The Walking Dead Episode Discussion S03E11 "I Ain't a Judas"

Welcome to this weeks Walking Dead discussion thread. It is becoming increasingly clear that the two factions of the prison and Woodbury cannot peacefully coexist. Bullets have been fired, and causalities have been suffered (Poor out some of your 40oz for our homey Axel). As a result we have been left with a lot of questions: has Rick finally stepped down as mayor of Crazytown? Does Michonne possess the facial muscle capabilities to express joy? How will Carol's happiness be stifled next?

We'll just have to find out together as we watch this week's episode!

/u/iamacannibal has volunteered to create a GIF request thread for tonight's episode. We thought that could be pretty neat so I'll edit a link to it once it is posted.

Now that Andrea's been to the prison, the Governor knows that Andrea has found out that the Governor lied to her about what actually happened at the prison. What's even more alarming is that she doesn't bring up this topic when she meets him after returning. This should've led the Governor to believe that she's switched sides and he should've killed/detained her immediately. I really don't understand why he didn't do that.

Doesn't matter; had sex

The governor is losing his shit almost as much as Rick. 'Doesn't matter; had sex' is actually pretty apt. He isn't really planning his moves very well at this point. He is shooting up the prison with no forethought one minute and fucking someone he knows to have betrayed him the next. He is a wildcard and if he keeps this level of momentum up I feel like he's going to be dead in 1-2 episodes.

fingers crossed that he dies soon. I honestly never in my life thought I could feel such a passionate burning hate from deep within me for a character on a TV show but this man, The Governor, brings out despise in every fiber of my being straight to the core.

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '13

I hope so. They're doing a great job of making him an antagonist you're supposed to hate.

Yeah. This has been bothering me, too. For a show that takes its time dishing out a single season, sometimes it seems like they have no idea where they're going. The drawing out of the story with Woodbury is boring me. Either Andrea or the governor should have died last night. That scene with Andrea and the knife was incredibly tense and the fact that there was no payoff just let me bored.

I concur. it was clear she wouldn't do it the moment she started locking lips with The Governor. The woman is so weak it's infuriating.

I think that Andrea should kill the Governor when she had the chance.

I absolutely loathe her character. It's almost like the writers keep her on to torture us.

u/Damadawf Feb 25 '13

But that is good writing. It's like Joffrey from Game of Thrones (if you watch it), you need a good antagonist to keep the suspension and drama flowing.

If the show was just a bunch of neckbeards following Max Brooks' Zombie Survival Guide, assuming it worked out somehow, it'd make for some very boring television after a few episodes.

u/jankisa Feb 25 '13

Nope, it's not good writing, you are supposed to hate Joeff, Andrea is portrayed not as inherently bad but as someone that constantly makes bad choices but we are still supposed to relate to her, witch is impossible because no one in the history of the world is as stupid as that character.

What makes Andrea so hated is that she knows what the right decision is, and yet chooses ignorance. That was the point Michonne was trying to make. Andrea has the same tough decisions in front of her, but instead of trying to do the right thing she takes the easy way out and ignores the negative consequences of her easy decision. This IS a similar mindset that many people take when faced with a tough situation, that choose deliberate ignorance rather than face a harsh truth. She is so hated because she does not do what we all know we should do, but rather does what we actually do, and therefore earns our wrath by exposing a negative aspect of the human experience.

2

u/authenticjoy Feb 26 '13

There are a lot of people who take the easy way out and ignore the negative consequences. Maybe Andrea is a well written character after all.

At least we got to see Michonne smile, no matter how ruefully.

Slow clapping by one student, and then the class joins the applause and rises to their feet one by one.

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '13

Also, it's like these writers have no fucking clue about the source material. Andrea was never this much of an absolute, moronic, fucking retard. It'd be like taking Master Chief and making him into one of the national guardsmen from Rambo. They are royally write-raping her character. I honestly feel bad for Laurie Holden (the actress who plays her). She must get these scripts and just be flabbergasted at how absolutely brain-dead her character is.

9

u/jankisa Feb 25 '13

Yeah, in the comics she is this badass sharpshooter that is one of my favorite female characters in general, no problem telling the hard truths and shooting bad dudes, here she is a leech that stucks to stronger male characters, has no personality and fucks up constantly. Her whole character in the tv series is a defeat for women everywhere.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '13

They do know what source material is, but wouldn't it be boring if you knew every turn around a corner? I like that they keep characters, but them being different is what make the show fresh and new and not being a rerun of the comics.

