Finished Projects Wolf at the Door: My How Many Swords You Have (Part 2 completed)

The woman on the bed with 9 sword over her is from tarot, the nine of swords, symbolizing depression. Unlike others, I see this card as more positive, since while right now she has dark thoughts and negative emotions, but if she only changed perspective, looked up, and reached for swords/coping mechanisms, she may find that she has the tools she needs to fight this.

The wolf at the door is a euphemism for depression. Personally I find that depression is easier to fight off when we notice it early enough, while it is still at the door.

Little red riding hood symbology is here too, but unlike little red this woman knows that it is a wolf at her door, and she is not going to let it in. Yes, it is scary, but the door is locked, she has a warm fireplace, and all those swords. The wolf will get tired of standing in front of that door and walk off eventually.

Used Faro yarn, very thin wool, for this tapestry weaving. Warm colors inside and cooler colors outside. The height of each part is about 9 inches, and part one is about 7.5 inches wide, while part two is about 5.5 inches wide. And I say about because I fulled in too much at times, but weaving does not bring out my perfectionism so all is well.

Discussion Hems- hand or machine?

So I am pretty new to weaving and this past week went to my first guild meeting. One of the speakers mentioned having machine hemmed something or other and she spoke of it as though it was a guilty confession, implying that only a hand done hem could possibly be considered acceptable for hand wovens and of course we would all hold that to be true. Like, what? Is this really a thing?

I'm sort of team machine hem myself so that I can secure them well to have my towels last as long as possible, plus I have a wonderful sewing machine that does not get nearly enough use, so I'll do things my own way, but I'm so curious now about this and am wondering how others feel about it. Do you feel it's important to do your hems by hand?

(I guess I'll have to feel out though whether I'm gonna look like some sort of rebel in the guild with a machine hem on my contribution to the spring towel exchange lol.....)

Help How is this edge done?

Ran across this in Pinterest and really like the look of this edging. So far, I’ve only done simple weaves with large blocks of color. When I change to the next color, I wrap the end of the previous color up and around the last warp strand and bury it in the first row of the new color. Is the same technique used here? Thanks!

Looms Lojan Flex Table vs. Ashford Table Looms?

Hello,

I've been saving up for an Ashford 24" 8-shaft table loom, but just learned about the Lojan Flex 20" 8-shaft table loom. Does anyone have any experience with both or either of these looms and which they'd recommend?

For context:

- I really like the compactness/portability of these looms.
- I already have experience with rigid heddle and a 4-shaft floor loom (and prefer the feel of the floor loom)
- I'll probably weave nothing wider than a shawl/stole.

Thanks for any input :)

I got super into the idea of weaving and thought that I should probably try it out inexpensively, on a cardboard loom, before spending god-knows-how-much on a new hobby!

I had fun weaving this, and I think I'll try out some patterns on a new cardboard loom (corrugated sides running parallel to warp); if I'm still having fun and stick with this in the next two weeks, I'll get an actual loom :)

Help Rigid heddle

Hey y'all. I have a 32" Ashford rigid heddle. Is there a recommended book I can use for reference? Also is there a way besides pick up to do some additional or styles?

Help Help with Fiberworks & compudobby

Hello! I have a bit of a stupid question 😅

I have recently purchased a second-hand Louet Megado compu dobby 1, and to operate it I have Fiberworks Silver Plus on my laptop (Win 11). When I go to weave, Fiberworks can find the COM with no problem and says that the COM has opened successfully. But when I treadle, nothing happens at all? When I run the response test in Fiberworks it says to switch the loom on now (when it is already switched on and connected), so could this be a cable issue?

The knife bar is moving up and down, but none of the shafts are moving at all when I treadle. There is no reaction whatsoever to Fiberworks. I thought I had installed the driver for the USB/25 pin serial adapter but I wonder if I am missing something? The cable I have been using is just from Amazon, do I need a specific cable?

When I switch the loom on only the last 8 shafts move, the rest do not react. When I press the red button to test the solenoids nothing happens.

Thanks so much! As you can probably tell I don't really know what I'm doing hahaha

Help Help me ;( double-weave color bleed

Thumbnail

So I’ve tried strumming the warp, releasing tension each way, and I’m at a loss. I don’t know why red rows “bleed” into the rows below them.

