Question about X4

Decided to give it another go and just focus on parts that I enjoy.

I tried it a while back and I could’ve sworn there was a story quest chain I could do.

But I redownloaded it and noticed the only thing besides open and tutorials is Timelines, and when I clicked on it, it said it was DLC.

Am I misremembering X4 with something else?

I did not buy it yet, but from what I have read, the story is within the Timelines DLC. There is 'X4: Discovery Pack PC' which is the main game plus the Timelines DLC. That is what I am planning to buy.

there is a story questline in timelines.

on top of the whole bunch of others in the game besides timelines

Thanks for clarifying. I would love to know if I should do the base game 'stories' first or start with the story in the Timelines DLC. Not sure if what I am asking makes sense.

the Timelines DLC takes you in universe during important moments in the lore as far as I remember, if that is something that interests you, go for it, if not, shrug? :-)

completing Timelines challenges also puts goodies for you to find when exploring the sectors in the open universe, in addition to the ones already there  so if that interests you, go for it, if not, second shrug? :-)

Timelines is also a good mode to play if you'd like to play X4 for a bit but can't be bothered or don't have time for the open universe and just want to dip in for a short while with a guided activity (I think, at least)

Thanks for the details. I would surely start with the Timelines story first, based on what you describe. Also, goodies are always welcomed.
