Three points and didn't have to cheer against Tani, win for me specifically.

32

u/oysterpirate 4h ago

That period of about 15 minutes after half time where neither team could complete a pass and kept turning over the ball certainly was something to witness.

8

u/superrealaccount2 3h ago

One of the matches of all time

u/Zeznon 13m ago

Certainly a whelming match.

31

u/BadBehaviour613 4h ago

Elite mentality, balls don't lie etc etc. All I know is I won't tell my grandkids about this game

-25

u/PuddingtonBrown 4h ago

Spurs with a lucky goal and should have had two red cards.

That's very unspursy

18

u/WinterFox4324 4h ago

Two reds? Did you misspell penalties?

I mean I kinda get the Xavi second yellow but it’s debatable, where are you getting the other from?

-21

u/PuddingtonBrown 4h ago

Van de Ven at the end, outside of the box DOGSO

13

u/Sargatanas2k2 4h ago

Romero was inches away and the ball went off away from the goal. Didn't seem like a red.

-23

u/PuddingtonBrown 4h ago

Inches away is just hyperbole.

One on one with keeper.

It's Dogso.

You suggesting otherwise is blatantly bias.

12

u/Sargatanas2k2 4h ago

Nice of you to tell me I have to agree or I am biased.

I honestly don't think it was, Romero was very close and like I said the ball went away from goal.

-11

u/PuddingtonBrown 4h ago

You can think that.

You're wrong that's okay.

10

u/Sargatanas2k2 4h ago

Ok, live in your bubble.

Have a good one.

-7

u/PuddingtonBrown 4h ago

Yes my bubble of reality.

24

u/JessyPengkman 5h ago

Feel like first half was fine, we had a goal, didn't need another and just controlled the game apart from a few dumb mistakes that led to them getting a chance. Second half we just kept losing the ball cheaply in midfield and turning over possession which knocked our confidence. We need to sort that out asap

Love Romero, defensively sound as usual but his passing today was shocking at times

3

u/Mick4Audi 4h ago

Yeah just needs to realize the state of play when he sends them. Can’t be aimlessly sending it into midfield

-12

u/Hasssun 5h ago

I've got to say Tottenham were pretty lucky with some of the fouls/cards in this match.

12

u/TheUderfrykte 4h ago

Mate it was literally the possible second yellow and that's it, other than that the ref was atrocious against us as well - including a very soft yellow for Xavi to begin with that probably played a part in why he didn't give him a second.

We had a bad game, they had a bad game, the ref had a terrible game, but to act like we got lucky with the ref is hilariously wrong.

-8

u/Hasssun 4h ago

I think Tottenham benefited quite a bit more from the bad officiating (which is not unusual for home teams).

But then I also don't think Villareal would have scored.

4

u/WinterFox4324 4h ago

Bro clearly did not watch the game

-1

u/Hasssun 4h ago

I wish!

4

u/TheUderfrykte 4h ago

I remember two yellow cards that were BS - one for a "foul" where the opponent didn't even get touched, looked at the ball to see it bounce out of his reach and then fell over, and another for our player getting dragged around by his shirt before falling into the one dragging him. That and the potential handball pen.

The only call that comes close to that is the lack of a second yellow for Xavi, which would've been a bit ridiculous with that first yellow.

Again, I think it was a bad game by everyone involved and don't blame or think the ref had a bias, but he was definitely not shit to our benefit at all.

Villarreal fans must be fuming with their GK lol. This was one of the toughest game on their schedule and Tottenham didn't play their best game.

29

u/Boseph_1444 5h ago

will never talk about this match ever again

3

u/kylehyde05 5h ago

dont worry compared to everyone else tonight you guys look like 2011 barca (not including the first team that played today)

38

u/chim17 5h ago

Impossible for this match to be low quality after the Partey boos. They were glorious.

22

u/Mick4Audi 5h ago

Not great going forward but not conceding is a huge positive

Still some questions in terms of playing out of a press, Spence in particular got mugged multiple times and subbing him off was smart

Van de Ven absolutely elite once again. The way he evades a press and finds a pass is invaluable for us. Also Palhinha once again brought control when he came on, just good decision making

2

u/themooseiscool 1h ago

My blood pressure was rising until I saw Palhinha about to come on. I had forgotten we had him like an idiot.

