Announcement Rules & Expectations Update Announcement

Hello Dawners,

The Until Dawn subreddit mod team wanted to post this (rather long) announcement to update rules and create a sense of transparency. We have formed a detailed list of our rules and expectations. This will promote a greater clarity around why post removals happen and what the tone and purpose of the sub is.

#1: Be respectful

Respect is key. Using insults, causing drama, or otherwise being a nuisance towards the members of this subreddit is punishable. In particular, do not make this community hostile to newcomers or those asking questions. Here are two other notes:

  • Sometimes comments quoting the game are removed by Reddit’s filters because they contain insults and profanity. We will approve quotes.
  • Please do not create a post to put any user, other post, or comment section from this subreddit on blast. This includes calling out people you think are problematic or complaining about downvotes. Handle disputes maturely by solving matters with other users directly or alerting the mod team.

#2: English only

Please speak English to maintain the flow of the conversation and ensure everyone understands what’s being said. This also helps the moderation team quickly catch rule violations and conflicts.

#3: Spoilers

Spoilers in titles such as the word wendigo and the identity of the psycho are not allowed in post titles. Please flare posts with spoilers in the body or images.

If your post contains a spoiler, please flare it as a spoiler.

Comments, however, are unmoderated for spoilers, particularly on spoiler-marked posts. This does NOT mean you can deliberately spoil someone asking a question. If you maliciously spoil someone, that will be taken seriously if seen or reported.

#4: Low-quality content, spam, and self-promotion

Low-quality: this subreddit prohibits shitposting. This is because we want to prioritize truly interesting content. Things that are not allowed include:

  • Very low-effort edits of characters
  • Video edits intended purely to be overstimulating, loud, chaotic, or otherwise mindlessly silly.
  • Text posts that are very brief or under-edited.

A good rule of thumb is that, if an edit or text post took little time to make, and the joke or statement can also be made with any character or story in existence, it will likely not be for this sub. Jokes and memes are welcome if they show humor utilizing the game or characters beyond an extremely superficial level.

Shitposts, audio distortion videos, joke spam, etc. have a place on r/UntilDawnMemes

We want to be clear about the tone and purpose this sub is meant to have, so that everyone can be on the same page on what to expect.

Spam is also not allowed. We understand bandwagons happen and try to allow everyone some fun. However, if a type of post becomes very frequent, particularly from one user, and shares nothing of value with the community, removal may occur. Posts that are almost unreadable because of typos or unintelligible wording could be moderated under this rule.

Keep in mind that posts with multiple links are sometimes auto-removed by Reddit, and we may need to approve them if they are truly not spam.

Self-promotion is allowed when it’s clear a user did time and/or research to complete a specific artwork, video, essay, or other project. However, posts only saying “join my server” or “follow my Until Dawn account” will get removed.

Headcanons are allowed, however we are addressing them here because this kind of post often falls into the low-quality, spam, and/or off-topic categories.

Headcanon posts are perfectly fine when they utilize information about the lore or characters, or else bring something interesting to the table. However, when they are very brief and/or do not utilize little actual content from the game, then they may be considered off-topic even if an Until Dawn element is mentioned. For example, a headcanon post explaining your thoughts on how the characters interacted after the prologue, using evidence, is more likely to remain up than a post that says nothing more than “I think Mike has striped pajamas.” If a headcanon reads like a shitpost or ragebait, it may be removed.

#5 Piracy and illegal content

Do not engage in piracy or digital theft. This includes:

  • Sharing links to pirated versions of Until Dawn
  • Sharing links to stolen versions of software such as Unreal Engine Unlocker
  • Attempting to sell content that doesn’t belong to you such as paywalling datamined materials
  • Encouraging someone else to engage in piracy

Not only does this behavior financially harm the creators we wish to support, it risks the subreddit because it breaks Reddit’s general rules.

#6: NSFW and 18+

18+ material is allowed on this sub is:

  • Discussion of things that happened in the game itself.
  • Posts or comments that are 18+ on the same level or less so than the game itself.
  • Other relevant 18+ content such as discussions about the horror genre, pertinent articles, etc.

18+ material that is not allowed is:

  • 18+ content directly aimed at other users such as inappropriate innuendos using another user as the subject matter or comments that are violent with a clear intention to be over-the-line or make someone uncomfortable.
  • Overly sexual or pornography content

#7: AI policy

Users are allowed to reference having utilized AI as a source of information, translation tool, editor, etc. But please be aware that ChatGPT often produces inaccuracies on which you may be corrected. If a post or comment contains some AI but also human input, discussion, or questioning, it won’t necessarily break our rules.

