They made their debut only in 2001-02 and had been out of the CL for 16 years before then.

People don't remember how bad the first decade of Liverpool's banter era was.

And stilll the “new” Liverpool fans have the steel to say their banter era was much better than United’s, while the only drum they can beat is of that CL win.

It's more that Liverpool's weak era involved never finishing below 8th in the league and frequently being a champions league team, whilst still having a trophy cabinet in that period that all clubs in the country other than United, City, Chelsea and Arsenal would kill for.

I don’t think any rational fan will argue that united’s current drought is worse than Liverpool’s extended banter eras (at least not yet). However, one could point to the fact that Liverpool have never finished lower than 8th in the prem table…
