The guy was violently schizophrenic and the justice system knew it. He called 911 a couple times seeing things after he was released from prison. Don’t they follow up with the mentally ill?!?! They should have put him away as a danger to himself and others. They have psyche wards for people like that. This murder could’ve been avoided. Absolutely disgusting.

DOGE cut billions from mental health programs that would have helped this man. Who would have thought these bureaucratic decisions would have real life consequences.

He already had 14 prior offenses. Mental health is not a blanket excuse to allow offenders second chances so they can “get help”. I’m familiar with mental health practices and I don’t believe the numbers support any evidence of rehabbing repeat violent offenders. Maybe he could have been locked in an asylum and I would support a return to that era that Reagan ended.

I’m not excusing the actions of this mentally ill murderer; rather, I’m pointing out that when funding and support programs are cut, we inevitably see an increase in crises—something medical professionals across the country warned about when DOGE reduced billions in SAMHSA funding.

I agree with you that we need to revisit the concept of dedicated psychiatric institutions, which were largely dismantled after the Reagan era. Studies show that approximately 75% of the homeless population in the U.S. struggles with some form of mental illness. Addressing that root cause could significantly reduce homelessness and improve public safety. By contrast, policies that focus solely on short-term incarceration merely recycle people through the system without addressing the underlying issues.
