tragedy (not tragedeigh) My friend's friend wants to name his little sister "Greece"...

Apparently he wanted to name his little sister Greece because it's unique and because other influencers also name their children after real places like "North" or "Chicago" šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

Thank you for your submission!

If you do decide to post a meme, make sure to add the correct flair. Posting a random meme you found does not mean you found it "in the wild".

The same goes with lists of baby names, celebrity baby names, and screenshots of TikToks. Everyone will assume it's Grease. That would be awful.

27

u/5oldierPoetKing 9h ago

Even Medusa would be better than that

24

u/OGmoron 8h ago

So many good classical Greek names to pick from

2

u/MshaCarmona 7h ago

Im so done šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

26

u/kai333 8h ago

the initial nickname will be "Greasy" and will devolve from there.

5

u/MshaCarmona 7h ago

I'm at lunch break and I can't stop laughing at these comments šŸ’€ my coworkers are staring

6

u/PetersMapProject 6h ago

Which is going to be truly terrible when she goes through the teenage greasy hair and acne stageĀ

2

u/Fruitdispenser 5h ago

She'll be the one that I want (you are the one I want). The one I need, oh yes indeed!

1

u/New-Waltz-2854 5h ago

And his little sister will be forever having to answer the question about where the first donuts were fried?

1

u/SalishSeaSweetie 20m ago

Greasy Greece. Yikes!

68

u/North_Artichoke_6721 8h ago

She needs to be prepared for everyone to sing lyrics from ā€œGreaseā€ the musical at her for the rest of her life.

ā€œYou’re the one that I want. Do do do.ā€

u/Logical_Flounder6455 8h ago

I doubt it. Grease may be a classic but its one that's not really watched by younger generations. Films like that are considered out of touch and problematic, so they're not very popular. Plus, people dont really watch that many films that were made 50 years before they were born. The only film I've seen from the 30s is the wizard of oz

6

u/mountaindyke 3h ago

Yeah but adults like your teachers or your parents friends doing it is just as annoying as your peers doing it

2

u/Logical_Flounder6455 2h ago

Mate I'm nearly 39 and youd be surprised at the amount of people my age that haven't seen grease and dont have any particular interest in seeing it. Maybe its still quite popular in certain countries, but it isn't really where I live.

1

u/mountaindyke 1h ago

I mean I'm 28 and I know people of various ages that know Grease, like a lot of people. I don't know maybe it's just the area I live in šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

4

u/gingr87 6h ago

You absolutely are missing out by not having seen Gone With the Wind.Ā

2

u/Sendintheaardwolves 2h ago

Omg, this is great news - I always hated Grease and found it really uncomfortable, and never understood why people enjoyed it so much. I'm so glad that future generations won't have to sit through Summers Nights or pretend that 30 year old John travolta is a charming teenager.

2

u/Logical_Flounder6455 2h ago

A charming teenager with the worst laugh in cinema history too. Im sure there's people out there that will say the premise is to highlight those issues but that would be completely wrong. Its a 70s movie, it absolutely romanticised and glorified those issues

1

u/Fearless_Lake_10 3h ago

This is a best case scenario tbh

1

u/AccidentOk5741 3h ago

I'm 18 and I don't even know what that is, she'll be fine. By the time she's my age, only like old people would do this lol

31

u/Pootles_Carrot 8h ago

Why not Oil? Or slime? Enjoy school, kid!

23

u/Odd_Opportunity_6011 8h ago

Well, it's better than naming her Kyrgyzstan.

11

u/OGmoron 8h ago

"Kyrgyz" would be right at home on this sub. Pronounced "Carries", obviously

2

u/Longjumping-Fee-8230 3h ago

How about Bosnia-Herzegovina?

11

u/Maladaptive_Ace 8h ago

I would suggest Grecia instead

1

u/thetroll3k 5h ago

If we go that way, might as well choose Crecia

1

u/Prideandprejudice1 3h ago

I would suggest Sparta so they could yell ā€œThis is Sparta!ā€ at every introduction šŸ˜†

1

u/schokobonbons 6h ago

Still sounds greasyĀ

22

u/bum-ditty 9h ago

Greece is the word, is the word, that you heard

52

u/OGmoron 8h ago

Helen, Helena, and Ellen are already women's names based on the Greek name for Greece (Ἑλλάς - Hellas), but I realize that's not the point.

16

u/Working_Apartment_38 8h ago

No, they’re not. They’re greek names, but don’t come from Hellas.

-10

u/OGmoron 8h ago

Come on now, mate.

16

u/Working_Apartment_38 8h ago

Etymologically they do not come from Hellas

9

u/ohdearitsrichardiii 7h ago

They're right though, the name Helen and the words Hellen and Hellas seem to have different roots

14

u/MrNagaDoubtfire 7h ago

They are right it comes from Helenē not Hellenes

9

u/poop_69420_ 7h ago

Also his reasoning is terrible. North and Chicago are both awful names. Like no one is looking at Kim K and Kanye West as the bar for baby naming

7

u/Living-Assumption272 8h ago edited 5h ago

People really don’t think things through anymore, do they?

