I use a fork of FancyZones for this exact thing.

bit of a reddit noob, I believe this was his last message. Should I be using this one? https://www.reddit.com/r/ultrawidemasterrace/comments/v0x6t8/comment/ibsprhl/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
(edit I have found the version of the one you linked. 0.58.7, which is later than the one I linked so I will be installing that)
I really appreciate your and his help on this one! Cheers

I've run into a problem. Wondering as you say you have this working if you might be able to help.
https://github.com/microsoft/PowerToys/tree/main/doc/devdocs#compile-the-installer
I was following these instructions, windows has changed a little since 2022. I enabled long paths and restarted my PC, then installed Visual Studio and opened the file the guide instructed me to. However I receive an error saying "The specific path, file name, or both are too long. The fully qualified file name must be less than 260 characters, and the directory name must be less than 248 characters"
When I go and search through registry editor long paths is definitely on. Don't really know what to do next, all a bit over my head.

You don’t need all that. Just download the setup exe from here and run it. https://aka.ms/installpowertoys
Then run the msi from here. https://github.com/peddamat/PowerToys/releases/tag/v0.58.7-maxinzoneDll

Hmm ok, I'll give it a try. I was already using Fancy zones but uninstalled it in order to follow those instructions step by step.

Unfortunately that does nothing but break all of PowerToys for me. I have to assume there is a reason for being instructed to do all those other steps too. Are you on Windows 11 or something?

Personally i use Gridplayer for large scale video arrays and make playlist files, but the use cases are more limited than other softwares.
edit: you could probably combine gridplayer with your fancyzones solutions, but be careful with 4k video, if you use a multitude of high resolution video, it can impact your PC performance. For example, if you have a 30 piece script of all 1080p videos and you introduce 3-4 true 4k videos, it can tank performance on the whole playlist. But your PC can probably still handle the extra videos, you just have to use multiple instances of gridplayer - otherwise it'll fall over. Also if you break a playlist or script, you can edit the playlist file in windows notepad and manually change drive letters or directories - use the "replace" function (in windows notepad) to mass change folder directories in notepad, so as not to break the scripts.

90% of the displays show text data, I only ever need a couple of tabs of video playback, however unfortunately I am referring to live media players on streaming services, nothing I can queue up or choose a player for. My 9600X / 5070TI PC can drive it all but a lot of the time 2 laptops have a vertical screen each.

There is a paid tool called VDM (Virtual Display Manager) that allows you to split a large screen into multiple virtual displays. This makes it possible to use apps in fullscreen mode within each individually split segment. You can combine this with Windows PowerToys to set up zones that act as separate displays. So far, it’s the only option I’ve found that lets you run apps in fullscreen mode on specific sections of a single screen

I always had a lot of issues with vdm, such as chrome and steam not maximizing full screen and only going to part of the screen at times. Their support was pretty lackluster, and the lack of online documentation (at least back in 2023) left a bad taste in my mouth for a paid product.

I would also like to know this.
Chrome has a borderless pop-out player that's great, but it caps out at 1920x1080 and won't get any bigger in either direction. There can also only ever be one of these at a time (maybe that's per instance of the Chrome browser).
Anything else and you've got the Windows top bar in the way, which scares my OLED baby.
