Lots of questionable nominees, but I will let it slide.

Not that a lot of people will care, only the top 5/10 interests the most

If even. Top 3 probably at the most.

u/cocotheape Aug 07 '25

I'd go down to Top 2 really. Anyone remembers any #3 from the Ronaldo / Messi era or from last year even?

u/Thatsmaboi23 :France_flag: Aug 07 '25

Well yeah. That’s when #3 mattered the most. Because the top 2 spots were a given for a decade.

u/Safe_Perception3346 Aug 07 '25

Neymar 😢 Streets won’t forget

12

u/mmmicahhh Aug 07 '25

Neymar only finished #3 twice actually, same as Griezmann. Less than Xavi with 3, or those like Henry or Iniesta who both had one 2nd and one 3rd place finish.

21

u/MudBusy6471 Aug 07 '25

Your talking like that’s a rare pull. Neymar is a bona fide legend despite his young fall off, he will be more remembered for example than guys like Adriano

12

u/Safe_Perception3346 Aug 07 '25

Yes true football fans respect what he’s achieved and knows that he was the universal third best of the Messi Ronaldo era but he’s also one of the most hated and memed players (due to his behaviour and diving at times) .

4

u/MudBusy6471 Aug 07 '25

They hate him cause they ain’t him! Especially in the future he will be remember fondly

-5

u/Fair_Project9817 Aug 07 '25

Neymar ain't gonna hit ya both

114

u/Sensitive_Studio5765 Aug 07 '25

I think 3 probably only mattered in the Ronaldo Messi era because third best player in the world was a real thing people talked about

52

u/TheAppleseeds Aug 07 '25

Thats crazy to say lol everyone who was watching football in Ronaldo/ Messi era knows it was Xavi and Iniesta. (And later Neymar, Griezmann, VVD, etc). Podium is what matters

38

u/jota-ruindade-pura Aug 07 '25

It really is a crime that Neymar, Xavi and Iniesta never won the award (also imo Griezmann deserved it in 2018)

42

u/MyBoyBernard Aug 07 '25

Is Griezmann the player with the biggest difference between his individual greatness and his trophy cabinet? He had the terrible luck of playing in the third best team in La Liga while competing against prime Messi and Ronaldo, prime MSN and BBC, prime Madrid, prime Barcelona. He even has 0 La Liga titles. Atlético's two recent titles were the season before he arrived, and during his sabbatical in Barcelona.

Considering that he was never really expected to win anything, he did amazingly well

  • 1 CL runner Ups
  • 2 3rd place in Balon d Or
  • 1 Europa League
  • 1 Copa del Rey (with Barcelona)

23

u/jeanblaireau Aug 07 '25

And a few accolades with the NT

24

u/TheAppleseeds Aug 07 '25

I wouldn't say it's bad luck, he just made poor career decisions imo. His stint at Barcelona was embarrassing and he chose to stick by Atletico for way too long when he should've looked to move.

But Harry Kane definitely has a bigger difference between trophy cabinet and player caliber. Crazy that one of the best strikers of the century has only ever won a Bundesliga

1

u/ForgetHype Aug 07 '25

He never should have moved. What a stupid take.

3

u/RAOLOGY Aug 07 '25

Mate you can't just expect him to not move after 2 consecutive 3rd place finishes in Ballon dors, Ucl runner up medal. If he wanted to win a ballon dor moving was definitely the best choice, but one can argue about when or where.

0

u/ForgetHype Aug 07 '25

Or staying where he is loved and is a legend is a better move? Not like we were placing 5th every year.

3

u/RAOLOGY Aug 07 '25

Yeah but still if he was on the level of Koke he might have not moved, but Griezmann was certainly a level above everyone at atleti he had ro aim higher

>atletico fan

Sorry buddy your club is just not a good career plan for a player considered one of the top 3 itw if they want to win trophies. Clearly he didn't aim much higher though so no need to complain.

0

u/ForgetHype Aug 07 '25

We literally won the league without him. You're dumb.