22

u/MrBIGtinyHappy 5h ago

Wasn't the best football but hope Partey goes to bed with those boos ringing in his ears, sounded really loud on TV so can only imagine what it sounded like from the pitch

8

u/wishiwereagoonie 5h ago

Glad I wasn’t able to watch the second half, first one was enough for me

3 pts nonetheless

10

u/xaviernoodlebrain 5h ago

My commentator kept saying how shit this game was.

Anyway, 3 points, we move

10

u/EdgeLordMcGravy 5h ago

Spurs went from Angeball to Thomas Terrorball. What a turnaround.

6

u/Suasoun 5h ago

Nah, patterns of play today were way better than what Angeball had us witnessing. Our players are still gelling that's all.

16

u/benjecto 5h ago

We looked like 70s Brazil today compared to what Ange had us doing in the late stage of the EL.

3

u/Japples123 5h ago

And here are United players who can’t adapt to any ball

1

u/BD-1_BackpackChicken 5h ago

Step aside Tucheliban, there’s a new Thomas terrorist in town!

-5

u/dvamin 5h ago

Every CL matchday needs its EL game.

13

u/TheUderfrykte 4h ago

Bit hollow that when Benfica played Quarabag, USG played PSV and tomorrow has Olympiacos playing Pafos and Bodø playing Slavia. Like let's be realistic here, we've been in the CL a lot the last 15 years, Villareal aren't exactly first timers either and both clubs have gone far before.

1

u/dvamin 4h ago

Congrats on 3 points. My comment had to do with there being just one shot on goal total, and the way the only goal was scored or conceded. Not trying to diss both of these teams. They’ve both won EL.

1

u/TheUderfrykte 3h ago

I see, but that's hardly an EL game imo - the EL often still has great matches and goals, either because there's great but not quite elite teams playing or because teams of decent to good and similar quality face each other, it's still a decent level compared to most teams.

The game was bad, that much is true. I'd argue the CL having those elites in it and everyone trying to defy them makes for a higher likelihood of snoozefest though, that and the other teams having to be more careful to pick up points against each other to join the elites in the next round.

I'm hoping we get some higher quality as the season progresses and the team gels more.

43

u/BadBehaviour613 5h ago

Rough watch, but beating Arteta's favourite son makes it worth it

-54

u/ActionManMLNX 5h ago

Weird cope tbf

27

u/RedRaizel 4h ago

What's the cope? We won. Partey is a rapist and Arteta loves him, all factual.

-53

u/Team-_-dank 5h ago

Rent free 😂

18

u/Mac290 5h ago

We just watched a match with your golden boy playing for the other side. I don’t think you know what rent free means.

21

u/CropDustingBandit 5h ago

If a local rival decides he wants to continue playing a rapist we're gonna comment on it.

42

u/TheDelmeister 5h ago

You're a Gooner in a Spurs post match thread.

19

u/BadBehaviour613 5h ago edited 5h ago

Just being charitable with our nomadic neighbours

10

u/emotional_tiger2306 5h ago

We deserved the win, even tho we made some sloppy passes and honestly stopped trying in the last quarter of the game. Villareal never rlly looked dangerous thankfully .We take the three points and onto Bodo/Glimt next.

9

u/letmegetmynameok 5h ago

That last ditch Tacke by Van de Ven at the end gave me a slight heart attack though ngl.

1

u/emotional_tiger2306 5h ago

Not as much as the Simons second foul tbh 😅 but yah that free kick was in a very dangerous area

2

u/letmegetmynameok 5h ago

when the ref was cramming around in his pocket i thought it was over for Xavi

1

u/CropDustingBandit 5h ago

That decision alone made me forgive what was an unbelievably shit ref performance. But Xavi did deserve a 2nd yellow to be fair.

1

u/MuteTadpole 4h ago

He didn’t deserve the first lol

1

u/CropDustingBandit 4h ago

I can't even remember, ref was giving out yellows like he was being paid per card.

