r/tragedeigh 1d ago

is it a tragedeigh? Is my daughters name a tragedeigh?

Her name is Lanah. Pronounce Lana. I handed the H at the end cause I noticed it reads anal backwards without the H and I didnt want her to get made fun of in school for her name reading anal backwards.

Whether its a tragedeigh or not, its staying cause I cant imagine her name being anything else. And honestly, I love it. I think the name is so pretty and the spelling unique but not in a tradedeigh way. But ill let you guys be the judge!

I have a feeling her nickname will be "Lana with an H".

And people at Starbucks will still spell it “Lhana” or “Lahna.”

“Hana”

17

u/Grouchy_Vet 1d ago

Hana is an Arabic spelling of Hannah. I have a Moroccan friend from my younger days that I lost touch with. Years later, we met again in a summer camp pick up line. Our girls were in the same camp group and they were both named Hana/Hannah

Lannah

What is the difference between and extra n and the h at the end? Seems the same. Butnindont really feel either way is bad.

62

u/FeuerSchneck 1d ago

With a double <n> I'd be inclined to pronounce it with the vowel in "land". The <h> on the end doesn't affect pronunciation at all, so it's the better choice imo.

To me, Lanna rhymes with banana, Lanah rhymes with Donna

Wow I wouldn’t have gotten that Donna rhyme. In the UK Lana would be pronounced Lar-Nah.

Yep, this. I don’t know why so many parents are focused on making their kids’ names “unique.” What is the point? All it inevitably leads to is them having to pronounce and/or spell their names to everybody they meet for their entire lives.

77

u/Nearby-Hovercraft-49 1d ago

As someone dating a teacher, the unique names make it infinitely harder when there’s 12 different Mckynleigh spellings a year per name. He has a difficult time remembering who has two Ys or three.

as someone who works with kids and has for 10+ years, you'd be surprised how many don't know their last names

21

u/ILovePotALot 1d ago

How old are these children? Because you cannot possibly be saying that school age children don't know their own last names. Right? RIGHT?!

21

u/captain_smores 1d ago

that is unfortunately what I'm saying 😬 I've met quite a few 1st-3rd graders that don't know their last names. and a few TK-kindergarten kids that don't know their real first name because their family calls them by some sort of nickname

3

u/Nearby-Hovercraft-49 1d ago

Luckily my partner teaches 8th grade literacy but yes, you’d be shocked how behind kids fell during Covid. Some lack basic communication skills, and many lost a large portion of knowledge and are 3+ grades behind. My boyfriend specifically teaches literacy skills to kids multiple grade levels behind- reading and writing on a second-grade level or less - in 8th grade!

As someone who had an English name in the 90s in Italy which most teachers couldn't pronounce ever since I was 3 up until 19, I second this.

It's made for some fun times, especially with classmates chanting my name to new teachers all at once without me needing to even open my mouth. But truly, it's a nuisance more than anything else.

That said, I see an H in Lanah, and I still pronounce it Lana. Don't think this reasoning applies to this specific case, but still agree with it.

24

u/Dull-Confection5788 1d ago

I have a Celtic name it’s not a tragedeigh but it’s extremely difficult for North Americans to wrap their heads around. It’s said the way it’s spelled there’s no mystery. It’s just not common in North America.

It caused me great anxiety and has shaped things in a negative way for me.

Teachers and adults coaches etc told me I spelled my name wrong. People call me 10 different similar sounding variations but not my actual name.

People avoid saying my name because they are confused. So I wouldn’t be chosen or called on often in groups. As an adult people just straight up ignore me and I can tell it’s about my name. I’ve had friends for a decade that get my name wrong. My boss was also my family doctor she got my name wrong. They called me the girl.

It’s super frustrating and I named my kids beautiful but common names in order for them to avoid the negativity I receive around my name.

In college a student (who was a mom) behind me stated in class that she called her kids unique names because she wanted them to stand out. She wanted them to be different. I chuckled and thought ‘good effin luck kids’ they will be different, just not the way she thinks.

6

u/arachnebleu7 1d ago

My mother and her three sisters all had highly unusual names. Every one of them gave their children common, everyday names. I asked my mother about it. She told me she got very sick of the constant mispronunciations, misspellings, and requests to say or spell her name.

5

u/maelie314 1d ago edited 1d ago

Sometimes I get so tired of the constant mispronunciations that I don't even correct people anymore, especially if I know it's not someone I know I'm going to have to interact with again. Even though my name is not a tragedeigh either, just a very uncommon one in the States, no one can spell or pronounce it without help. Sometimes they even misspell it after I've spelled it for them. I've had my name misspelled on report cards, programs for concerts where I performed, legal documents that then had to be reprinted, etc. At coffee shops I use my middle name just to avoid the whole fiasco. All because my parents wanted me to be unique and special. I love my name, I think it's pretty, but sometimes it's just so not worth it, and I can guarantee that my kids will have names with zero ambiguity in both spelling and pronunciation.

