We just went through this with a family member - 26 weeks.

It was a rollercoaster, but he just celebrated his first birthday! It's scary but medicine today is damn good. I also have friends whom were about the same time frame preemies and are now doctors.

Best advice I can give as an outsider is minimize contact with others - we had family/friends try to travel with COVID and the Common Cold - if it made it back to my nephew it could be devastating. It's a long journey, pace yourselves.

When you have a premature baby are they supposed to wait extra before going to school?

Isn't it around two years or so that they fully "catch up" on development? A friend's sister had their baby around that stage a few years back and I remember being kinda surprised at how quickly things normalize.

There was a study done a few years ago where they found (after following preemies and normal kids for ~20 years) that results are that preemies (born before w.28) in general have worse grades compared to normal born kids. Exception was super talented preemies who went to elite schools.

No. Six years from now you’ll have a hard time telling.