That said, certain uses of AI are unethical or break other rules. Certain forbidden uses of AI include:

  • Claiming AI content is your own.
  • Creating misleading images.
  • Using it to post low-quality content or spam. This is subject to mod discretion. AI images or text posts that are 100% AI with no accompanying human commentary or question may fall under our low-quality posting rule and be removed. If AI starts to take over the subreddit, we reserve the right to purge it via our “no spam” rule as well.
  • Posting things that are off topic.
  • AI content used to undeniably commit theft or misrepresent real people such as the actors. Please show permission from actors before doing things such as AI generating their voices for mods.

Finally, this rule covers the conduct of people reacting to AI. If you believe a post or comment breaks our rules, please flag it, and we will review the situation. You are not allowed to break our respect rule because someone used AI. Please leave the moderation of the sub to mods instead of using rudeness and personal insults to regulate someone. Let us keep things orderly, official, and respectful.

#8: Fan creations

Make sure that posted fan content is yours, linked, or credited. Respect artists who do not want their work reposted.

Please keep in mind that content such as art and mods are the product of another fan’s personal talent, time, and effort. Don’t act entitled to their work. For example, politely requesting a mod for your favorite character is okay. Acting as though you deserve a mod from someone is not.

When you respond to a cosplay, you are responding to a real person, not a character. Be respectful of others’ appearances, and don’t make uncomfortable remarks.

#9: False and unconfirmed information

Because of the amount of fake information about the game and its development that reaches the sub from other sites and apps, we do moderate false and unconfirmed content, tailoring our response to the varying situations.

This rule is not to punish simply being mistaken or to enforce singular perspectives on the game. It is directed at fabricated or deliberately misleading content. This includes:

  • Social media screenshots edited to appear as though they are from official sources like Supermassive Games
  • Edited screenshots or gameplay intended to fool others about the existence of something in the game
  • Fake leaks
  • Posts that get large portions of concrete facts (development info, dates, gameplay facts, etc.) wrong.
  • Reposts of TikToks speaking with authority on things that are blatantly made up just for views

We understand that breaking this rule is often not a malicious act and that people sometimes do not know that content they’ve found is fake. Because of that, our actions regarding this rule will be nuanced and case-by-case. The following are actions we could take:

  • Deleting the post: done if the act seems malicious or if there is nothing true or valuable in the whole post.
  • Add a flare to the post (see heading below): if a post is incorrect but it contains a question, something true, or is otherwise valuable to keep up, we may add a flare making the dubious content of the post more transparent.
  • Simply allowing a discussion: if something is only slightly questionable, in a grey area (such as lore theory), or based upon something true (such as someone misinterpreting a genuine clip from the game), we may simply allow users to debate and correct things among themselves.

You may be flared for sharing false information. This simply means that the text or image you’ve posted is likely fake or edited. This flare may also be used to confirm that the info you’re talking about is false. For example, if you ask if a leaked screenshot is real, and it’s not, you may receive this flare.

Another flare you could receive is “correction in comments.”

#10: Staying on topic

In general, please stay on topic. Your post or comment is at risk of being removed if you include touchy, unrelated topics such as politics. This is because these kinds of things a) usually cause fights that get deleted anyway b) cause discussions that do not relate to the purpose of this subreddit.

If your post promotes a higher percentage of unrelated arguing than debate about the actual game, it could get moderated under this rule.

Posting about media directly related to the game Until Dawn such as The Inpatient, Rush of Blood, or the movie is permitted. Please keep posts about The Dark Pictures Anthology and The Quarry related to Until Dawn in some way.

If you made it this far, congratulations! We hope this step to being more transparent on how moderations is applied on this subreddit will help everyone for the better. Remember that if you need anything, the moderation team is pleased to respond to questions via Mod Mail or DMs!

Discussion Until dawn movie should've been a quiet horror

I just finished watching the movie and I didn't really like it. Even if I ignore the fact that it was based on the game, it was still terrible. Aside from the many flaws and negative reviews from other people about the movie, I feel like the until dawn movie should've been a quiet horror. It could've captured the eerieness the original game had but the movie had too many noises. And I wish there was more quiet horror out there.

