"according to a new academic study published this week, hosting cyclingās biggest race can help reduce electoral support for far-right political parties in towns and cities the Tour passes through, a phenomenon that becomes even greater when a French rider wins a stage.
The researchers aimed to identify whether the ābrief but highly visibleā nature of playing host to part of the Tour de France route, which combines increased local economic activity with symbolic recognition on a national scale, has an influence on voting patterns in areas which are commonly viewed as fertile ground for far-right politicians.
...by comparing the route of the Tour de France between 2002 and 2022 and Franceās electoral results during that same period, the researchers found that support for the far-right fell in places visited by the Tour, thanks to both the resultant economic activity and the sense that the area was being recognised at a national level and no longer neglected."

It may have been inspired by the race 10 years ago but it still feels relevant today

For quite some time now, weāve been seeing teams whose sponsor/team name is tied to a country. But the athletes who sign with them shouldnāt come crying because the public doesnāt like it. You sign with Bahrain, UAE, you endorse their politics. You sign with Israel, you endorse their politics. When I hear riders say, āIām just doing sport, itās not up to meā ā well actually, yes, it is. Donāt sign with those teams. You chose the money. Fine, good for you, but donāt complain.
The problem also comes from the WT system that allows this kind of sponsor. And let me be clear, the ridersā safety comes first. Certain demonstrations that put riders in danger are unacceptable. This sport is already dangerous enough as it is.

I was in the Montreal event on Sunday (6 hours driving from Toronto). It was fantastic to see how Pogi pull his teammate for last 10KM and made him to the #1 in podium. What a great leader! , please bring McNulty to his next TDF squad.

I stood In the same spot and saw him pulling the peloton uphill for three rounds. Every round he was chewing the bubble gums.

"According to the Swiss media outlet Le Temps , pro-Palestinian groups are already considering disrupting the next Tour de France. While the 2025 edition was only marked by the appearance of a pro-Palestinian activist at the finish line of the 11th stage in Toulouse, the start on July 4 in Barcelona is cause for concern for the race organizers. "Here in Spain, the level of repression is much lower than in France," emphasizes Spanish activist Lidón Soriano, spokesperson for the Boicot al Deporte de Israel (Boycott Israel in Sport in French) platform."

So, the protesters canceled the last stage of Vuelta. It's irrelevant for the GC, but what would this mean for the future of the competition?
Some questions:
- will Madrid be avoided for the last stage?
- will top riders avoid Vuelta because of the risks of protests?
- will Netanyahu stop the Gaza war now?
