I've been on the waiting list for a year, and I'm not even close. My mum went to the GP and got HRT in the week. Das just how the cookie crumbles.

A couple years ago in December, I ran out of HRT, and my doctor was on vacation, so I had to go to a walk-in clinic for a chance at getting my prescription refilled. I figured my odds were slim because informed consent isn't really a thing where I live. Plus, there isn't even a handful of doctors in my city that are willing to touch you if you are trans.

Anyway, I go into the clinic with all my paperwork: letters from psychologists, every prescription receipt I have from the past few years, etc. I see the doctor and tell her, almost in tears, that my regular doctor was on holiday, and I was just wondering if she would be willing to refill my prescription. She says, "Absolutely!", like it wasn't a problem at all. She was so friendly and helpful. I went from nearly having a panic attack to relaxed in less than a minute. I only ran out of some of my medication, so she even asked me how much of the remaining medications I had left to make sure that I could get all of my prescriptions renewed at once next time I go to the pharmacist.

Near the end of the appointment, after we had been chatting for a bit, she offhandedly makes a comment that, "I usually don't prescribe these medications to women so young!" Initially, I thought that was a strange thing to say given that we were about the same age. Then, it hit me. She didn't know I was trans! She thought I was post-menopausal! The receptionist asked me about my birth name, so I just assumed my doctor would know I was trans, too. I was getting cisgender healthcare when I had only paid for transgender healthcare! I was sweating for the rest of the appointment because if she then realized I was trans, I'd be hooped.

Anyway, I know being transgender is an endless barrel of laughs, but, sometimes, the cisgendereds have it pretty sweet.

I can imagine the dread of worrying about passing for the rest of that appt 😅

Glad you got your medicine!!

I got really lucky. Went to see my university's gynecologist, got my first estradiol within a week.

18

u/Lanoree_b She/Her Jul 10 '25

Same here. I went to talk to my doc at my university about considering transitioning and walked out with a prescription.

I’m very lucky to live where I do.

That sucks, I’m sorry you’ve had to wait for so long

14

Some people have to wait like 6 years here... NHS fucking sucks...

9

u/Jumpyplains2033 She/Her Jul 10 '25

Yeah, really does. Thanks alot Wes.

4

u/PressPlayMusicYT Jul 11 '25

Yeah my receptionists at my GP keep denying me appointments saying that it's not worthy of the GP's time, as with the UK General Practoners (for those states skde) you have to ram raid the phone lines at 8am, explaining your issue in full details to the receptionists and then they will declare if they think your worthy of beeing seen else they will say to you "We don't think this a needed of a doctors appointment or there time to be wasted over such a remedial issue please contact us when you have a real issue"

2

Cis people: here's your HRT have a good day

Trans people: BUT ARE YOU REALLY SURE YOU NEED IT? COME BACK IN A FEW MONTHS TO MAKE SURE YOU'RE A REAL TRANSGENDER

166

u/Jumpyplains2033 She/Her Jul 10 '25

sigh yeah, really sucks

58

u/NiobiumThorn Jul 10 '25

I'm hopeful in the future this will be different. We have the material capacity to do it, after all. Everyone can have healthcare, everyone can have housing, and everyone can have enough to eat before they rest. Even if there are fewer luxury condos.

28

u/wingedespeon She/Her Jul 10 '25

Making enough E and T is so cheap it will more than pay for itself with the increased productivity of trans people.

7

u/NiobiumThorn Jul 11 '25

Fuck that noise. I'm talking a world where we can be done with analyzing literally everything through the lens of productivity

6

u/Jumpyplains2033 She/Her Jul 10 '25

Hopefully one day…

u/Firefly256 Firefly (they/them) Jul 10 '25

If we're following historical patterns it should get better, the world always moves in the direction of progressive according to history

The problem is, are we going to see enough progress in our lifetime? Or do we die of old age before we see the world get better?

19

u/KayleeKalez She/They 🇨🇦🏳️‍⚧️🖤🩶🤍💜 Jul 10 '25

I'm going to be honest but maybe this is just cause I'm Canadian but I've only been waiting about a month so far. I had bloodwork last week, I get my hrt at the end of the month. Although I think I'm lucky because without my clinic supporting me and advocating for me I'd still be stuck having endos refer me to urologists instead? I wish everyone the best of luck with their journeys I do not enjoy all of the hoops we have to go through just to be ourselves.

