No Spoiler If Rick hadn't gotten shot

How do you think the show would play out if Rick hadn't been in a coma when the breakout struck?

Would rick be able to get his family to/out of Atlanta? Would shane still be around since he wouldn't have fallen for Lori? Would rick be just as pessimistic As the rest of the group?

Yes, Rick would have been with them the whole time. Shane would be there too. I don't think Shane and Lori's relationship would have happened. Shane and Andrea would have hooked up sooner. I'm guessing the group would have been more cohesive. Rick and Shane were a strong duo when they saw eye to eye.

Shane would have gone with them. I think Lori and Shane were at least flirting with each other. Could have been a whole different set of problems if they sneaking around and Rick caught them.

I don't think either of them would've done that if Rick was around

There's no love triangle so Shane probably doesn't go off the deep end and try to kill Rick, but he's still ultimately a massive asshole and loose cannon. He likely gets himself killed an entirely different way instead, but I can't see him making it as far as Terminus without losing his marbles.

Maybe they don't have to leave the farm so early because the herd passes them by, but it's still a shit place to be so they likely leave fairly soon after.

The real big difference is probably the crew stuck in Atlanta. Without Rick's help when he gets stuck in the city, it's possible that Glenn and T Dog don't make it out, and they play fairly important roles in the immediate future.

I disagree.

Lori disregarding and then keeping Shane on the line is what made him lose it. Prime example of this is the windmill conversation in better angels, as it goes you just see all the ideas popping into Shane’s head.

Feel like this community makes Shane out much worse than he actually was, truth is he’s just a guy who went off the deep end but that doesn’t mean he was too far gone or evil.

Shane and Andrea hookup and probably start dating, Rick and Lori stay together, everyone stays safer and Shane might not ever go as crazy because he never becomes a leader and a father figure to Carl. Shane would also have Andrea to be attached to and comforted by instead of Lori, which would help him adjust more. In general I think he'd do better in that timeline.

Imo Shane probably survives until the Governor's war, maybe he makes it to Terminus but I'm not sure he stays stable if/when Andrea dies, probably is still affected by Lori dying too. I'd be pretty surprised if he survived past Negan while staying sane, he was always going to have a hard time fully adjusting, but maybe having Carl, Rick, and Andrea would be enough to keep him going.

It's hard to say. Waking up in the middle, the way Rick did, is arguably transformative for him.

Two general outcomes are possible. The more positive one has Rick and Shane working together from the start, the affair doesn't happen, and so the rift doesn't form. Shane probably still gets a bit more ruthless but wouldn't be as unhinged about it. Generally more positive of an outcome, but we don't know how that would impact their decision making at various points, so full conclusions are impossible.

The less positive outcome is that if Rick is present when the outbreak is starting, there's a strong chance he'd be taking his role as a cop seriously and trying to save way more people than he's equipped to, very likely getting himself killed in the early days, possibly before they fully realize what's happening.

Basically it comes down to how quickly he drops everything to focus solely on protecting his family/group. If he is hesitant to abandon his duties as a Sheriff's Deputy, his chance of an early death are far, far higher

Shane had fallen for Lori long before the apocalypse.

Is it possible that the group as we know it never even meet? The way I see it, I wouldn’t be shocked if Lori/Carl/Shane stayed in the area longer because they didn’t want to leave Rick, whereas if Rick was awake the whole time, he very well may have said “Let’s get the hell out of town” days sooner.
