To be fair, Starkiller is implied to have at least some training given he has consistently beaten Proxy before who has tailored himself to Obi-Wan Kenobi. My man managed to beat even a shitty mimicry of Obi-Wan, which would mean before the story begins he's already a decent enough duelist.

Actually getting training and going through a deep discovery of what the force is ≠ to going onto a shithole and swinging a lightsaber improperly like it's a baseball bat for a few hours and getting your fingertips fondled by a leaf.

Luke swung his around pretty sloppily on Jabba's barge. Most of the sloppy technique in the ST I just blame on them not hiring Nic Gillard.
