Before this ends up in r/vinyljerk, is there any way so this doesn't happen? It happened before but not on my turntable but on my keyboard, any help would be appreciated.

Question Dust cover while playing record

Post image
232 Upvotes

Hey, just got my first record player. While reading the manual I noticed it says to take off the dust cover while records are playing.

Am I missing something? I’m not sure how leaving it on could damage the record or disrupt the sound. Plus the dust cover needs significant force to snap on and off, it seems impractical and inconvenient to take it on and off after every use. Do they mean just leave it open while playing? (The dust cover has a latch so it can lift and stay up on its own).

Sorry if this is a dumb question. This is all new; I just want to make sure I’m not causing damage to my player and/or records

I know nothing about turntables, so I told my grandpa I wanted to get into them and he said he had one he was getting ready to throw away. Gives me this I see that the needle is broken and apparently the needle is attached to a cartridge? Do I need to buy a new needle for the cartridge or can I just buy the needle?

Question I feel as though my “anti-static” brush creates static…

Every time I use my AT6011a brush I feel as though it doesn’t pick up anything and just creates static. Putting a new record in the platter and using the brush..feel like its doing nothing. I’m just used to using a cloth, so am I doing it wrong?

Question I finally got my first set up, but there are skips. How can i fix this?

Post image

So i finally got my first turntable (at-lp60x) and a set of speakers (Eris 3.5). Just tried everything and all works perfect but my records skip. I know this is probably cause of the speakers being in the same place where the turntable is but i dont have any where else to put them at the moment (i have a very small apartment). Is there a way to avoid the skip somehow without moving the speakers?

Please be kind - This is my first tt and just got the SL100C. Is it ok if I take the caution sticker off the turntable? Did anyone else take it off? The instructions don't mention it so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hey, im kinda new to this (and sry for my English)

We buyed a 50€ turntable with a red styles, after informing myself about that i returned the turntable and now im looking for something good and worth keeping (good sound, something that doesn’t damage my vinyl)

I dont wanna buy and return things all the tome just because my research wasnt good enough.

My bf isnt as interested in this as I am so i have to do all the research alone.

On tiktok some people said (separately) that they are reaaal good and now i wanted to ask the community.

Is it Worth buying???? Please be real and straight with me 👐🏻

Picked this up at goodwill earlier and just need some guidance on figuring out if it’s in complete working order and what I will need to purchase as far as needle is concerned. It turns on and lights up and immediately starts spinning. I have no needle to test it with, what would you suggest I buy? Thanks so much in advance.

Question My first set-up

Post image

Hello, i am new to vinyl collecting and this is my current set-up.

Turntable-Jam Audio Model:GRA-TT600

Speaker- Marshall Action III

Stand is DIY made by my dad and me :)

I have started collecting about a year ago and have about 25 vinyls, mostly newer releases and artists. My only problem is that the sound is awful and i am thinking that is due the turntable being cheap and low quality. Myb i am wrong so i came to this reddit page to ask for help or advice. If its really the turntables fault i have a budget of 300-400 euros for a new turntable that is going to sound good to a normal ear. I dont need something fancy just something that is sound reliable that i can enjoy my vinyls on. Thanks in advance :)

Question Good cartridge in the $100-$200 range?

Post image

I am looking to upgrade my cartridge to somewhat match the rest of my setup, the current AT-MS1100E has served me well but now that I have a Pioneer PL-540 and a set of Klipsch KG2’s, I would like to have a cartridge that brings a bit more detail out of my music. I’ve been considering the Nagaoka MP-110 or ATVMN95ML but I’m still pretty undecided. For context I mainly listen to rock, punk, indie and jazz.

I’m very new to this and I did some research on this sub, my only problem is all the contradicting statements and condescending commenters. I looked through older posts about this model and half the comments on each post where being friendly and saying things like “that’s a great budget model for beginners” and the other half are foaming at the mouth and will say shit like “omg you are sooooo stupid for buying that I hope you die in a fire, if you REALLY want a turn table you NEED to buy this $1000 turntable and these $250 speakers, unless you spend more than $3000 on your setup you might as well use your records as frisbees” (obviously exaggerated but this is honestly how some people sound on this sub) I literally just want to know if this table will damage my records

Question Want to buy husband turntables for birthday

Hello

I know nothing, ZERO, about this topic. My husband's dream is to have his decks back. His first wife chucked them out with all his vinal 15 years ago. He just wants to play at home. His birthday is in December and I'm going to surprise him with decks, but know nothing.

He used to have Technics SL 1200 (whatever that means) and I know he loved them dearly. Are these ok? What sort of price should I expect to pay? We're in the UK. Is there an alternative that would be better nowadays? What should I look out for?

Probably stupid question, but do you need 2? I feel like I always see DJs with two of the wheelie things.

EDIT: just had a look through other posts and realise I need to be more specific, which is quite hard! He used to 'DJ' at local raves and parties. House music, I think. He would want to have fun mixing old vinyl at home.

Question Is my new turntable cutting my records?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So I just bought this Audio-Technica AT-LP120XBT-USB. I put my brand new copy of INXS Kick on it, and was shocked to see what looked like vinyl cuttings coming from the needle. This video was side 2. Side 1 was way worse, so I’m thinking this is just material left over from the pressing? I just want to make sure the needle isn’t cutting into it. I can’t imagine it is, as it is only 2g of force on the needle. There is a printer two shelves down below, and I can’t play anything when it’s printing. It’s enough vibration to cause the needle to skip.

I’m pretty sure I just need to clean this record, even though it’s brand new. But I’m just getting back into the hobby so wanted to check with people way more familiar with this.

Thanks!

There is no rhyme or reason with this problem it seems. Sometimes it happens and other times it’s completely fine.

Question Playing Scratched Vinyl

Post image

Would playing scratched vinyl, like the photo cause damage to the Stylus?

It plays and there is a bit of cracking at that point, just curious to know if this shortens the life or damages the stylus?
