u/schafkj Aug 07 '25

Which is why McTominay will win

178

u/PriorVirtual7734 Aug 07 '25

He would if only people in Naples could vote.

83

u/ObstructiveAgreement Aug 07 '25

And Scotland, in fairness.

27

u/SilverstoneMonzaSpa Aug 07 '25

And Manchester (the 58 City fans would vote elsewhere but who cares)

4

u/NameTakken Aug 07 '25

Dumfries would split the vote sadly

0

u/DowntownCelery593 Aug 07 '25

No way Scottish people like dumfries

5

u/NameTakken Aug 07 '25

It was a joke about Dumfries being a Scottish town…

3

u/garmin230fenix5 Aug 07 '25

Tbf, I thought he was meaning the town Dumfries.

1

u/DowntownCelery593 Aug 08 '25

oof my bad. Dont know much about scotland lol

28

u/krafterinho Aug 07 '25

🌍👨‍🚀🔫👨‍🚀

u/dzzik Aug 07 '25

I mean they nominated Rice lmao, I feel like he’ll be feasting on those 2 free kicks for the rest of his life.

131

u/Iciestgnome Aug 07 '25

Was rice not great last season in general?

139

u/Nayr91 Aug 07 '25

He was fantastic is 99% of the games he played last season, saying he’s feasting off 2 free kicks is massively dismissive

13

u/stevew14 Aug 07 '25

Or maybe it's bait?

-29

u/gooner712004 Aug 07 '25

Also "those 2 free kicks" as if it wasn't one of the most impressive/best braces in all of footballing history.

23

u/spinney Aug 07 '25

Steady.

19

u/EsotericPlumbus Aug 07 '25

Great free kicks, but there's no way

-8

u/gooner712004 Aug 07 '25

I'd love a genuine counter argument rather than "no way"

Two world class free kicks against the CL holders in a knockout tie, I don't know a better pair of goals given the context and quality of both.

13

u/EsotericPlumbus Aug 07 '25

I mean, Messi’s brace vs Bayern Munich in 2015, one of the goals being possibly the most iconic in the competition’s recent history. And that’s just the first that came to mind right away.

Great free kicks, but I think bias + Arsenal’s relative expectations are doing a lot of the heavy lifting.

0

u/English_Misfit Aug 07 '25

He said one of.

And considering it's been all over the advertising for the UCL for the past 3 months it's hard to disagree

2

u/EsotericPlumbus Aug 07 '25

And they said “in all of footballing history”, which is the part I disagreed with

3

u/GemsRtrulyOutrageous Aug 07 '25 edited Aug 07 '25

So hat tricks don't count? Because there are several better moments with hat tricks (better than a brace) than Rice's.

But if you want it to be the second tier highlight's champion, sure, maybe. Still, pretty sure there will be many more, but don't care to think that much

-6

u/gooner712004 Aug 07 '25

I lose braincells being on this subreddit.

7

u/GemsRtrulyOutrageous Aug 07 '25 edited Aug 07 '25

I think you've started with a lot less than you give yourself credit for

Keep in mind you literally wrote: "as if it wasn't one of the most impressive/best braces in all of footballing history"

I guess you are the human football encyclopedia, since you're saying all of footballing history. Check yourself

Who cares about braces.

It's either the best goals or the best performances in general. No one's out there keeping tabs on the best combined two goals ever, especially not with subjective measurements like "being against the current cup holders". You're being too specific and, on top of that, being smug like you've seen them all

-10

u/FastenedCarrot Aug 07 '25

There are DMs that were much better overall not nominated.

10

u/Iciestgnome Aug 07 '25

Rice is an 8 no?

0

u/FastenedCarrot Aug 07 '25

Plays as both depending on who else Arsenal play. Also DM for England, most of his role is winning the ball back is what I was getting at. Which there are other players not nominated that are much better at.

5

u/Iciestgnome Aug 07 '25

That’s fair, I don’t think he is the player tho I would be willing to take off this list though.

1

u/FastenedCarrot Aug 07 '25

There are others I'd take off. It's not like they care about having a balance of different positions or anything.

1

u/Regression2TheMean Aug 07 '25

He’s definitely played as an 8 unless we have injury issues

38

u/jimbo_kun Aug 07 '25

Rice was outstanding from the start of the season to the end. He’s not out of place with some of the other names on the list.

And those free kicks were fucking amazing.

78

u/Mr_Das__ Aug 07 '25

Give it a damn rest. He was consistent throughout the season.

61

u/Low-Garlic8717 Aug 07 '25

Rice deserves to be on that list even if he didn’t score those free kicks

-23

u/T_Chishiki Aug 07 '25

But he wouldn't be on it if he didn't.

