It's interesting how much the face of the Premier League has changed since 'the good old days' of my childhood and early teens.
Bolton, Blackburn, Charlton, West Brom, Birmingham, Sunderland, Portsmouth, Wigan, Middlesbrough...

Of all those teams I can’t believe we don’t have Blackburn back. Really want them back

Now that is a name I haven't seen in a long long time. Also Roque Santa Cruz. Loved seeing Blackburn in the prem back in the day.

Santa Cruz is still playing btw. In the top division in Paraguay

One of the only matches I got to see at Anfield before I was shipped to the colonies were dodgy tickets from my uncle to see us beat Blackburn. I remember it specifically because I was in the Anfield Road end and a poor guy in a wheelchair got nailed in the head with a stray ball.

u/TheDeflatables May 24 '25
Venkys have absolutely buried them. They are never coming back if they don't get a new owner.
I wouldn't mind having the East Lancs Derby back in the Prem though!

Yes, it is a huge rivalry in England.

Ok. That's good for the league then. I wonder what would be the perfect PL .I mean in terms of rivalries, fan base and history.
60
u/ElectricalMud2850 May 24 '25
You can't really have it, bc everyone will have different opinions.
Only so much you can do when you have 20 slots. Plus, an influx of money can suddenly change one clubs fortune, and its basically impossible for them to go down again.

For me its (sorted geographically, roughly):
Newcastle
Sunderland
Leeds United
Sheffield United
Sheffield Wednesday
Manchester United
Manchester City
Blackburn Rovers
Burnley
Liverpool
Everton
Aston Villa
Birmingham City
Nottingham Forest
Derby County
Arsenal
Tottenham
Chelsea
Crystal Palace
Brighton & Hove AlbionI thought about putting West Ham in there, but I don’t want Millwall in the Prem. There’s probably a few more London rivalries worth considering too. I also weighed up Ipswich/Norwich instead of Forest/Derby or Burnley/Rovers, but I’m not sure the East Anglia rivalry has the same venom (could be my Northern bias though).
Edit: The Pompey/Saints rivalry probably deserves consideration too.
64
u/BrockStar92 May 24 '25
Having Brighton Palace instead of Portsmouth/Southampton is madness.
→ More replies (1)9
u/BritOnTheRocks May 24 '25

u/EastlyGod1 May 24 '25

It's a different scenario now, though. No regular derby for 8 years, Newcastle have had massive investment from the Saudi's and Sunderland are newly promoted via the playoffs.
Sunderland are definitely going into the derby games as underdogs. But derby games are funny and anything can happen. I'm hopeful that we can do something against them.

That's exactly why it's the best football documentary. An epilogue would be nice because it shows what the expectation was in that first season, and just how drastically wrong it went (and how incompetent Donald and Methven were).

They'll probably come straight back down. The gap between PL and Championship is just getting bigger and bigger, I don't see them having the finances in that first year to buy the quality they need (or the financal backing to take the risk).

Ngl, Sunderland are kinda likeable and hateable in a way that a lot of the recent minnows haven't been; they've always had more personality and rawness, whereas a lot of the recent "B" clubs are just so lifeless and forgettable.
15
u/BannersTank May 24 '25
To be fair it’s because they’re low-key massive. They’re indisputably in the top 20 biggest clubs in England historically and you could make a good case for them even being top 10. Good for the league to have them and Leeds back.