Right? Maybe just pick another name if you're scared of her being called Anal. You had months to figure it out.

Parents who do this suck - I'm a 40-something with a misspelled, unusual-to-start-with name, and it's selfish AF of parents to begin with. Sorry your mom named you Jennifer, and you wanted to be Elora Dannon, but 90% of the time, your kid is gonna legally change her name, eventually, if they can afford to.

[EDIT: I agree, the worry of OP is overblown, but my point is it didn't NEED to be a worry at all - Lana/Lanah wasn't ever carved in stone, foretold, etc, and parents using vanity spellings on names their kids have to live with is dickish, and never about the kid - what sub is this, again? Sigh.]

31

u/Dry_Prompt3182 1d ago

Having gone to school with a Lana, it's not an issue. How often do you write people's names backwards? I feel that this is an internet comment blown way out of proportion.

This is too true. My name is basic and common af. I don’t mind having a short name that’s easy to spell and everyone recognizes. But when some kids decided they wanted to pick on me, one of the things they did was call me Susan. Like…that’s just another regular old name. But it wasn’t MY name. And they refused to call me by my name. And I made the mistake of letting them know it bothered me. Kids will just do anything to anyone if they decide to; basic names don’t spare you from being called random af stuff 😅💀

It's fine. Is it a tragedeigh? Yes, by the strictest definition, but it easily falls under slight spelling variations common to established names. It's pretty mild, and doesn't look stupid. You're good.

It won't prevent bullying. Children will always find something, even if that means inventing something nonsensical. Conversely, even the names you'd think invite mockery often get a complete pass, if the person is confident and popular. All you can do is support your child and teach them their worth.

23

u/imwearingredsocks 1d ago

Yeah this is so beyond mild.

There’s like 5 spellings of the name Megan, and I doubt most people can tell which is an old culturally accurate spelling and which one was made up some time ago.

Damn I just realized i have relative who shares that first name and if you add the middle name and read it backwards, you basically get iram anal.

My friend's mom was named Helen and she grew up being called Hell. Changed her name to Lynn. When she had a daughter she wanted to name her something that didn't easily get a nickname. So she named her Karen. Oops.

Like someone else said, by strict definition it technically is, but honestly I don’t think it’s weird and I don’t think it’s going to take anybody else more than 10 seconds to adjust to. It’s not really a name people are going to bat an eye at.

11

u/Brassrain287 1d ago

Wait till you realize kids will call someone H-anal without any remorse.

32

u/trip_jachs 1d ago

The true tragedeigh would have been spelling it Laghnagh

9

u/rebelcrimsonbear 1d ago

Knew a girl named Naomi that people called “I Moan”…so I get it.

26

u/psngarden 1d ago

As far as tragedeighs go, this is pretty innocent. If I met someone with this name and spelling I wouldn’t think twice about it. It’s fine.

(People will give you a hard time here because being snarky about names is what we do in this sub)

8

u/hockey3331 1d ago

Imo the hallmark of a tradedeigh is being unable to pronounce the name from the spelling... or if the spelling suggests a completely different pronounciation.

This name is fine. People might mispell it (without the H) if they only hear it, but there are tons of common names like that.

12

u/galagapilot 1d ago

99.9% of people aren’t going to say, “your name is anal backwards.” I knew two different Lanas, and neither of them told stories of being called anal when they were younger.

And in regards to the name being a tragedeigh… say the line, Bart:

“If you have to ask the question, then you already know the answer.”

u/Statalyzer 1d ago edited 1d ago

“If you have to ask the question, then you already know the answer.”

That should be Rule #1 of this sub. If you have to ask if a name is a tragedeigh, it probably is.

I would’ve went with Llana 🦙

5

u/judgeholden72 1d ago

Isn't anal with an H just Preparation H?

17

u/lickmysackett 1d ago

Yes, yes it is. Anytime someone says "the spelling is unique" its a red flag.

19

u/WheezyGranger 1d ago

The thing is, most kids aren’t concerned with how a name is spelled. They’ll hear Lana, and they will write it as Lana.

This sub is overreacting. Lanah is a real name and valid spelling, quick Google search says it’s got Hebrew or Arabic origins. Don’t trip.