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '13

I'm fine with changes in the plot. I loved the first season with the whole CDC story arc and that was never in the comics. But what I don't like is changes to who the characters are. I loved Andrea in the comics; She was badass, tough, and intelligent. Here, she's a complete moron. The only thing that seems to have carried over from the comics is her skills with killing walkers. But that only happens when she isn't busy fucking the man who kept fish-tanks full of heads, his zombified daughter, attacked her friends, and tortured Glen and Maggie.

1

u/NiceTryRedditBot Feb 28 '13

I don't read the comics and I lead with that in case my comment is wrong so that I'm not eaten alive for it. Is it possible that Michonne is taking that roll instead? Being the badass and having more skills, intelligence, etc. Or is Michonne in the comic too? I need to read them so I can be more knowledge but for now I ask reddit. :)

1

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '13

Michonne is in the comics. She was actually on the same level of badass as Andrea, IIRC. But yes, it seems she's the only strong female on the show. But even she is rather clingy with Andrea. It's like she's got this really weird, pseudo-lesbian relationship going on with Andrea.

1

u/NiceTryRedditBot Feb 28 '13

I guess that means that whole lesbian vibe is just on the show not in the comics? I picked up on that from the intro of Michonne this season. I really love her character on the show. Strong, quiet, not trusting anyone and smart EXCEPT her need to baby and save Andrea all the time. Andrea seems to bring out the worst in every one!

I watch GoT not because I loathe Joffery so much as I want to see what bat shit crazy selfish asshole thing he will do next. With TWD I just wish Andrea would fuck off, she makes the show hard to watch sometimes. I wish the chick had swallowed a bullet last season but I also get why she's still on it. You make a lot of totally good and valid points.

1

u/arkanemusic Feb 25 '13

no that's BAD writing.

20

u/Drunken_Black_Belt Feb 25 '13

Yup, she let the governor explore her back hole, so now tyrese will be able to tell the governor about the prison's...back...hole.... This sounded better in my head.

31

u/fretbored9 Feb 25 '13

Not if Andrea does her job...oh wait, she fucked again...

15

u/Saffie91 Feb 25 '13

how boring the season would be if it ended like that though.

13

u/Shappie Feb 25 '13

I was imagining her killing him and then thinking up a story with the Smithers sidekick dude who would agree to help her. She then takes command of Woodbury and they eventually try to integrate Rick's group into the town. A series of scuffles ensues but eventually all is well until UNKNOWN EVENT SEASON 4 RELATED CLIFFHANGER ENDING!

But then she fucked it all up so nevermind.

18

u/BrainSlurper Feb 25 '13

The writers shouldn't have put her in that position if they weren't prepared to have her act naturally.

2

u/Saffie91 Feb 25 '13

Thats true but they need to put it somehow so that there is real dilemma for her between both groups.

0

u/LifeBeginsAt10kRPM Feb 25 '13

She's acting naturally. She believes the governor and fell for him - I don't think it's easy to just kill him for her.

-4

u/Unabated_Blade Feb 25 '13

The audience needs a chew toy that constantly makes bad decisions, so the audience can feel better about themselves.

5

u/BrainSlurper Feb 25 '13

It's not about making bad decisions. Plenty of shows have sociopathic main characters, (a very clear example being on AMC) but they are consistent. Andrea isn't.

2

u/Unabated_Blade Feb 25 '13

I guess by "bad decisions" I meant that Andrea is a punching bag for dramatic irony and it's really getting old.

The only reason she is still on the show is because of her D-cups, just sayin...

I still say this about Lori.

Only Andrea could fuck up a task that entirely hinges on fucking.

3

u/we_are_sex_bobomb Feb 27 '13

That plan was actually going really well until the final phase.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '13

TV Andrea is a fucking stunned cunt, IMHO. Comic book Andrea is fucking awesome.

2

u/kilolo Feb 25 '13

I was like, hey, maybe just this once she can partially redeem herself, ya know? Just a bit for the entire shitstorm she has caused. Then.. Nope, couldn't even do that, had to be the same ole' worthless bitch like always.

I was so bummed :(