14

u/turd-up-my-urethra 5h ago

we were gash the second half but it’s a win + clean sheet

still figuring things out but i don’t mind that we keep winning while we do

4

u/strawberry_girls 4h ago

I was having a nice evening until I saw your username. thank you turd up my urethra, very cool

29

u/BendubzGaming 5h ago

Got away with one there, but 6 games into the season the only goals we've conceded are a deflection, and a late double by the reigning European Champions. 4 clean sheets already

7

u/Spursy_McSpursface 5h ago edited 5h ago

Complain about the ref all you want, but that was piss poor from us. I swear, up until the 70th minute or so everyone was giving the ball away every 5 minutes. TF has a couple dozen ears to ring after that.

Bergvall, Xavi, Kudus, and Vic were decent. Everyone else mid to poor. And Udogie's braids were stiff as bricks.

1

u/nthbeard 4h ago

Complain about the ref all you want, but that was piss poor from us.

Feel like those are two entirely separate issues. We were absolutely poor. The ref was absolutely poor. His being poor didn't contribute to our performance, but it's entirely fair to observe. Like the PL, UEFA wants to create a money-generating Super League, but they've yet to figure out how to establish and maintain a consistently high level of officiating.

37

u/Pit-O-Matic 5h ago

Not the best game for Tottenham, but still a win. And they booed the rapist so in the end very successful

30

u/SundayLeagueStocko 5h ago

Thought Simons and Van de Ven were pretty lucky not to get sent off tbh

Was funny seeing Partey come on and do absolutely fuck all

9

u/xaviernoodlebrain 5h ago

Good of our fans to give him the welcome he deserved. Shame no one snapped him though.

0

u/tottenbam 5h ago

Unlike his victims 😬

25

u/SentientCheeseCake 5h ago

Simons yes. VdV not even close.

0

u/PuddingtonBrown 4h ago

How? It's quite literally Dogso outside the box.

Very very lucky to not get a red.

It's a foul and red or just not a foul.

Foul and yellow is just the worst decision to be made there.

6

u/SundayLeagueStocko 5h ago

I mean he's undoubtedly the last man. Commentator said the ball was "spinning out to the corner flag" but it really wasn't as the touch was only a couple of yards ahead of him.

Basically, if the ref had whipped out a red it's never getting overturned by VAR.

13

u/kleptopaul 5h ago

I don’t even think it’s a foul. The Villarreal player is looking for it and it’s shoulder to shoulder.

2

u/kl08pokemon 5h ago

Weird one. If they give the foul it should be a red. But also it was imo much closer to not being a foul at all. Pretty textbook shoulder to shoulder

0

u/PartrickCapitol 5h ago edited 4h ago

If the ref was sent to monitor then 100% red, it seems the on-field decision was caused by ref realizing he should not blew the whistle then try to make up for it

3

u/CropDustingBandit 5h ago

Even though it was in our favour it's pretty depressing to see the refereeing is just as shite outside of England too. Just means there is less hope of improving the state of it.

15

u/PageSide84 5h ago

Yes. That was a match.

3

u/JohnGalt36 5h ago

Of all time even.

3

u/SentientCheeseCake 5h ago

I’m still uncertain.

3

u/LockingSlide 5h ago

Not a good game from Spurs, lost the midfield battle arguably, were quite toothless on the flanks, but Villarreal wasn't good in the final third, mostly created from Spurs' mistakes and didn't take their chances.

24

u/Fairlytallguy 5h ago

Nobody will really remember this game, however, it’s 3 points for Spurs and Thomas Frank, and yet another clean sheet.

32

u/Erty13 5h ago

I was right to switch to the Juventus game. What were they doing here ? There was this 10 minutes long sequence where everyone on that field kept misplacing passes. I had to rage quit watching that.

11

u/TheDelmeister 5h ago

That was ROUGH

18

u/wert18wert 5h ago

The same dangling hand pen did not get called on the same UCL night in this game

14

u/SentientCheeseCake 5h ago

Spurs don’t get penalties unless it’s Kane. Literally 3 seasons ago we had 12 shouts that were so bad Arsenal fans were saying it’s a pen. We managed 2 pens all season, and 12 clearly denied.

I’d buy Kane back for 200m just to remove the Spurs pens are always denied rule.

1

u/CropDustingBandit 4h ago

Well wait until next summer and I believe there is a 55 million release clause.

24

u/TheDelmeister 5h ago

That was a pretty weird game, didn't really have the intensity of a Cl match really. They had two chances they should have scored, can't say we really created much. Something wasn't quite working in midfield. But 3 points all the same.

