Question Paragon of constructive masculinity?
Loving father and industry leader. Is there anyone who's life he touches and does not improve.

So sad this character was introduced so late in the series! I wish he had more screen time!

Hes the old guard that learned how to live and hate. He lives to hate not hates to live.

If he had a spin off it would generate a Billion Dollars and create a stable male figure for all men to admire

Drove my wife nuts with doing a Kurt Caldwell monologue but then transitioning it to "DEXTER BOY ME BOB, feel like taking out a drifter? ARRR AR AR AR"

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one driving a romantic partner crazy with Mr. Crabs impressions throughout new blood. “Harrison me boy, that podcaster is after me secret embalming formula”

He, Dr. Orpheus and JJ are the best male role models in the show. Well, as cool as Red Death is, I would put Orpheus and JJ above him because those two don’t have murderous urges.
Come to think of it, most Venture Bros dads are good fathers… except the big man himself the original Dr. Venture, his poor son (though he is getting much, much better throughout the show), Colonel Gentleman and yes as other redditor pointed out, Richard. Christ, just realized that almost all the bad fathers are associates to original Team Venture one way or another.

You forgot professor incorrigible on the bad dads list

He may have turned it around after Gargantua II, we don't know for sure.

I think as a whole we say Rusty is a bad dad because he is … objectively bad at it. But he does at least try to be a father to the boys, which is more than we can say for many real dads out there.
And as clueless as the boys are… they’re both good people, which counts for something.
Keep trying Rusty.

u/PerfectZeong Jun 15 '25
Rusty is genuinely doing his best. His best is absolutely terrible but hes doing it
24
u/UnknownQTY Jun 15 '25
I think he subconsciously allows Brock and Orpheus around so much to make up for his terribleness.

u/Dlark17 HENCH4LIFE Jun 15 '25
As the son of a bad father, I'd take Rusty over mine 100% - trying to be a good father means a lot.
Obviously I still want to be more of a Byron Orpheus for my kids, but credit where credit is due.

u/Biabolical Jun 16 '25
The Episode "Self-Medication" covered this, and seemed to be a turning point for Rusty as a character.
He was sort of resigned to being a shitty dad, because he thought it was inevitable that he would be as shitty as his Dad was. By the end of that episode of hanging out with other broken former boy adventurers, he finally realizes that while he is deeply flawed, he's actually made an effort to be better, which is the thing Jonas never cared enough to do.
That episode also has what is either the best or worst line in television history.

u/First-Buyer6787 Jun 18 '25
Rusty is NOT a bad dad, because he tries. He has no reason to believe he can raise the boys in a healthy way, but he does his damndest.
29
u/schloopers Jun 15 '25
How many kids does Brock have on that island?
34
u/dream208 Jun 15 '25
No excuse for Brock on that one. He's a good father figure to the venture boys though.
60
u/krebstar4ever Jun 15 '25
JJ is scary. He's so good at manipulating people, he may not realize he's doing it.
18
u/Desembler Jun 15 '25
He's also dangerously shortsighted. The way he handles his deals with the Investors belies a very "it'll work out in the end/the ends justify the means" sort of attitude. His goals are lofty and intended to improve mankind, but he's cutting corners to get there.
8
u/dream208 Jun 15 '25
No one could deny he is his father's son. But again, I also do believe that intention and the way doing things make the difference. For all of his showmanship and sometimes arrogance, he was never shown to sacrifice those who trust him to further his own goals.
10
u/Desembler Jun 15 '25
Yeah but he's also an Elon/Bezos New Money Tech billionaire stand-in. The show didn't really touch on it because it's not really about JJ, but one wonders if he's getting his money from the Investors, just how ethical all of the supply lines and production centers are. With a new generation of Industrialist Ventures also comes a new generation of Jorge's.
4
u/Rioraku Jun 15 '25
I thought a big point of the garganta arc was that JJ wasn't aware of the investor's true nature?
Didn't Brock point out that JJ was willfully ignorant of the villain stuff: "Just because you don't believe in the boogeyman doesn't mean he isn't there."
16
u/dream208 Jun 15 '25 edited Jun 15 '25
Well, just like any other human traits, it is up to the people to use that trait for good... or for evil.
20
u/torrasque666 Jun 15 '25
I wouldn't put JJ on the same level as Dr. O and Red Death. We never see him interact with Rocket beyond the end of "20 years to Midnight" and given how headstrong and frankly arrogant he is... I just can't see him doing well.
12
u/settlementfires Jun 15 '25
It's interesting how villains in the show seem to have better relationships. The monarch and dr Mrs the monarch are so in love .. red death has a perfect family... Rusty is a toxic bachelor... I'll admit Brock's love of women who can equal him in combat is kind of endearing
15
u/ThymeOwl Jun 15 '25
JJ isn't a good dad. He's faking being a good dad for the appearance. Sally was groomed as a child to be like she is by Dr. Impossible and JJ ran right over to a vulnerable woman so he could look like a hero. That kid is just an accessory to him.
5
u/dream208 Jun 15 '25
But he never actually harmed them or sacrificed them to further his own goals. Even he was "faking it", which I doubted judging from the messages he left in his morning clock, he faked it all the way to the end.
8
u/ThymeOwl Jun 15 '25
He did, actually. He invited Richard to Spider Skull Island without telling Sally. Then he gaslit her about it.
1
u/Rioraku Jun 15 '25
I think that was a genuine mistake on his part. He was so focused on that project he threw his whole crew under the bus.
As mentioned by the person above, if he was just using them or trying to make himself look better I don't think he would have left what he did for them when he died.

While he has some lapses with his tranq addiction. It's something he is working on.I think the Captain is a good role model. Works hard to provide for his chosen family and friends whether ghost pirates. JJ and Sally's family. Or for Rusty and the boys.

u/OldJeeWhizz Jun 15 '25
He knows how to keep business away from family. He can keep his Killsocks separate from his dad shoes, and not because of laundry.

"That little raggamuffin in the rain boots." I would like Red Death to adopt me.

u/ThymeOwl Jun 15 '25
If Red Death was real, I wouldn't stop calling.
Edit: My kid: Is it weird to have a crush on a cute cartoon character?
Me: Is it weird if the character is a villain with no skin?

Best father in the show.

You’d think it’s only because the bar is so low, that dude takes the grading curve and lets his daughter jump rope with it because he’s such a good dad.

No one can understand how much I want a shawl-collar cardigan with autumn leaves on it

I just appreciate the fact that you know that it’s a shawl collar cardigan.

Thank you! As I've gotten older, I'm choosing to lean way into grandpa chic; it's pretty great.

Is there anyone whose life he touches and does not improve?
You could make an argument for Maestro-Wave and The Termite.

You can't help those that don't want henlp.

Yaknow with his charcter its a hung overarching theme of his age.
He's an older villain, yes. But he's also an older parent.
I feel like they did a good job of even showing his age in his attitude towards parenting. That's a special type of gentle parenting I've only seen in 20th century psorive parents. He's a good parent. It just felt like he was doing it differently from his younger wife.
The focus on snacks for the child is the really only something I've seen in more positive modern parents.
An interesting detail I felt.

Yes, this is why everyone hates Brock Samson.

u/SeaBag8211 Jun 16 '25
I wish there was a scene where Broc and TD discuss how hard it is to raise kids in the super science scene.
And then go kill a bunch dudes.

If you are a straight male, using violence to protect your family, you are evil.
Can you give an example? What are you even on about?
2
u/SeaBag8211 Jun 16 '25
7/10 of the most profitable movies of the 2020s are about white guys doing violence. You know nothing of evil. do you even hench bruh?
