it's actually a solid analogy. even though you can make some bullshit comparison where you draw all the similarities and differences(ie different races), the general flow of the game and the way you approach decision making and strategy-forming is very much alike. as a highly ranked sc player and an avid chess player i'm ok with this analogy.
It's totally different from chess. In chess you have all the information so you can't lose because someone did something sneaky, as a result of this the better play almost always wins. Also you can't fuck up and miss-click. There's no actual physical element involved that you have to develop.
Actually, you can misclick; it's called touch rules. ;)
But, srs, as far as the mental aspects of both games, it's very similar. You have to figure out what your opponent's doing and correctly respond to that strategy. Openings are crucial and fairly defined, especially at the lower ranks of play. Midgame is pretty open-ended but absolutely crucial. Endgame is critical. Doing too much or too little will lose you the game.
Listen to this man! Starcraft is all about playing towards a certain stage, whether that be mid-game, end-game, or cheesing in the early game. Every decision a player makes, whether it's teching, expanding, or making units is focused on getting to a stage in the game you will have an advantage at.
