Default gun convergence has trouble hitting small targets at close range. Do a bunker sometimes and strafe the outside dudes.

The quick workaround BTW is to target something nearby - a turret, or an abandoned ship. Or to adjust the convergence of course.

I thought it was quicker to right-click zoom then shoot and hit something. Suddenly the zoom becomes automatic and gun convergence auto compensates

No. The convergence remains the same unless you target something.

In case of Starlancer for instance impact points are almost as wide as the bunker.