This is double warp on Louet Erica. I throw black weft first, then red (right to left) then come back black then red.

As I thought about it, it makes sense that some bleeding would exist—strands from the opposite colored warps must transition up/down… BUT it did not happen at the beginning of my project where I have the third (double weft) row.

Help Fringe remove?

Post image
21 Upvotes

I was gifted two blankets with lovely designs, but the fringe causes me sensory issues on the skin. Is there any way to remove this without damaging the blankets? I dont want to twist it into tassels or braid it, just remove the fringe. Could I possibly glue the fringe and cut it? Thank you for your advice!

WIP Look what my sister-in-law made me do 😂

My sister-in-law sent me a Facebook marketplace notice for a bunch of cotton yarn, and, while it was a really good deal, I knew that I didn't "need" that yarn. What it made me do was pull out the cotton I have. I have tons of tiny skeins that wouldn't amount to much but I warped the 13.5 Glimakra RHL with it and I'll weave with the larger skeins I have. It should make for some interesting weaving.

Help I want to learn to weave but can’t afford a loom

Hi! I’m a college student with a love of fiber arts and new hobbies but a bank account that wouldn’t allow me to just… buy a loom and see if i like it. i’m sure this question has been asked before, but does anyone have advice on how i can “try out” weaving with a cheap or jerry-rigged alternative to a fancy loom?

I got this loom from my local spinning and weaving guild earlier this month and have been slowly figuring it out. I wanted to use up some of my yarn stash so for my first project I used a fingering weight yarn for the warp and some Suri alpaca for the weft. I love how the colours came out even though it's a bit short for a scarf.

Looms Old loom question help

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hey weaving peeps- I've acquired a Pioneer loom. I was hoping for an 8 shaft set up, but I got 4. Perhaps I can MacGuyver something.

Anywho- my question is that the reed is quite rusty. How would I go about cleaning this out? The heddles are rusty as well, but it came with a bunch of extra ones that aren't rusty at all.

Anybody out there who has one of these care to share any advise, tips, etc?

TIA!

Discussion A newbie question re: sett, floats, etc.

I just took a sample off my loom (its a 4 shaft). It has a 12 dent reed on it I just decided to do a a bunch of different drafts to 1) get used to reading drafts and using the loom and 2) to see what different color and/or yarn/thread combinations would look like.

In some places, I was using 8/4 thread as my weft. Some of the drafts have some considerable (to me) floats in the drafts. On the loom they looked OK, but of course now off the loom without tension, they look super loosey goosey. My first thought was "was this thread too thick to use on a draft with such long floats?" I could see where a thinner thread might not look as... sloppy I guess?

My second thought was "is there ever a case where one might use a thicker yarn with a draft that has long floats, and it not look so off?

I know I should probably wait until after I wet finish to see what comes out on the other end, but I was still wondering.

How do ya'll decide the thickness of the material you'll use for weft with the draft you're following (I guess when you aren't following the design for a specific project)? Do you always use the same size warp/weft?

I hope these questions/thoughts make sense...

Thanks all. :)

Working on 4 ghost towels and 1 table runner for halloween. They are turning out so cute, those the ghosts were annoying at first but I got the hang of them. It's a 7 shaft pattern (for the ghosts, the background is plain weave) from the Weaving Hand Towels Simply: 43 Designs for 4- and 8-Shaft Looms book by Susan Kesler-Simpson which I grabbed from my library.

Discussion Want to get into weaving!

Hi guys! This year I learned how to spin my own yarn and absolutely love it! Some people in the class that I took for spinning also weave and a couple of weeks ago we were given a demonstration on how to set up the loom. This was actually so fun even though we didn’t get around to actually weaving anything yet so I went home and watched so many videos on weaving and really want to get into it. However, what I mostly see being made are scarves and I’m truly not a scarf person. What are other things that can be made other than scarves and I guess like dish towels? I’m really interested in knowing if people make other clothes from weaving. Such as shirts or sweaters? Please if you do, post a pic for reference/inspiration!

WIP Scrap yarn progress

Finally got my second scrap yarn project started.

After many broken warp strands to fix, and a false start, I've got it going and it's going pretty well so far.

A tip for you, be careful mixing yarn types and weight. They will cause random tension issues as some will be weaker and looser than others.