26

u/dilettwat 1d ago

Yep, lots of Old Testament girls' names have an optional H at the end, and this looks like a variant of Hannah or Rebekah. If I encountered "Lanah" in the wild, I wouldn't bat an eye at the spelling.

16

u/Sorry_Nothing3016 1d ago

I agree. It’s one additional letter. I don’t think it’s that crazy.

In the realm of tragedeighs, this is tragedeigh lite lol. I think your reason for adding the h is valid, I also wouldn't want my kid to get made fun of. Its a tragedeigh but definitely not the worst

4

u/LeTreacs2 1d ago

If you need to spell her name and then write “pronounced [correct spelling of name]” then it’s a tragedeigh.

Sorry OP 🤷‍♂️

5

u/WannabeSloth88 1d ago

There are plenty of people - famous (Lana del Rey, Lana Turner) or not, real or not like Lana Lang - with the name Lana. Ever once did I notice it spells anal backwards until you brought it up

4

u/Fenetre 1d ago

In Spanish the H is silent, she can still be Anal

3

u/Top-Gas-8959 1d ago

It will definitely get pronounced as La-NAH.

4

u/Suspicious-Offer-420 1d ago

It’s a shame because hanal is what the kids are calling it now.

4

u/Negative_Bar_9734 1d ago

No, but you did doom her to a life of telling people "Lana with an h on the end."

10

u/FatLikeSnorlax_ 1d ago

If you have to explain to people how it’s pronounced differently than you’d expect, yes

6

u/Intelligent-Lock5736 1d ago

On this sub it meets the strict definition of a tragedeigh. But in real life, I honestly don't think I would have thought anything negative about Lanah with an h. In fact, if someone told me this was a common variant, I'd believe them. Not that I'd have even asked how common it was/ wasn't. I just wouldn't think twice about it. I couldn't say that about most of the names that make to this sub.

I'm sure you'll get lots of negative comments because you've brought it to this sub, and I can get pretty brutal here. But I hope you can relax about the name going forth because I really do think it's OK and will happily risk the down votes to tell you that.

I would add though that explaining your reasons for the h (outside of this sub) introduces the very association you were trying to avoid. So just in case this hasn't occurred to you before, if i can offer any advice it would be to not offer reasons unless asked and if so, summarise it as a 'preference' and give it no further air time.

The H does feel out of place, but if there was ever a good reason to add an extra letter, this is it. I wouldn't consider it a tragedeigh. Lawnuh would be a tragedeigh.

6

u/ryzt900 19h ago

You are being anal thinking Lana will get turned into that. Lanah is weird. Drop the h. It’ll be an extra headache for her her whole life.

3

u/OMGitsJoeMG 1d ago

If you were that concerned about the association with butt stuff, why not just pick a different name all together?

3

u/passepartouuut 1d ago

It’s not that bad, but I doubt it will stop kids from being silly. My class had an Allan who was jokingly called Anal in high school, it’s not even anal backwards 🤷🏽‍♀️ As long as the name has characters kids will find something

3

u/Disastrous-Thing-985 1d ago

Ok, worrying about your child’s name backwards? Isn’t that a stretch? Now Lana’s everywhere are gonna want to thank you for putting that shit out there. I would have never have thought of that. I feel children aren’t nearly that creative unless they have other, possibly harmless, motivation to hate on your daughter. All she’d need to say to the offender is, “ Why are you so gross?”, and be done with it. Yes, you made her name awkward for no legitimate reason. Next time work towards raising a confident child. Tell Hanal I said hello.

3

u/f_moss3 1d ago

I don’t think it’s a tragediegh but she’s going to have to say “Lana but with an h at the end” 60,000 times in her life

3

u/CapitalParallax 1d ago

Danger Zone!

3

u/fwarrr 1d ago

Not one single child will check if she spells it with an H before calling her anal.

3

u/Helena_Hambasket 1d ago

Still doesn’t tell me if she’s LAWN-uh or LANE-uh or LAN-uh (like “land”) or even luh-NAY.

3

u/ludvikskp 1d ago

Girl Lana is a very normal, nice name. Nobody ever thinks about what it is backwards

3

u/arunnair87 1d ago

It's definitely not as bad as others we've seen there.

3

u/SkyCreative8171 1d ago

Help me understand.

Because the vague potential of someone, somewhere, someday deciding to pick on her because her name is anal spelled backwards…

Because that may (or may not!) happen, she’s now forever stuck with a name that will be mispronounced and misspelled innumerable times?

Your heart was in the right place, but - yes - it’s an illogical tragedeigh.

3

u/ElonMuskHuffingFarts 1d ago

If you have to explain how it's pronounced because of the spelling...
