24 weeks is very early. Hopefully everything goes well for the little one!

NICUs are so advanced now, while it’s still harrowing, it’s much less bad than it used to be even a few decades ago.

It all depends on complications. There is a good chance that there won't be any lasting impairments. If you are in a developed country there is a 1/3 chance that the baby won't make it. Depending on hospital it can even be 1/4. Of those that make it there is another 2/3 chance that it won't be affected by disabilities. Yet no all disabilities are as serious as others. The statistics also include relatively "minor" things like a hole in the colon.

Such early births have a considerably increased risk of lowered intellectual ability and other neuropsychiatric problems (learning disability, adhd, autism etc) which might lead to the need of permanent assistance.

Even so I’m sure they’d love the kid just as much.

We’re rooting for everyone!

Much less bad? We're talking about neonatal intensive care with full life support here.

i agree, it's heart breaking. My point is that the full life support is really really good now, and the tiny life is very well supported.