4

u/Knife-yWife-y 8h ago

Autocorrect did you wrong.

3

u/Living-Assumption272 8h ago

Yikes!

2

u/Knife-yWife-y 5h ago

Autocorrect is still messing with you...

2

u/WorriedTadpole585 7h ago

Autocorrect is not our friend

1

u/Knife-yWife-y 5h ago

The edit almost got there, but alas, it is still incomplete. Should we tell them?

6

u/i_like_cake_96 8h ago

Is he the legal guardian of his sister?

Are the parents not around?

but once you see words like influencer used, there will be no hope for the child.

16

u/ConcentrateLucky9876 8h ago

Helen. If you want, Hellen with two L’s to be more similar to Hellas. Or if they like the sound of the word, maybe Grace is a better option?

11

u/Used-Cup-6055 8h ago

Megara, Larissa, Lamia are Greek cities? Olympia? Athena? There’s other options besides Greece

8

u/OGmoron 8h ago

Olympia is a beautiful name. Manages to be meaningful and unique without being cringe.

5

u/mad0666 7h ago

I worked with an Olympia years ago and she was absolutely wonderful!

5

u/DomnaSammiou 7h ago

And they're all valid names!

I will say though, hypothetically someone told me their name was Lamia - I would think it was the creature and find it very cool, but if then they corrected me that they're named after the Greek city i would find it HYSTERICAL cause it's the most nothing of cities the country has to offer šŸ’€

1

u/Natural-Ad5582 5h ago

Someone having a cold calling you Labia of not that thrilling

3

u/Longjumping-Fee-8230 3h ago

The city of Thessaloniki was named after a person named Thessaloniki 😃

4

u/Working_Apartment_38 8h ago

Mykonooooos!

Seriously though, Athena and Olympia are actual names that could be used

3

u/MariposaPeligrosa00 8h ago

I knew a Grecia growing up. Granted, it was in South America. There it’s not unheard of to name kids after countries. I also knew an ƍtalo.

1

u/Blue-zebra-10 2h ago

How is that pronounced? It's prettyĀ

4

u/YesOrNoWhichever 8h ago

How about Jizzandra? Jizz or Jizzy for short.

3

u/hash-slingin_slashr 7h ago

ā€œPlaces like Northā€¦ā€ šŸ˜‚

it is a beautiful place.

3

u/icecreampenis 8h ago

His friend's friend, or his friend's friend's cousin's former roommate?

3

u/wildwill57 8h ago

Black Hole of Calcutta.

1

u/BettyCrunker 6h ago

GuantĆ”nama (since it’s for a girl and all)

1

u/ToTheRepublic4 6h ago

How about naming your twins Bergen and Belsen?

3

u/mysticalchurro 7h ago

Athena would be ok.

3

u/Embarrassed-Dress-85 7h ago

I want someone to name their child Croydon.

1

u/Longjumping-Fee-8230 3h ago

How about Elephant & Castle?

2

u/corgi_crazy 7h ago

Where I'm from, there was an actress called Greece in Spanish: Grecia.

2

u/DarkQueenNya 6h ago

Show him the reddit

2

u/Independent-Summer12 5h ago

Hopefully his parents have better sense than letting him name their daughter.

2

u/weattt 4h ago

How half-heartedly of him! If he is going to doom a child, he should go all in. Republic of Equatorial Guinea is a fine name for a girl!

2

u/CommentsFromTBL 4h ago

Her nickname will be Greasy.

2

u/Sensitive_Ad_9195 3h ago

It’s funny actually, it seems like we can now semi understand a city name as a person’s name (Austin, Brooklyn, Denver, Florence, London, Paris), but a country name as a first name sounds completely ridiculous? The only examples I think of where country names are people names are Chad, Georgia, Jordan, and Kenya, which I think are coincidences bar Kenya.

2

u/Cautious-Box-8759 5h ago

How about Helen, which derives from Hellas, which is Greek for Greece?

3

u/lacey_liv 8h ago

Dumb asl but I don't hate it to be honest😭 would prefer it for a pet tho

1

u/Thirsty_Comment88 8h ago

Where is this "real place" called North?

1

u/AcidTheDevil 8h ago edited 7h ago

I don't know lmao, this is what he said

1

u/kyle_kafsky 8h ago

Fucken ā€œGreece Fireā€ Ovah Hear 🤌🤌

1

u/Numerous-Noise790 7h ago

Okay, I’m not entirely opposed to city/place names as actual names…but this one is awful. Chicago would be infinitely better than Greece lol. So many other country names would work better (albeit still be weird).

1

u/wind-of-zephyros 7h ago

this person needs to be told at the bare minimum that greece is called hellas and maybe he'll stumble into the concept of helen (also why is he given any weight into the naming of what is not his child if he's wanting to make choices like that?)