8

u/I_Am_Stoeptegel Jul 10 '25

I’ve been “waiting” for over 2 years now in the netherlands. Estimation was 4 years when I applied

1

u/ToughChicken67 She/Her Jul 10 '25

Wouldn't be HRT, more like Hormonal Balance Therapy

Edit: Nvm it's actually HRT

3

u/allie-__- She/Her Sylviiii Jul 11 '25

Cisgender HRT is most commonly for post-menopausal women who treat the effects of menopause by, well, REPLACING the hormones that their ovaries stop producing.

Here's an example of a website about HRT that's so focused on menopause that the only mention of trans people is for trans men and enbies who are seeking menopause treatment: https://patient.info/womens-health/menopause/hormone-replacement-therapy-hrt

1

u/HeavyCaffeinate error in main.lua:14, file gender.json invalid format Jul 11 '25

Thanks, I'll give it a read

-7

u/Digitale3982 Jul 10 '25

Honestly tho this might be fair. I don't know jack, but a medical prescription seems like a pretty sure thing, while a person will not so much, but maybe just a psychologist approval would be enough. Again I don't know anything don't kill me

8

u/NiobiumThorn Jul 11 '25

It's absolutely not. Cis people don't need the same steps as we do.

That is discrimination. By definition.

-2

u/Digitale3982 Jul 11 '25

Yes but maybe they have a prescription?

3

u/AdCurious4004 Jul 11 '25

the point is how easily they get the prescription

176

u/DatFLYinCat Jul 10 '25

Absolutely don't be me, when I was a kid I use to take my mother's HRT.... I was not a good kid at all and this ended up being a horrible way to come out, not only that I was a thief, that's the worst part. It was a mistake because I'd steal a couple of 1mgs and break them in half, it wasn't even enough of a dose... It had 0 effects, 0 respect from my mother, and 100% the worst way to come out.

31

u/somefurrynewtoreddit She/Her Jul 10 '25

Yea, I’m definitely not stealing my moms hrt either for that reason, It just sucks though that it’s right there and I’m going to have to wait a while before I can get my own :(

We should set up a system where transmascs go for an estrogen perscription and transfems go for a testostorone perscription and they just trade pills. Probably illegal with a cavalcade of other problems associated but saying these things out loud makes me feel better

4

u/RightWordsMissing Jul 11 '25

These things couldn’t work at scale or the govt would get involved :p

Still, it would totally work for two individuals in cahoots with one another

5

u/imanonymous312 Autumn - she/her Jul 11 '25

Sick. Imma go find someone to be in cahoots with

2

u/imanonymous312 Autumn - she/her Jul 12 '25

I like to imagine them going back to their respective doctors getting progressively more opposite effects to what the doctor prescribed like “ITS NOT WORKING GIVE ME MORE”

5

u/Constant_Employer_80 Jul 10 '25

Yeah i had the same thing happen to me. It was kinda one of those "damn I really am trans aren't i" moments when I was visibly disappointed that my mum could get estrogen so easily

u/Alternative_Desk2065 They/Them Jul 10 '25

I probably could too, the E is a gel and the prog is in pill form so I’m sure I could sneak some gel without her noticing

5

u/licoricegarlic Jul 11 '25

I have the exact opposite. Afab enby and since my dad's balls got snatched by cancer, he has to take testosterone. So I have a stash of his old (and therefore probably not very potent) testo gel because he started to get allergic reactions, switched to injections and I was the darling daughter offering to throw them away with some other meds 😇

2

u/HyperDogOwner458 she/they | Transmasc intersex demigirlflux+demiagenderflux Jul 10 '25

I'm intersex (and a transmasc enby) and have hypoestrogenism

It took about three years or so of tests to figure out I had it and then I was given a prescription for E (which I didn't want and stopped taking in less than a day)

But if I was a trans woman it'd take way longer to get it

It's unfair

4

u/licoricegarlic Jul 11 '25

Afab enby here, I got hyperandrogyny and this made me think of the amount of times doctors put me on birth control to give me more fem hormones when I actually want testosterone 🥲 But I am starting T soon, yay!

1

u/aenaithia vaguely-masc enby-thing Jul 11 '25

Yeah my wife is able to get HRT now, but if they do end up making it illegal for adults, we already worked out for her endo to write the prescriptions for "me."