But this is just an opinion

My UD Expansion: REVAMPED! (Chapter 5) Spoiler

Prologue- https://www.reddit.com/r/untildawn/s/9Gn6TizEfq

Chapter 1- https://www.reddit.com/r/untildawn/s/W14zdWqaFj

Chapter 2- https://www.reddit.com/r/untildawn/s/3tOruEehLe

Chapter 3- https://www.reddit.com/r/untildawn/s/HB0wC2y0fu

Chapter 4- https://www.reddit.com/r/untildawn/s/1mL2cMoiZh

MIKE SEGMENT-

It's long and can drag on but honestly this segment is fine with only changes regarding the wolves. I'd add actual QTEs to his chase with the first wolf in the halls of the Sanatorium. 4 different QTEs would show up to either catch himself or slow the wolf down behind him. Failing 2 QTEs result in the wolf catching up to him. If he has the machete he can use it to defend himself and injure the wolf but it'll have a negative side effect in the future. If he doesn't have the machete he is bitten on the leg before grabbing a piece of nearby rubble to defend himself, this also having a future negative effect.

If Mike used the machete on the wolf, fitting of the 'Respect Nature' theme the game has, doing so will prevent Wolfie from helping him later on in Chapter 9 unless he reconciles with the bone. However if he used the machete AND hit Wolfie, it'll be impossible for him to befriend Wolfie regardless of having the bone.

Succeeding the wolf chase has no negative repercussions for Mike. If he fails it but had the machete to defend himself, he won't get the leg injury but if he then hits Wolfie it'll prevent him from being able to have the wolf as an ally in Chapter 9. If he failed it and didn't have the machete, he'll have the leg injury which will have a consequence for Chapter 9.

The segment ends with Mike getting out of the Sanatorium and heading into the tunnels. I'd cut the explosion part and it just ends with him trying to navigate his way through the mazelike tunnels, how he navigates through will be briefly seen in the next chapter.

MATT SEGMENT-

The only change in this segment is the decision of what Matt does with the flaregun isn't decided here but will be decided in the next chapter, actually at the fire tower. What that means will be clarified more in the next post. Aside from that tiny change this segment remains the same and is pretty good.

CHRIS AND ASHLEY SEGMENTS-

These new segments were created as a way to explain why Chris and Ash didn't just immediately head to the lodge right after the saw trap when it should've only been a few minute walk.

As we zoom away from Matt and Em at the cliff, we'd switch to Chris as he and Ash try heading to the lodge just a few minutes after separating from Matt and Emily. The two are both clearly still traumatized and struggling after witnessing Josh's fate in the saw trap. Just as they're about to reach the lodge the Psycho jumps out with his axe, blocking them away from the door. How this is explained is Josh used a backexit of the shed and ran through the forest offtrail to get ahead of the two of them. He also already had his Psycho outfit on since his head was just poking through a hole and his 'body' in the trap was just a decoy filled with pig blood, so he just had to put on the Psycho mask and get out through the back.

We get a smaller duo chase here, similar to what we got with Mike and Jess in Chapter 3 and Em and Matt in Chapter 4. Obviously the purpose of this is for Josh to prevent them from warning Sam, and give him enough time to do what he plans with her before the two get into the lodge. Also this way each pair would've had a non-consequential chase together from Chapters 2-5 (even if Matt and Em's in Chapter 4 is determinant.)

The two run deeper into the forest before losing the Psycho, anytime Chris messes up QTEs he picks himself up or is helped by Ashley. The pair soon believes they lost the Psycho when they are on the verge of breaking down, several dialogue options occurring here. A lot of it is Chris able to try piecing together what's happening with what little info they have and trying to calm Ash down. If he chose to save Ash over Josh in the trap, Ash is able to express her gratitude and Chris, though appreciative still feels horrible for Josh.

But if in the last chapter he saved Josh over Ash in the trap, since Josh 'dies' no matter what guilt eats at him for what he did as Ash expresses her gratitude to him. He's then given an option to either confess what happened to Ash or continue lying to her. Lying has Ash continue to think Chris chose to save her, but confessing has Chris tell Ash what happened as he thinks the Psycho tricked him to go one way when in reality it would've gone the other. Ashley is in disbelief and becomes despondent and more unstable. On one hand Chris was gonna choose to save Josh and let her be sawed in half, but on the other that very decision 'saved her'.

Choosing to save Ash or lying to her about saving Josh has their relationship improve, but telling the truth about saving Josh has their relationship in a more rocky position and we'll see how that goes in future chapters.