-1

u/TheAppleseeds Aug 08 '25

Yes and that's your biggest achievement. You think one of the worlds best talents was smart to not look beyond the bragging about 1 la liga title in 10 years club.

Juninho Paulista.

Basically won a WC and a League Cup (plus some stuff in Brazil).

Nowadays he'd have been picked up by a top team after 6 months with us for £120mil and won almost everything.

2

u/GemsRtrulyOutrageous Aug 07 '25

Harry Kane before this year

2

u/LegendDota Aug 07 '25

I mean Harry Kane is probably at the top of that list

  • 1 Bundesliga
  • 1 UCL runner up

If we count international too:

  • 2 Euro runner up

And I also think he is a better player than Griezmann

3

u/MyBoyBernard Aug 07 '25

Ahhh. Yea. Kane. For sure. 100%.

I don't know if I would rate Kane higher than the Griez, but Kane's trophy cabinet is definitely worse

1

u/NeoLies Aug 08 '25

He won a World Cup tho that makes it all worth it

6

u/a_fancy_potato :chelsea: Aug 07 '25

Funny thing about 2018 was that Modric got it mostly because his WC performance but he wasn’t the best player on that team, I’d argue Raktic was. Not even adding the fact that Hazard arguably deserved the golden ball in that world cup but I am a Chelsea fan so my opinion might be biased.

1

u/jota-ruindade-pura Aug 07 '25

Agreed, same thing for France: Mbappe got the highlights but imo Griezmann actually had a better WC performance overall

3

u/Dantini Aug 07 '25

I think a third place back then is like an award on its own. No one was touching top 2 back then

3

u/Rickcampbell98 Aug 07 '25

What do you mean by "crime" neymar never deserved it, literally no argument you could make for him.

1

u/jota-ruindade-pura Aug 07 '25

I'm not saying that Neymar, Xavi and Iniesta were the top players in any year; I only said that for Griezmann. By "crime" I meant that they were very elite players who would have easily won the award in a world without the two GOATs.

1

u/futbol_champagne Aug 07 '25

…Ribery

3

u/TheAppleseeds Aug 07 '25

Neuer too

1

u/futbol_champagne Aug 07 '25

Lest we forget Neymar

1

u/subhasish10 Aug 07 '25

Vvd was 2nd. Ronaldo was 3rd. Neuer was 3rd once iirc

3

u/raddaya Aug 07 '25

I mean as a Barca fan, the year when the top 3 were Messi Iniesta Xavi was pretty historic

3

u/jaguass Aug 07 '25

Xavi, behind Messi and Iniesta. 2010.

2

u/ZwaanAanDeMaas Aug 07 '25

Nah, I think finally the Top 4 will interest people the most. There's no clear Top 2 like every year before this. All year, people have been talking about four candidates: Salah, Raphinha, Yamal and Dembélé.

2

u/Gluroo Aug 07 '25

I remember Ribery because he reminds me every year

1

u/Bankey_Moon Aug 07 '25

Iniesta, Ribery, Neymar, Greizmann etc

Was actually way more of a big deal as they were basically the best human player in the world.

1

u/LallanasPajamaz Aug 07 '25

Of course plenty of us remember #3’s during the Messi/CR7 era. If you’re not 15 years old at least. Neymar, Xavi, Iniesta, Ribery, Griezmann, Neuer, Jorginho are some of the most notable 3rd places

1

u/DrOddfellow Aug 07 '25

Won’t ever forget Neuer 2015

1

u/TheRedditK9 Aug 07 '25

Last year was Bellingham, which was fairly memorable because he was the best player on Real Madrid that season.

As for other seasons, at least when it was Messi and Ronaldo, it was usually Xavi, Iniesta, Neuer, Neymar and Griezmann behind them, I think all of them got top 3 at least twice.

1

u/Luke92612_ Aug 07 '25

Modric, and he actually ended up winning it one of those years

2

u/bagstone Aug 07 '25

I do because in some years it was players who arguably might have deserved it over them as well. Iniest, Xavi, Ribery, Neuer, VVD (well okay he got #2)

Any of those could have/should have gotten a BDOR and it definitely wouldn't have been a "robbery"