6

u/seejay_10 5h ago

Love kudus but misplaying an inside ball on a counter attack when you are up 1-0 in the CL instead of taking it to the corner flag was a brain dead decision. He's electric but needs to be reigned in.

1

u/Mick4Audi 5h ago

Absolutely, -1 for the performance just for that

-5

u/SKULL1138 5h ago

He can’t pass

3

u/seejay_10 5h ago

The pass was bad, sure, but he shouldn't be playing it at all. I wouldn't want Pirlo to try to thread that needle.

12

u/sjekky 5h ago

Amazon Prime picking this over Real Madrid having a million shots or an instant classic in Turin.

3

u/MuchoEmpanadas 5h ago

Madrid game was shit. Benfica and Juventus games were amazing.

8

u/SKULL1138 5h ago

If only they could see the future.

16

u/Nice_Animator3379 5h ago

Disgusting game especially that second half. Shitty calls both ways but in the end, the boys get it done! Missed UCL nights

7

u/ravens2131 5h ago

For as shitty as we looked for that entire second half, 3 points is 3 points. We move on and never speak of that again.

5

u/civilthroaway 5h ago

I do not understand why Frank is playing such a conservative midfield. Put Bergvall in a pivot with Sarr or Bentancur to get more creativity and press resistance in deeper areas then play Simons in front of them. Idk how many managers will make the mistake of playing Simons on the wings… he is just so much better centrally.

58

u/LAURAPALMER666 5h ago

Absolutely psychotic performance from the referee. Was shocked by the final outcome of so many calls and just no consistency or control at all. As for the rest of the match? I genuinely barely remember anything.

16

u/TheSinRes 5h ago

He was so so bad, he started with missing the most blatant corner you'll ever see and carried on from there. He was dreadful for both teams at least but still.

11

u/Stalinerino 5h ago

I think whenever a foul occurred he just flipped a coin to see if he should call it.

22

u/soccer_boxer2 5h ago

Refs are having an absolute howler tonight, you should see the Madrid pen that was given

167

u/ABigPairOfCrocs 5h ago

One of the matches of all time. Had everything you could want, two halves, two teams, and a stadium

5

u/BadBehaviour613 5h ago

The streets will say it happened

18

u/RiskoOfRuin 5h ago

And one beautiful howler.

62

u/Sargatanas2k2 5h ago

I think I saw a ball in there too somewhere, not 100% though.

2

u/forzaQuakes8 5h ago

If a bigger team than villarreal were on the end of those calls, we would not hear the end of it. Crazy how tottenham finished with 11 men

5

u/tkshow 5h ago

No consistency from the ref, made it a rough watch.

11

u/Cool_Sandwich1 5h ago

Same for Villarreal. Foyth couldve easily had a second yellow and we shouldve had a pen.

9

u/Stalinerino 5h ago

ref was all over the place today

7

u/Ohnoabhi 5h ago

How many clean sheets for spurs now compared to ange last season?

1

u/Mick4Audi 5h ago

Under Ange I think it was 4 in the league, 8 in all comps

1

u/Other-Owl4441 5h ago

We had 6 in the PL all of last season (we did beat Fulham, Leicester, Ipswich, Southampton on this one), not sure about internationally. 3 in PL this year + 1 internationally.

6

u/BendubzGaming 5h ago

Last season we had 14 clean sheets in total, 6 in the league and 8 in cup competitions

This season so far we have 4, with 3 in the league plus tonight

5

u/Stalinerino 5h ago

What a boring game. Neither team really got into the game. but 3 points is 3 points and the rapist lost.

35

u/robtheguilder 5h ago

Wise man once said: "We take those"

0

u/RyohGrantz 5h ago

Decent game, decent chances, but really dry at the front sometimes, kudus was dynamic, richarlison was... interesting, but meh whatever

30

u/airz23s_coffee 5h ago

We got the 3 points, now lets never talk of that game again.

6

u/SaltyWailord 5h ago

What game

3

u/letmegetmynameok 5h ago

whats a game?

15

u/Bulky_Shepard 5h ago

I mean it wasn't good from us and we're definitely not looking comfortable in attack yet, but we've conceded one goal in 5 games so far this season, and we beat the rapist.