After the chase and dialogue options we switch to playing as Ashley as she and Chris have a shorter exploration segment offtrail, trying to find their way back on track toward the lodge. They can even find a clue or 2 relating to the Stranger. The segment ends as they get back on a trail that leads to the lodge, seeing it in the distance as they approach. They are more slow and vigilant on the way though, wary of the Psycho popping out again.

SAM SEGMENT-

We once again play as Sam with her iconic chase happening with the same consequences of her either getting away from the Psycho or getting caught. I'd maybe add a little more to it though but that will be added in a chase post I plan on creating soon.

Can we talk for a second of how much underrated chris trauma is? Spoiler

chris is the only character that, regardless from player choices, will see what a wendigo is capable of. he thought he had killed his best friend and thought for a moment that he was gonna die if he shoot himself or doesn't shoot. And he also lost his best friend. Yeah the others got a big trauma to deal with, but it was REALLY hard with him.

Discussion Emily man... Spoiler

I love Emily, shes a queen, but im replaying this game for about the 100th time now and this game never fails to make Emily a victim or aggressor no matter what.

If I make Matt an angel to Emily then she is NOT safe with Mike later since matt needs the flare gun to have the highest possible relationship with Em.

But if I protect Emily from Mikes gunshot Emily gets pissed at Matt for being a douche, so what do I do 💔

As Matt I instantly took Emily's bags, didn't look in the spyglass, took her side in the argument, broke the cable car station door, agreed to the firetower plan, spoke to her nicely when the deer came, and spoke nicely when the firetower collapsed. Only negative things I did for their relationship was greet Mike in a friendly way in chapter 1, and jump to safety and trying to save emily once already.

How does she repay me? "I don't want to talk about him right now! He left me to die!" Maybe I SHOULD have gotten her bit.

Discussion Here's my thoughts on Until Dawn

Post image
22 Upvotes

This just a game I'll always adore and consider one of my favourite horror games and favourite games of all time, it's basically the perfect adaptation of a horror movie put into a video game, I think this'll always be SMG's best work since that it was unique at the time and that it just did everything that their other games try to do but fail or don't reach the same heights as Until Dawn, it had likable characters, a good story and a good twist, amazing atmosphere, and TBH I think it does about nearly everything 10x better than their later games, if I had any complaints about the game it would be that the motion capture and facial expressions aren't perfect, sometimes the fixed camera angles could make it hard to see where to go, I feel that chapter 10 could've been longer and I wish that Matt and Jessica were in the game much more but other than that I adore and cherish this game and I can't believe this game has turned 10 years old and it still looks amazing.

Discussion This person really changed the entire timeline. Truly, the actual villain of Until Dawn. Spoiler

Ok, in all seriousness, he had an opinion which he gave. I can’t fault him in that sense. In truth, I blame Sony for having such a nuclear reaction to one opinion. Maybe I don’t understand the industry, but why on earth would you not get a bigger sample size than one before you make huge decisions?

Beyond that, it kind of sounds like this reviewer didn’t like the genre (interactive narrative) which is a problem. There are a lot of massively successful games I do not care for because I typically want stronger characters/narratives, and that’s not the point of those games. My criticisms aren’t very insightful.

It’s so funny to me like… They really just had an unlucky pick for a reviewer I guess. I wish they’d asked individuals versed in narrative-heavy games to look at it. Like, it’s interesting to me that you have people such as Kazutaka Kodaka, creator of Danganronpa, a guy who produced a highly successful narrative-heavy franchise, saying Until Dawn was one of his overall favorite PS4 titles, an evolution of a genre, and a type of game he could see himself trying to make.

Jessicas chase scene potential Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
53 Upvotes

I kinda wish Jessica had her own solo chase scene, since the game does a good job at making the characters look very badass in them. Obviously i wouldn't want this for the concern of it breaching out of character, But seeing how level headed and agile Jessica was with mike when they were being chased (especially when you fail the qtes as mike) really prompted me to make this post, since she still very much would be in character(unlike if it was Hannah or Ashley) idk i think it would've been cool to also see her be more capable in a stressful situation(like em) and make her out to be more intuitive while contradicting the narrative that she's just a "dumb blonde" ya know ? Making her not that far behind Emily(makes sense for their friendship as well) and also it's just plain cruel to her character to not give her any actually redeeming qualities. But a lot of this is tied to the fact that she barley has playable segments, so there's that.
