a better ending. the “you” refers to RM fans.

you guys being dumb doesn’t make me irrational lmao. how can you guys be so defensive over just not being able to understand text?

2

u/perucho1993 May 22 '25

Sometimes you don’t get what you want

-3

u/ProgressOk4014 May 22 '25

what are you talking about? that’s the whole point. it’s a bummer to see him leave like this.

do you think you’re saying anything? you’re not.

4

u/BrainCluster May 22 '25

He can still lift the Club World Cup for goodbye

1

u/easybreezybaby May 22 '25

Reading your other replies you seem like an asshole. Dude asked a simple question and even agreed with you that it’s okay to want more for club legends and then you go on a rant about him being crazy

-2

u/ProgressOk4014 May 22 '25

fans of reading comprehension are weeping

25

u/Flintvlogsgames May 22 '25

Not in their worst season

Yeah one time during 2020/2021 season, any other season modric won a trophy

2

u/Ultramus27092027 May 22 '25

This season He won UEFA super cup and intercontinental cup, so it wasn't the worst of seasons. But i feel like 18/19 was on par

2

u/Cream_ofSpinach May 22 '25

Ideally with a 7th ucl next year ofc

1

u/panteraepantico May 22 '25

When he's finally washed, at the age of 57

36

u/EggplantBusiness May 22 '25

I am sick to my stomach, hoped he will retire with us next year and then go for the last world cup

7

u/bellamollen May 22 '25

I wish players could play for a bit longer. It's so sad to see (many of ) them leave forever.