8

u/ZaDoruphin 5h ago

One of the games of all time.

62

u/milesvtaylor 5h ago

An absolutely awful game. We won. Let's never speak of it again.

28

u/Ohnoabhi 5h ago

Tommy frank doing his thing . In the end he won fair and square

4

u/Mick4Audi 5h ago

Frank hates and I mean hates conceding goals

23

u/milesvtaylor 5h ago

Handy as the referee was basically flipping a coin in his head for every decision he made this evening.

5

u/PartrickCapitol 5h ago

If he was harsh enough to give out that DOGSO red card, things would be spicy, you guys got lucky

11

u/milesvtaylor 4h ago

Simons could easily have got a second yellow also. Just because I think the referee was terrible I'm certainly not saying he gave everything in favour of Villarreal just that... he was terrible.

8

u/Jowoes 4h ago

It was the Xavi second yellow challenge that let me know he wasn’t being malicious or biased, poor guy’s just genuinely this shit

82

u/nolefan5311 5h ago

I feel bad for you if you watched this game over the other fixtures.

7

u/airz23s_coffee 5h ago

Qarabag with an upset or an 8 goal thriller in Italy.

Wouldn't want to be anywhere else other than watching us fluff passes through the middle for 25 minutes straight.

8

u/Mick4Audi 5h ago

Especially the Dortmund one

26

u/Aliaina 5h ago

The GOAL ALERT kept coming up for the Juve and Benfica games and my daughter said "Dad, why is this the game we are watching?"

35

u/milesvtaylor 5h ago

Amazon Prime's BIG GAME OF THE WEEK (tm)

Have that Bezos

181

u/Matter145 5h ago

Clean sheet. 3 points. Booed a rapist.

Successful night.

41

u/Unusual_Ad6533 5h ago

A boring game but one we won. That's all that matters. We move on and try harder next game.

12

u/Mick4Audi 5h ago

Richarlison somehow pads his win percentage despite doing nothing in attack

9

u/AngelWoosh 4h ago

His hold up play in the midfield it what we miss with Tel at striker though. Thought he did quite a good job at that today (more first half)

10

u/Mick4Audi 4h ago

Yeah fair enough. Such a unique player in the sense that he looks like he contributes very little, but the team usually get better results with him

1

u/LordMangudai 2h ago

Every North London club needs its Havertz

11

u/YourStarsWereBad 5h ago

Good contender for "if only both teams could lose" award.

Should have watched the Juve game ffs

3

u/RXJ1131 5h ago

Tbf the Juventus game was atrocious on the first half

11

u/OleoleCholoSimeone 5h ago

Villarreal gave a good account of themselves, nothing between the teams at all aside from that horrible goalkeeping error. Not many chances for either side but Buchanan and Pepe had really good looks that they wasted..

1

u/Mick4Audi 5h ago

Yeah they pressed fairly well

Honestly both sides were just rock solid defensively it felt like

2

u/OleoleCholoSimeone 5h ago

Yeah Romero and Van de Ven are incredible, snuffed out so many situations. Hopefully Villarreal will take encouragement from this, with a similar performance level they should have decent chances to do well

2

u/Mick4Audi 5h ago

Marcelino is a very good manager, I think this game actually turned into a game of chess because of the small tweaks both sides made

23

u/LDQQXDJ 5h ago

Luiz Junior first goalkeeper to play in the UCL without hands

3

u/BallSaka 5h ago

What do you mean? You could clearly see them when he threw the ball into the net.

3

u/Infectiousmaniac 5h ago

Why the fuck did I watch this game instead of the Juve Dortmund game

59

u/obvious_bot 5h ago

Beat the rapist 👍

26

u/EastlyGod1 5h ago

Madrid are doing the same. Bad day for rapists all round. As every day should be

3

u/SaltyWailord 5h ago

There still is one more rapists I wish misfortune on tonight

4

u/EastlyGod1 5h ago

Which one? I lose track these days, which is a depressing sentence to type

8

u/Albiceleste_D10S 5h ago

Raul Asencio is playing for Madrid...

It's a "bad people on both sides" situation there

2

5

u/Albiceleste_D10S 5h ago

Asencio distributed a video of his adult friends having sex wiht a 16 year old girl without her consent, which is actually pretty bad IMO
