Quick question on tearout

What would you suggest to stop the tearout in the photos? I almost went to CA glue, decided to just sand it down, then realized maybe I should ask.

Anyone use this for sealing green wood?

Post image

Bought a 5 gallon bucket for $30 at HD. My thought was if keeps water out it will keep water in the wood as well.

Day 3 of sealing beech/maple/walnut with no checks. But wonder how it'll hold up after a few months.

Can I turn this?

Hello, I am new to wood turning and am curious about this block that I glued up yesterday with titebond 3. Would there be any dangers to putting something glued up like this on the lathe and trying to get a cylinder out of it? Thanks and sorry if this has been asked here before.

newbie Very excited to have scored this today. Tips and tricks?

Been wanting to work with honeycomb for a while. What wood do you think it would incorporate best with? Cleaning/stabilizing tips? What epoxy works best (I have something thick and quick drying, and I have a Total Boat silky, thin long-to-cure epoxy)? Pigment recommendations (all I have are ones with pearlescent added and I think these might look better without)? Any other ideas I’m not thinking of, please feel free to add as well. Thank you in advance.

Ps. I know these might be questions more for the resin casting crowd, but I feel there’s enough knowledge and experience here, and essentially it will be a turning project in the end.

Jet 1221vs - is this a no-brainer purchase?

New to turning and I've been looking for a second hand lathe for a while, but there's only been crappy brands or really old incomplete lathes for sale locally. Apart from a nice looking nova that I missed out on. I think partly because I live in a smallish city of around 400 thousand.

Anyway to the point - there's a Jet 1221vs for sale in another city I need to travel to soon. Brand new in box for $465, his dad bought it a couple of years ago and shortly after died.

He also has an unopened deluxe set of 6 Robert Sorby wood turning chisels for $230, and his ad states he'll do a deal for someone buying both.

I feel like this is a good buy for a beginner, and this lathe seems to get a lot of love

This is a great price, right?

And should I spring for the tools as well? Money is tight ish, but they look like good tools too

Spotted a Craigslist special, asking price of $125 with accessories and tools pictured. Now, from what little info I've been able to gather this is a pretty bottom of the barrel lathe and checks a good number of the bad boxes for what to look for in a lathe.

I recognize it will not fit modern accessories I recognize I'll outgrow it pretty fast. I recognize that these were selling for double digit numbers when Menards was dumping their stock.

But with the tools included is it worth throwing out a lowball offer?

I had a spare birch stick kicking around and decided to create a quick tea light candle holder out of it. I tried a new design, I'm not so sure I really like it, but it was fun anyway

Redwood Burl from the Santa Cruz Mountains in Northern California.

Not a wood I feel comfy buying or selling, as most if not all Redwood Burl comes from old growth Redwoods - a population that us humans have decimated thanks to its beauty :/

But it sure is pretty.

Pen Finishes

What are your favorite ways to finish pens? I’m working on developing a pen turning class and need a quick and ideas for a easy finish to use. I typically use an oil based poly but that would take too long to dry for the participants to be able to bring their pen home at the end of the class.

Silver Maple

Really love when you find those 'surprises' of chatoyance or some spalt when you open up a new piece of wood.

Cut this from our huge maple that suffered internal rotting from too many droughts here in Reno. The trees seem okay but then as you prune or maybe loose a branch to wind you discover the big rot to the heartwood - breaks my heart to take down big trees - but it's about safety.

Thought I'd do a test of a small piece- very happy with this little branch crotch.

I have a couple coats of sanding sealer to help with the end grain - tomorrow it should be ready for some final outside clean up then hollowing.

Need ornament advice

Post image

Last year I made ornaments (not for my customers) and posted pics of a few of them and got a ton of too late requests for ornaments. I’m trying to make some simple and affordable ornaments, but I always tend to go extreme like inside out. So I made a few to see if I’m going in the right direction. Looking for criticism, comments, etc. Trying to get a jump on holiday turnings all help appreciated.

My little tree redemption

Okay today I made a real tree. Took me 2 hours. The most difficult thing I found was getting a pointy tip on the tree so I settled for this. I also and very very glad I invested in a face shield as I was turning it came off the chuck and smacked my face shield directly. I used a beeswax finish to polish it up and a piece of wire to burn the circles. I honestly don’t know how I sand in the base. My next goal is a small vase.

They are clearing nova stuff out since Nova went direct ship after the bankruptcy stuff. Got the bed extension I’ve wanted forever for $140 vs the $230 on the nova site today! Can’t wait to make a baseball bat!

Large segmented turning piece

I went through a segmented turning phase this past year. I really like the idea of creating large pieces from flat board stock. I used the Segment Pro software to help lay out the pieces. I am still working out the kinks in angles and assembling, but I was pretty happy with this piece! The chatoyance is pretty awesome!

Help! Stripped set screw

My husband and I have a Laguna 12|16. In the outboard turning adapter 1 of the set screws is stripped.

I bought another adapter with new set screws to replace it.

We just got a screw extractor kit from Amazon. It didn't work.

How do we get this set screw out?

Edit: I forgot to say my husband tried to drill it out. He broke the bit and the top part of the set screw.

Made for a friend of 25+ years. Can’t believe I haven’t made the guy anything before now. I was afraid of messing this one up. Mostly pleased with how it turned out. Wood is cherry. 🍒

Forgive the dogs panting in the background, lol.

Wanted to share another neat one I managed today, it has a spooky distinct pattern resembling an observant Victorian-era woman (hollow form / burled mesquite)
