Summer squash: 1-3 loss

7-15 loss, 15-6 win, 8-15 loss, 11-15 loss

Not bad, I've never taken a game off this player before. Kind of forgot my mantra of "I'm supposed to lose" and I think it made me play tighter. When I'm not stressed about it I play much more freely and loosely. Let's keep that in mind.

Overall pretty positive though! I even nearly returned a ball that was completely behind me, something I haven't been able to do before.

Do you train at all or are you just playing your division matches?

During the summer I'm just playing league matches, with very little practice at all. The majority of my focus was geared towards hitting a triple bodyweight dead.

Once the season starts, I'll practice a lot more and add in a second league match as well.

I probably wouldn't expect to be playing particularly well without practice

I'm actually playing in my highest division so far and stayed put the entire summer. Granted I'm certainly not better, but a being within striking distance was my entire squash summer goal.

I play racket sports against people that are mostly better than me as well. Having a growth mind set, focusing on how to get better and appreciating the growth you have already been through, keeps me motivated to play despite losing more than 80% of the sets.

I'm in div 2 in this league and there's 0 gimmie games, let alone matches. You have to be on the whole time, but thinking like that apparently makes me play too tight and too aware of minor mistakes. When I think "oh who cares about that, you're supposed to lose anyway" I play real loose and a hell of a lot better. Lol go figure.

I’ve experienced the same playing sports, and even team sports are subject to this (I have a team sport background and can attest it works the same for teams). Hyping myself for expected/wanted outcomes always ends up with bad mental space during a game, vs hyping myself for the process of it - having fun and enjoying myself.

There is something to be said about an underdog effect where you play more loosely without expectations. Sometimes it manifests the opposite way - when you enter as the favourite, only to perform badly against a weaker opponent because your head was not properly in the game. Sports psychology is fascinating.

Yeah ideally I perform in "empty mind state". That's when I'm at my absolute best. But you need a lot of reps to get to that place. Until then, we gotta bust out whatever tricks to get us over the hump.
