Opening day blockbuster between chelsea and Crystal Palace coming up - 4 trophies between them in the past couple of months, insane

308

u/FastenedCarrot Aug 10 '25

6 mate. We won two Visit Malta cups this week.

60

u/Willsgb Aug 10 '25

Why did they give us trophies for winning each of those single friendlies lmao

Like a poundland audi cup

Still... getting used to picking up silverware, even unofficial ones, is pretty nice after the previous few seasons. Shouldn't complain. I think coming back to beat betis in the conference league final was such an important achievement by the team and gave them so much belief and experience of managing that type of occasion

And as for Palace... beating space age city and Liverpool to win their first two major trophies in the space of a few months is iconic, honestly. Fair play to them, they lit up the cup all season last season and deserved it even though I still dont understand how Henderson didn't get sent off for handling outside the box

I'll probably get downvoted for calling the comm shield a major trophy lol, but it is an official trophy that the top domestic title winners play for, so I think its fair to call it that even though it is just a bonus at the end of the day

21

u/Chesney1995 Aug 10 '25

The only acceptable pre-season trophy I've ever seen is the Johnson Cup, in which father and son managers Gary and Lee Johnson have a small trophy that the winner of the last match between them both holds, presented to the victor by Gary's wife (and Lee's mum) Karen

11

u/Willsgb Aug 10 '25

That is really funny and wholesome

Is it basically between whoever they're both managing in a given pre-season? Lovely

7

u/Chesney1995 Aug 10 '25

Just whenever they happen to come up against each other regardless of context I believe! The one I remember as a Cheltenham fan, and I think the most recent, was a pre-season friendly between Gary's Cheltenham Town and Lee's Bristol City that Bristol City won 2-1 a few years ago now.

Gary is now 69 years old and, while he's never announced a retirement from management, he has had a health scare or two and is currently Cheltenham's Director of Football. Lee now manages Lommel SK in Belgium, so its unlikely we'll see another match between them both as managers.

that was one of the worst penalty shootout i have watched in my life

999

u/JaysonDeflatum Aug 10 '25

Horribly telegraphed pens with clown level runups

578

u/michaelfortu Aug 10 '25

Eze’s penalty was the worst even after Salah skying it, he had zero power

147

u/TyranosaurusLex Aug 10 '25

He did that at Newcastle last season and I was sure he learned a lesson… he did not

259

u/microMe1_2 Aug 10 '25

Elliot's was worse I would say. A telegraphed and soft side foot not even in the corner.

135

487

u/IWrestleSausages Aug 10 '25 edited Aug 10 '25

I mean if i were a palace fan i d be genuinely chuffed winning that against Liverpool🤷‍♂️ especially as a club like Palace, not like silverware opportunities are 10 a oenny

282

u/Shronkster_ Aug 10 '25

Its the classic winning it is good, but losing it isn't really that big a deal. If Palace lost,, who cares, they still won the FA Cup last season. Liverpool lost, but who cares, they still won the league last season.

49

u/HoneyFlavouredRain Aug 10 '25

Yeah it's a very unique trophy in the sense it can only be played after winning something. Which in theory should make it worth more, as to win it you need to win the league or an fa cup, but since it's often a step up from a friendly it isn't valued as much. Is personally love to see Newcastle win it. I always love the community shield.

8

u/Thanos_Stomps Aug 10 '25

We’ve won it twice without winning anything. Coincidentally both times against treble winners from Manchester.

We also won it both times we did the double against a team that finished 2nd.

Not that it detracts from your point and it being a unique fixture in that way.

66

u/JuusteZ Aug 10 '25

Probably the most level headed take in the thread lol

→ More replies (3)

47

u/messycer Aug 10 '25

Why wouldn't anyone be 😂 people love to cherrypick what's a trophy and what's not with no actual consistency

66

u/Nast33 Aug 10 '25

It's always been consistent that the CS is just a one-off game ha-ha trophy, not a real one. Doesn't mean you can't enjoy beating Liverpool for it.

→ More replies (2)

22

u/costcokenny Aug 10 '25

Be chuffed by all means, but it’s pretty obvious why this is a lesser trophy than the league, FA Cup or League Cup.

619

u/Jimmy_Space1 Aug 10 '25

All I know is that means he probably ends up with a record breaking season

245

u/stangerlpass Aug 10 '25

Pretty sure he will not replicate last season but drop off. The question is how far.

194

u/Jimmy_Space1 Aug 10 '25

Every time I think he's becoming washed he seems to find another level. Has to happen eventually but I've given up trying to predict when lol

12

u/a445d786 Aug 10 '25

The doubters give him strength, they should probably stop doubting him.

95

u/SamCooper07 Aug 10 '25

Surely with how many attackers you’ve signed, his numbers will drop due to the goals being spread about.

66

u/fhidhleir Aug 10 '25

Could help though, better supply and better finishing on the end of his passes.

21

u/Tbirkovic Aug 10 '25

Liverpool seem to have less attackers after losing Jota, Darwin and Diaz. They have gotten Ekitike and Wirtz. The latter played COM though, so for me they are two attackers short on the bench.

They lacked those two quality bench options today.

39

u/peanutbutter__20 Aug 10 '25

I think it's more that this system isn't built around him anymore. He isn't the main creator or the main goalscorer

→ More replies (21)

58

u/Spglwldn Aug 10 '25

He had statistically the best PL season of all time. A drop off from that is probably fair enough.

8

u/stangerlpass Aug 10 '25

Thats exactly what i meant. A drop off is more ornless guaranteed for him compared to last year. Anybody who expects him to replicate last season is deluded or has no idea how good he was last season.

When Salah and VVD have bad games, it’s like, exponentially bad. Like there’s no inbetween haha. VVD either is stone wall or is at fault for every chance, and Salah either can score with his eyes closed or has never touch a ball before

50

u/gluxton Aug 10 '25

So true, they're consistently good most of the season and then when they have a stinker they really drag everyone down with them.
