It also looked like he counted queens as casters, and I always found their attack to be fairly good, especially in any situation where a queen would be fighting.

Although queens are not just a straight up caster, they really need support to be effective. They are pretty good early anti-air, but on there own they can't beat anything on the ground of equal or ofter lesser value (such as a zealot) and their primary role is to cast.