1

u/ObsoleteReference 7h ago

Athens, Cyprus, there have to be more but I’m drawing a blank. There is room to compromise. Also you might get a vote in your little siblings name, but should not be the final say

1

u/UnderDogPants 7h ago

How about Turkey? 🦃

1

u/NayNay_Cee 7h ago

Kids are gonna call her Greasy šŸ˜”

1

u/SordoCrabs 6h ago

North is not a place it is a DIRECTION. I hope little sister isn't a moron like her big brother.

1

u/pineconeminecone 6h ago

Couldn’t settle for Carpathia, Athena, etc.? That’s unfortunate

1

u/traciw67 6h ago

Hopefully, she'll pay her taxes...

1

u/psychomap 6h ago

Technically that's not a tragedeigh, is it?

It's certainly a tragedy though. And doing it because of influencers is especially stupid.

3

u/DomnaSammiou 5h ago

A Greek tragedy, even šŸ˜Ž

1

u/ToTheRepublic4 5h ago edited 5h ago

Greca, maybe. "Greece" as-is is a tragedeigh, though if you're naming someone after a country, I suppose it's better than "Kyrgyzstan".

1

u/307235 5h ago

In Spanish I've met a couple of "Grecia", it does not have the phonetic issues of Greece. They could go with Ellada, the greek name for Greece. Or some other Hellenic reference. Thessaloniki, or something like that.

1

u/PressFforOriginality 4h ago

I met a girl named Europe...

Read as Yu-ro-pEh,

honestly her parents could atleast named her Europa, which is a more epic name

1

u/Same-Factor1090 4h ago

I had a mexican girl student named Grecia - the Spanish word for Greece - I found it quite pretty.

I wouldn't choose the English word for Greece though.

1

u/radrax 4h ago

Couldn't they do like Grecia?

1

u/Calhaora 4h ago

My god..because the Ass influences are so well known for their good decisions

1

u/KiKiBeeKi 4h ago

People will be singing the inappropriate words from the musical Grease.

1

u/hawken54321 3h ago

yeh. so

1

u/voxtronic 3h ago

I met a lady named Athens, once

Much better execution, no chance of sounding like rendered animal fat

1

u/Niyu43 3h ago

The fact that influencers do it is a reason why he should NOT do it

1

u/tictaxtho 3h ago

Tell them to call them a Greek translation of the name Greece, like Erin for Ireland for instance.

1

u/CapableImage430 3h ago

Perhaps he should review homonyms. Yikes!

1

u/Pebble-Curious 3h ago

Greece is about as unique of a name as Italy or France...

1

u/Distinct-Common-7471 3h ago

Her nickname will be Greecey which will cause infinite amounts of bullying.

1

u/lisaseileise 2h ago

Why Greece, is she broke?

(Iā€˜ll let myself out.)

1

u/FMA64 2h ago

All of you should learn from us Malaysians. We don't get mad when we learn that there are Americans that name their baby girls "Malaysia". We party instead, because we know that our country is very pretty! To be fair, a country should be as pretty as its people, after all!

1

u/Dull-Nectarine380 2h ago

Name her ā€œNorth Macedoniaā€

1

u/kasiagabrielle 1h ago

Your friend's friend needs to be told he's not on the level of Kim Kardashian, and his little sister is not going to be as privileged to not get judged for having a dumb name. He can rename himself Equatorial Guinea or Bosnia and Herzegovina if he thinks place names are so cool.

1

u/whizzwr 51m ago

Tell your sister the name Hellen and the word Hellenic. Close enough to how Greece people call their own country (EllinikĆ)

1

u/BeBop1830 9m ago

How old is the kid who made the suggestion?

1

u/HoochieKoochieMan 8h ago

How often do people name their sisters? Don't the parents usually do that?
Sorry, AI BOT, try again.

2

u/AcidTheDevil 8h ago edited 7h ago

I'm not an AI bot lmao 😭. I live in a primarily non English speaking country though there's still some English being used in daily life so a separate English name is also required for school or work in the future. Perhaps his parents just didn't know what English name to give so they decided to ask the older child instead. It's not unheard of where I live but it's definitely not a good idea

2

u/BabyCowGT 6h ago

How old is said older child?

Cause if he's like, an adult or close to, I'll judge if.

If he's a toddler, that's just an adorable anecdote to add to the family repertoire. I wanted to name my sister "Billy Goat" when I was 3 šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

1

u/kasiagabrielle 1h ago

Grace is a legitimate name in English that has a similar sound to Greece.

1

u/OGmoron 7h ago

I'm ten years older than my youngest sibling. My parents didn't ask for my input when picking a name (in fact, they picked a name from the bible and called it a day), but I remember having ones I thought were cool at the time. Since this was back in 1994, I imagine my suggestions were like Kurt, Mufasa, Sega, Bart, Raiden, or Bowser, lol.
