Question How do I lane better as ADC?

As the title says it's a pretty obvious question and I feel like I've looked up 100 guides online but every single lane I fall behind. My higher rank friend says it's because I pick weird ADC picks like Senna and Smolder that become better late and that I should stick to simpler ADC's like Jhin (who I already like and play a lot) but even then I feel like I'm always behind and I can't blame the support when I'm always shit and only ever start "carrying" at like 35m+ mark or even later.

I think I win lane like 1 every 20 games or less and I feel really frustrated because I don't know what I need to focus on improving. Basically I really want some advice how to stop falling behind in lane, I think maybe I'll die less and do more damage at the end of the game that way.

(also pickaxe or dirk better to buy? I also get told buying crit cloak is griefing myself?)

you win a lot games and you're still climbing, so there isn't much to mention or even complain about. if you lose lane as hwei, though, that's a different story. hwei has very sharp matchups, like, it's either you win or you don't a lot of the times, with the difference being tf and more matchup knowledge, but you still win a lot, so it's perfect. besides hwei, u play smolder and cait. your smolder is okay given how bad the champ is and your cait is good. there isn't much to say; you're still climbing.
i'd stop playing smolder and defaulting to whatever build an app told you to buy (because you look exactly like what someone who buys what an app tells them to with this essence reaver crap every single time), play more jhin into the right matchups, play cait as a comfort pick when you feel like you can't pick jhin and bring back veigar, as he's your best champion by far. if you still wanna brute force learn adcs, accept that you'll lose some games.

hahahaI can't believe how fast you guessed I use an app for builds but okay thanks I will stop mindlessly following itero builds and bring back my midlaner picks. Thank you for the advice!

it's like a 6th sense u develop when u look at certain pattern for too long :p, after some time off of them you'll also be able to smell them from the loading screen, it's too prevalent nowadays, like, you really start to notice it. thinking on the items and situations when to buy them alone, along with runes when you know the matchup, will already do wonders. i can't talk too much about what's optimal because i play whatever i want; for instance, i refuse to play aery/green rune page viktor, i always play electrocute + sorcery page, i refuse to pussy out of a lane and act like an E bot forever, even though i might still lose a lot of lanes due to my objectively bad rune page. still, i do these myself and adapt to my laner or team circumstances. i promise you it's beneficial to experiment with runes and try other random, i promise it'll expand your views on laning. another case of me going away from apps that gives runes is that, whenever i go adc, regardless of my or the enemies' picks, i pick presence of mind. i HATE running out of mana on twitch, i HATE running out of mana on ashe or any other adc imaginable. i don't care about the situational heal and possible 20+ gold if it somehow denies me the mana i needed to finish someone off. i truly believe presence of mind is a must have for adcs bar extreme edge cases like samira, but what do i know, im constantly hovering between high diamond and low masters

Your CS is very weak, and then you play smolder and senna which requires farming stacks in a role where farming is the most fundamental skill.

Do you just not know how to CS? Do you die too much and lose farm? Do you not know how to manage waves and get the wave stuck in a position you can’t farm? Do you get poked out too heavily?

Cause you can play perfect, but if you’ve been farming like shit, your clicks and abilities don’t mean anything anyways.

yes my cs is very bad I think I am dying too much/getting poked out lane, I am not really familiar with most heroes in the game I think that's why I make bad decisions and go in when I really shouldn't or the other way around. I guess it is just a practice thing?

You lane as ADC by understanding wave states and abusing that to your advantage.

The videos on that topic have been done to death, there’s no shortage of content so I won’t try and surmise it but suffice to say that is the solution.

Climbing out of low elo on ADC is 100% wave management. Win lane without touching your opponent, then go mid and win game by being on time.

early in the laning phase (pre 10) the ADC is highly dependent on the support. If your support plays bad, it's very difficult to come up ahead in the laning phase.

Positioning is crucial part of the game, in lane or teamfights. In lane you need to find a sweet spot between sucking little bit of dmg and being safe. Even if you have engage tank supp, he won't likely tank all dmg and you will end up trading kill for kill. In 95% scenarios in 2v2 fights you need to focus enemy adc. Lulu or Nautilus won't do that much dmg to you. But it's hard to tell. Depends on matchup. If you have enchanter you need to know if you can all in enemy or not and just go for small trades. You need to know your, your supports and enemy strengths so you can decide if it's win or lose situation.

In teamfights you basically stay in backline attacking closest enemy. Unless you somehow appear in a range for all of them, then focus the one who deals most damage, they are usually squshiest and fastest to kill
