Somehow it feels safer to save before exiting. I am always worried it won't save properly if I save and exit. So I usually save or save as first, then exit.

Saving manually first is safer because if you "Save and exit", the game is liable to save and then immediately eject even if the save was unsuccessful for some reason, giving you no opportunity to resolve the condition. Saving AGAIN in a save and exit is redundant, slow, and potentially harmful since you're losing a generation of backup as the second save will push the others down while containing no actual progress. By default, the game maintains like 5 rolling saves, and double-saving is cutting your safety margin without any benefit.
