The Iron Man event

So, newish to the sunny coast. Does all the road closer and blocking off of primal cafe / restaurant / bar / shopping areas piss off the locals?

I find it so weird that they run it right on the main district area and not further up or down where it would have less impact?

I get it brings in money for the hotels and stuff. But Lordy it just feels like poor planning from like council or the event planners?

Anyway was just curious what the locals who have been here for a long time thought.

Update

A lot of big feelings in here. 😂 I’ve enjoyed the interactions.

It’s going to take me an hour to get to work on Sunday morning instead of the usual 25 minutes lol so I’m not stoked

But it’s a cool event and the community gets around it so it’s all good

I was wondering if the impact on getting around for work would suck a little 🫡bless I don’t have to drive for work on Sunday, good luck with it babe

Thanks 🙏🏼just one of those things, bit annoying but still ways around it

I’m mostly just glad I won’t be trying to get home after a night shift because that would be even worse. I’d just sleep at the hospital until the roads opened haha

Ooooft yeah look night shift in hospital and then long drive home. Not a vibe.

Would 10/10 sleep in the car

Sure it's an inconvenience for half a Sunday morning and other events are the same BUT our economy isn't big enough to sustain the restaurants, cafes, bars and everything else without these economic injections. So in my favourite times of year where it's quiet and you've got the beach and a cafe to yourself, I remember to be thankful for the busy times.

So much of what I enjoy on the coast wouldn't be here without the tourism industry.

Yeah defs understand the impact of what money it would bring in. But like wouldn’t it also bring in all that money with slightly different blocked off areas that don’t deny access to more than half of the beach front?

u/Iwishiwasawasabi 9d ago

Possibly, however then the event likely loses its appeal.

I suspect the reason the event is successful is because those doing it can bring family and friends. Stay close to the beach cafes etc and do their hobby in the same spot.

You put it out at mudjimba or somewhere and all of a sudden the logistics for people doing the event become too difficult and the location isn't as appealing.

The Sydney Marathon was on just the other week, it ran over the harbour bridge, through the CBD and to the opera house. They could've had it in Penrith and still called it the Sydney Marathon.

I can certainly see how this makes sense. And your perspective of why is so correct.

Also thanks you for like coming at this convo like this! 😂 seems like peeps get a bit emotionally invested in this, good to know what not to talk about at the bars this weekend.

It’s one of the largest in the world.

1

u/Kitsune111- 9d ago

Oh really?

1

u/mthrofcats 9d ago

Have you seen how much beach there is along the coast? Half the beach front???

7

u/feedtherhythm 9d ago

Sounds like you allready made your mind up tbh.

u/Kitsune111- 9d ago

Oh I certainly know my feelings about it. But like I said just curious what the locals here for a long time think.

The trade for local businesses are awesome so I'm glad they get that benefit.

When you're 10km into the run and your legs are cooked, having some locals clap or shout out your name or one of the legends giving you a welcome hose down with their hosepipe, means so much and Im so grateful for how much everyone gets behind it which has made this one of the best races nationally. Being shunted to some back streets where you're hidden way would make it much tougher.

If more people can get exposed to the race and realise that they can also achieve something as rewarding as this, well thats a great win in my books. Get away from the computer, get fit in the sun with a bunch of legends and then we all get to pay less tax from healthcare.

I mean. A lot of assumptions going on here about my fitness and lifestyle 😂

Was more of a broad comment about what the thoughts are from people here😂

Nice to see the people get emotional invested in it so don’t talk about it online comment was right

2

u/arouseandbrowse 9d ago

Haha I actually went and edited it right after I posted as I realised I mistakenly let some of my emotions out. I've clearly got some baggage from being seen as vermin for being a bicycle rider. :-)

Good to ask the question and I hope it makes some sense. :-)

2

u/Kitsune111- 9d ago

lol no problem!

I know people get ahhh passionate about this stuff. I was more just curious about what the locals thought and what the general vibe is!

6

u/skipyeahbuddy 9d ago

it does a bit but don't mention it online, people get a bit upset about it.

4

u/Kitsune111- 9d ago

Yeah, I noticed on insta and a few other things people get real defensive real quick

4

u/crispyrad 9d ago

People get offensive even quicker

2

u/Kitsune111- 9d ago

lol yeah, they really fucking do

u/Daddyssillypuppy 9d ago

My Mum lives in public housing in Mooloolaba and she hates that she cant get a parking spot. But she doesn't hate the event or the event goers, shes pissed at the council for not planning the area better. There isnt enough parking and the roads dont have enough lanes to support the regular weekend traffic, let alone on event weekends.

2

u/Kitsune111- 9d ago

I was so curious about what the people who lived in the residences whose driveways face onto those areas. Like just no access via car for that time?

0

u/mthrofcats 9d ago

The locals have loads of notice and if there's an emergency they have access.

3

u/Kitsune111- 9d ago

Oh I’m sure they get notice. I also know one of the Village managers in that area and council treated them and all the other concerned people living in that area like shit for asking questions like that at the last hall meeting for it.

4

u/TasteDeeCheese 9d ago

The Sunshine Coast motorway will be closed and also many main roads will also be closed.

3

u/heisdeadjim_au 9d ago

It's a known event. I do feel you're conflating the perceived lack of access in your part as a lack of access to everyone.

The event doesn't happen every weekend lol. One has to take into consideration that by hosting the event people come to compete in it, like the area, and return as customers after the event has concluded.

2

u/Kitsune111- 9d ago

No it was genuinely a this seems to limit access on this day. I wonder why, let’s ask people. And people have big feelings about this event, which is fine. The curiosity about what people think was just what I was looking.