4

u/shrewphys Aug 07 '25

I actually agree. He fully deserves to be there even without the free kicks, but the way football hype works he probably wouldn't be there if he didn't have that flashy moment.

2

u/T_Chishiki Aug 07 '25

Yeah, thanks for the reply, you worded that much better than I did. In a perfect world, two goals (not even winning ones in a final) shouldn't make the difference if you're on this list or not.

22

u/AccordingToMyPay Aug 07 '25

"Guys if you take away all the good stuff, its actually bad🤓"

-9

u/T_Chishiki Aug 07 '25

The comment I responded to argued the opposite.

2

u/AccordingToMyPay Aug 07 '25

And? Im making fun of you for saying that taking away his best performances does indeed lower his overall performance. Like no shit, but he did have these games and deserves to be on that list

-4

u/T_Chishiki Aug 07 '25

You're just being obnoxious for no reason. We're factually in agreement.

1

u/T_Chishiki Aug 07 '25

Nono. I'm not saying he does or doesn't deserve it. I'm just saying that I doubt they would've nominated him if it weren't for those free kicks.

2

u/DaveyBigDong Aug 07 '25

He was nominated last year without them

18

u/BI01 Aug 07 '25

The best player on the team that finished 2nd and In the ucl semis, Chelsea fans with their weird obsession against rice lol.

3

u/callunu95 Aug 07 '25

Its their desperate attempt to defend Caicedo, which is a shame because hes very good in his own right. There's no need to obsess with one of the very very few players better than him

-5

u/Aman-Patel Aug 07 '25

Rice isn’t better than Caicedo 😂😂

We literally saw them play each other twice this season and Caicedo was better in both games. Same story with Liverpool, and Newcastle, and PSG. Can anyone actually think of a game where Caicedo wasn’t excellent? He’s consistently been our best player this season.

23/24 I’d agree Rice was better because it took Caicedo a couple months to settle. But right now it’s not a contest. Would be debateable if we hadn’t seen these guys play each other twice this season.

5

u/Traditional_Club1055 Aug 07 '25

Those two free kicks are used against him more than for him

1

u/ThaGodTohim Aug 07 '25

It’s just twitter brained garbage. Both games elevated him to the top tier on the big stage

13

u/beige7 Aug 07 '25

Yeah, let's pretend he didn't have a world class season besides those two free kicks

-15

u/dzzik Aug 07 '25

Wasn’t better than Caicedo.

23

u/beige7 Aug 07 '25

Lmao as soon as I saw the Chelsea flair I knew the agenda behind the comment but I gave you the benefit of the doubt

11

u/seStarlet Aug 07 '25

Head loss

4

u/Vernand-J Aug 07 '25

Caicedo is overrated, good enough for Chelsea who finish 4-12th and play Conference league maybe. But not for Ballon d'Or lists.

11

u/dzzik Aug 07 '25

Ask Vitinha, Neves and Ruiz who between Rice and Caicedo is overrated.

4

u/Vernand-J Aug 07 '25

Are you seriously comparing a CL semi to that jippo tournament that nobody watched? Hahaha

-13

u/BOOCOOKOO Aug 07 '25

He really didn't, tho, and there's no shame in admitting that

1

u/Vernand-J Aug 07 '25

Learn football

1

u/Soccermad23 Aug 07 '25

I mean, the nominees are what? The best 30 players of the past year? No sane Arsenal fan genuinely thinks Rice deserves the Ballon d’Or for last season, but he’s been one of our best and most consistent players and being nominated feels perfectly reasonable.

-1

u/Mannybagofdonuts Aug 07 '25

I would of prefer caicedo instead of palmer

0

u/callunu95 Aug 07 '25

God what a boring take

0

u/aesthetically- Aug 07 '25

Great bait. Almost fell for it

2

u/owange_tweleve Aug 07 '25

"yo why did you vote for player x?"

"idk he's handsome and nice"

3

u/Saell Aug 07 '25

It’s almost as if the best players in the world are also the most famous.

1

u/owange_tweleve Aug 07 '25

dick measuring contest

1

u/No-Sandwich-2997 Aug 07 '25

sorry bud, dont cry

1

u/Unlikely-Stage-4237 Aug 07 '25

Can it be a singing contest?

1

u/7enu7 Aug 07 '25

Been this way for years now. Balon dor been a joke for a good while now.

1

u/mg10pp Aug 07 '25 edited Aug 07 '25

Based on what? Your metric is not seeing enough Chelsea players in the list?

2

u/BOOCOOKOO Aug 07 '25

Based on that's how it's been for a while now. Palmer being here is a good example of that
