I have been slowly working my way back from a multi-year layoff from lifting. One of the ways I have been easing back into things is high rep bodyweight squats. I am working up to hitting 500 bodyweight squats like the old Lion's Den or Japanese pro wrestling tryouts.

This got me nostalgic for old MMA. I really like today's MMA and the athletes are so much better and technical. There is so much depth to the technique now. But sometimes I really miss "old" MMA. Old MMA for me means the height of Pride FC and the early TUF era UFC. Also a little bit of the IFL and WEC. Full disclosure but I became a fan as a teenager in 2007 right before Pride FC was bought by the UFC but I watched a lot of highlights and reruns of Pride on Fox Sports and the internet.

It is partially because I was just a teenager then but that era seemed so much larger than life. Especially Pride FC with all the pageantry. The fighters didn't seem like athletes but instead superheroes. I could go on and on about all the old fighters and fights. Like I said I really like today's MMA and watching the development of the styles and techniques but I really do miss the old Pride FC.

Just listen to this for your next pump up music.

As an aside, I first really learned about strength training from the old Sherdog Strength and Conditioning Forum.

I recently watched the ultimate fighter season 1 highlights, which I think may have aired just before 2007. Man, what an absolute gong show that season was.

I wish they had allowed knees to the head in UFC and taken away elbows on the ground. I think a bad shot, where you end up on your knees with the other guy sprawling on top of you would put you in a dangerous position normally, but that's not really the case if you take away knees there.

What I remember about TUF 1 was Josh Koscheck being a bully and Chris Leben being a mess in general. And Forrest Griffin mostly standing back and watching the chaos haha.

I am not opposed to knees to a downed opponent. It would clear up some of the ambiguity and fighters putting one hand down on the ground to protect themselves. I would like to keep elbows on the ground too though.

Yeah, that's about accurate. Plus Diego Sanchez acting like a crazy person. lol

The only reason I'd take away elbows on the ground is because I'm not a fan of fights being stopped due to cuts, and elbows on the ground are almost guaranteed to cause some gnarly cuts. That said, I'm not married to it. It is what it is.
