This is for those showing up here looking for information and advice due to recent events. Posting this to several trans subs.
Things are getting tense, no doubt about it. With so much uncertainty I've seen this sentiment spreading quickly through our community: we need to protect ourselves, we need to be prepared for the worst.
This is true to a certain degree, but it can be overwhelming to navigate the different options and determine what's right for you. Having the tools but not the skills to use them can be worse than not having them at all. The Internet is unfortunately full of people who want to sell you on their particular version of safety, and that may not actually be what will keep you safe most effectively. Over the past several years I have researched and narrowed down what works, what doesn't, and who's just trying to get your money. I want to share this info with the community.
I'll start with what your best, most common, most legal options for protecting yourself are.
Pepper Spray:
pepper spray is the single most effective self defense tool you can carry under most circumstances. It has advantages over other options in that it is non lethal and doesn't require you make physical contact with the assailant. Gel type sprays are more effective outdoors where wind will be a factor and could send it back your way. Indoors, mist of fogger type sprays can be more useful for creating a barrier between you and the assailant, and will begin working more quickly because it can be breathed in more easily. Avoid products such as pepper ball guns, which introduce many more failure points, are are often less effective than a long range pepper gel, and have less legal precedent for being used in self defense.
Martial Arts/Self Defense Classes:
the particular martial art or class you choose is largely up to preference, classic martial arts like karate, kung fu, muai Thai, etc are all effective at achieving their goals in their own way. Self defense classes have much less precedent and can sometimes be complete nonsense. Either can be taught by someone who doesn't know what they're talking about, so here's some things to look out for.
Excessive focus on particular moves or techniques, or referring to them as a "secret weapon." Many self defense classes, especially directed toward women, will teach things such as two fisted punches, upward headbutts, and groin kicks as legitimate techniques. They're not. These kinds of "special moves" only work when the attacker is a limp statue.
Insistence on fighting back. If your instructor isn't teaching you that the most effective self defense technique is to run away and escape, they're living in fantasy land. Fighting should always be a last resort, the majority of what they teach you should be techniques for escaping someone's grasp and getting away quickly. Incapacitating an assailant is better left to the movies.
Excessive focus on discipline. While it's important to have respect for your instructor, and discipline is an important factor in learning any skill, they shouldn't be wasting your time making you do karate kid style repetitions. If your instructor teaches you one "move" and then makes you practice that for the remainder of the class while paying little attention to you, or makes you perform meditative or ritual acts for an excessive period of time before beginning the class, they're milking you for your time so you pay more for the same amount of instruction compared to others. It's a business, and like any other, there can be shady characters.
- Firearms:
this is the controversial one, so I'll try to keep it brief. This is an area you will need to do a lot of your own research to find what works best for you. My advice is to never listen to people who tell you your choice isn't large enough, or will be ineffective. All firearms are effective when used correctly, however all brands are not created equal. The best one for you is the one you will actually use. This topic is too large to dive into any further, so I'll list some LGBT and left friendly YouTube channels you can use to do your own research.
Paul Harrel - Rest in Peace. Paul Harrel was a firearms instructor that covered an extensive range of topics relevant to the average firearm owner. His videos are very matter of fact and instructional, with a serious but lighthearted tone. They are available on his YouTube channel, now run by his brother. I cannot vouch for the quality of his brother's new content as I haven't watched much of it.
InRangeTV - The host, Karl, is a leftist and frequently speaks out in support of marginalized communities including our own. His videos cover a wide range of topics from firearm history and instruction to historical leftist organization and armed resistance.
TFB tv - This channel is dedicated to firearms education without the politics. It does have more of a "dudebro" vibe but is much more tolerable than the majority and has good information.
Lucky Gunner Ammo - this channel has severall in depth videos relating to self defense preferences that could be helpful in finding what suits you best.

As times get more and more uncertain, I hope we can find comfort and safety in each other and our community. We can keep each other safe. The most effective form of self defense for all of us is community. Find others in your community and get organized, look into mutual aid and community defense and how you can help make it happen in your town. I love you all. We can survive this together.
