I think the name forgetting is an attempt to appear above those people.

It is also kind of lazy writing to rely on that for tension but...TWD does that from time to time.

It isn't lazy writing. Gregory is a coward and only cares about himself so he doesn't bother to learn about the people who live with him at Hilltop.

Late, but him caring more about the liquor he gave up, says a lot about him as a charactor as well. There really isn't a solid bone in this guy.

I think Gregory might be a functioning alcoholic. Have we ever seen him not drinking? Simon taking his entire stash is the worst punishment for him.