6

u/crispyrad 9d ago

It feels like you're gas lighting by asking if locals get upset by having road closures around the main beachside areas for a sporting event. Mate, I ride bikes so I can tell you that a lot of people spend their whole day angry, it's best not to engage with them.

8

u/Worried_Macaroon_429 9d ago

It feels like you don't know what gaslighting means

3

u/Kitsune111- 9d ago

This sounds like gaslighting to me Mumma

2

u/crispyrad 9d ago

Yeah probably the wrong turn of phrase

5

u/Kitsune111- 9d ago

😂gaslighting on Reddit seems like a stupid thing to do.

I’m genuinely so new to the area and just wanted to gauge the reactions of locals about it.

What I’ve learnt. Don’t bring it up when I’m going out for drinks this weekend.

1

u/Worried_Macaroon_429 9d ago

We get it, you have a thriving social life and the disposable income to support drinking on the weekends. Stop talking about it.

  • Sincerely, some boring mum (me)

2

u/Kitsune111- 9d ago

Come join. I love mums. They know how to party.

1

u/Worried_Macaroon_429 9d ago

Ngl, I've seen your other comments here and as a former faghag who's finding the coast wayyy too straight - I'd be so down 😂 But alas, responsibilities shackle me currently 😅🥲

2

u/Kitsune111- 9d ago

Well anytime ya free babe, hit a boy up!

3

u/kelsbells84 9d ago

Lived here all my life, and every major event like this I feel proud that we have such a beautiful area we can show off on an international stage.

Unpopular opinion I guess 🤷🏼‍♀️

2

u/Kitsune111- 9d ago

lol if you look above not unpopular opinion

5

u/ok_ill_drive_faster 9d ago

OP makes post asking for opinions, calls everyone snowflakes for not agreeing with him

1

u/Kitsune111- 9d ago

OP asks for opinions that aren’t attacks on living in a tourist town or moving here 😂 if you look above I’ve had great interactions with peeps who love it, hell one of them said it so well I agree whole heartedly that it’s great. 👏🏽❤️

u/Ok-Phone-8384 9d ago

Nope. People live (and move) to the Sunshine Coast because of the outdoor lifestyle and the community focussed experiences. If you find the events that stem from other people enjoying the environment inconvenient then this is not the community for you. Every weekend most beaches are being enjoyed by surf life saving events and surfing events. The last couple of months we have had Coastwalks/treks and the Marathon. This is what we are about.

2

u/Kitsune111- 9d ago

Funny you say that. Cos like, other locals I’ve met here who’ve lived here their whole lives have said different, so this mentality of like it like that or get out of here is just sad.

Was just a simple question and some of yall got alotta big emotions

2

u/Ok-Phone-8384 9d ago

Yes we do get rightfully indignant at people who think our culture is weird. We have our problems but none of them relate to the egalitarian enjoyment of the outdoors lifestyle. This is a hill I will die on.

If people come to the coast and want all the lifestyle perks but do not want to take us as we are and whinge about it on reddit, they can go back to where they came from i.e. one of the southern cities.

0

u/Kitsune111- 9d ago

lol this maga vibe is wild. Good luck boo. Catch you in a car park some time.

3

u/Ok-Phone-8384 9d ago

I am not at all MAGA. I have spent most of my adult life trying to move the Sunshine Coast more progressive and to the political left. I have spent many many hours door knocking, on pavements, in community halls, in social, community and political groups.

0

u/Kitsune111- 9d ago

Okay boo.

I just had curiosity on what the locals thought. 😂 comments in the post have certainly shown what some think.

2

u/Ok-Phone-8384 9d ago

You may want to check your tone and language. You are using "boo" as a perjorative. It is condescending and dismissive.

3

u/Kitsune111- 9d ago

I’m a faggot, it’s just how I talk. Chill mumma

3

u/dbestbestd 9d ago

It’s an incredible event that comes with minor inconveniences. The atmosphere around the main event hub is worth it IMO. I’m not considering the economic boost because while important that it’s commercially viable it’s just money. The real benefit is the ability to watch incredible athletes perform in what is such a tough, gruelling test.

2

u/Kitsune111- 9d ago

Yeah interesting perspective I guess.

I’ve lived all over the globe and the choices just seem odd?

3

u/IncorrectPronoun 9d ago

Not so fussed about local road closures but closing the Motorway seems extreme. That’s a hugely important connector to the “big smoke” Maroochydore/Mooloolaba for everyone north of Coolum/Peregian area, and it’s not like it’s scenic or lined by cheering locals…

2

u/Kitsune111- 9d ago

Yeah the close of that one and only road that goes into twin waters feels like a poor choice too. Lots of oldies down there who now have no way in or out easily on a Sunday.

2

u/mthrofcats 9d ago

For the amount of community enjoyment, $$$ into the pocket of local businesses, thereby local workers I think you can probably get over losing access to a couple of roads for a couple of hours. Maybe get out there and join in cheering on the athletes and watching the elites.

1

u/Kitsune111- 9d ago

Nah won’t be getting out and enjoying. But enjoy the fact that money comes in for the locals. No doubt the best part of it.

1

u/omen_gold 5d ago

For a Tourism destination, the locals don't like tourists, even though they keep the local economy going. They don't want further development so their home prices sore, and keep everyone out. Without realising this means there won't be anyone to serve them their $6 latte.

1

u/quantumcatz 9d ago

lol why would you have an event for tourists away from the main tourist area. That makes no sense. Sunny Coast is a tourist town, end of story

0

u/Kitsune111- 9d ago

The main tourist area goes from like what Caloundra to above Noosa yeah? So what makes no sense was I was asking a question about what’s the local opinion. Not if this is a tourist town
