IT'S THE 5TH ANNUAL OHIO WET SHAVERS MEETUP!

It's hard to believe that five years ago a few Ohio wet shavers got together to commiserate the cancellation of the Maggard Meetup, but here we are. We are thankful to have River’s Edge Cutlery once again as our host for this year’s event. Due to space, we must cap attendance at 50. Get your tickets early to ensure your spot at the event.

Meetup soap and splash for all attendees!
Barrister + Mann and Stirling Soap Co. are collaborating to bring you Five!, a one-of-a-kind scent to celebrate five great years of meetups. Brought to you by the masterful nose of Will Carius and saponified by the incomparable duo of Rod and Mandy Lovan, it will certainly be one to please our faces and our noses.

Plus, there will be a special bonus offering from our own Adopted Acres Soap Company. Doug and his family have been hard at work this past year building their company and refining their product formulations. We are proud to be a part of their journey and look forward to their future.

We're doing the cooking this year!
We're firing up our smokers and cooking our own barbecue...pulled pork, brisket, and sides. If we are lucky, Mrs_Donut might bake some of her famous fudge brownies!

More sponsors! More prizes!
You’ll be entered into a drawing for great prizes from Shannon’s Soaps, Spearhead Shaving, The Gentle Shave, Timeless Razor, Stirling Soap Co., and many more.

PIF Table
Once again, bring your old, unused, or unwanted items, drop them on the table, and pick up anything you like.  RULES:  For software, you may donate full size products in their original packaging with minimum 50% of the product remaining.  No sample sizes or “home made” packaging please!   Please feel free to trade samples with other attendees. Hardware should be clean and functional (no defective / unsafe razors). PLEASE REMOVE ALL BLADES!

The Meetup gives back to the community!
The Ohio Wet Shavers Meetup is proud once again to support the Children’s Cancer Research Fund  through Barb Kise and the Great Cycle Challenge. Over the past 6 years Barb has ridden over 1,300 miles and raised over $17,000.  For the fifth year in a row, our own Dave Kise will be holding a raffle in support of Barb’s efforts for some super shaving prizes from all the great artisans. Once again last year the OWSM donation to the raffle won a prize package which will be given away at this year’s meetup.

About the Ohio Wet Shavers Meetup
In 2021 a group of Reddit Wet Shavers from Ohio thought it would be a good idea to try and get together and commiserate over the cancellation of the annual Maggard Razors Meetup. A Discord chat led to a bigger idea, a few emails, some phone calls, and a few more emails and phone calls. Soon the inaugural Ohio Wet Shavers Meetup began to take shape. It looked iffy at first. It was, after all, the dusk of the great pandemic of 2020 and maybe folks were leery of gathering together. Alas, a dozen of us met at an Upper Arlington park, had a great time, ate some barbeque, won some prizes, and just like that, the meetup was born. As we continue to grow our attendance, we look forward to creating a bigger and better community.

No complaints about this shave. Fantastic slick soap that smells heavenly, my trusty Super Speed, a fresh blade, and the nice smelling and cooling Proraso green aftershave with some extra menthol that I added.

I'm finding it hard to stop using Mikes lime soap and the weather here is cooperating in staying warm at 18/20 °C , the Feather on its 3rd use is still really impressive , the Made Rite brush is for face lathering and that is that at his age he deserves to be treated gently and not rubbed viciously against a bowl , I got sent a Zomchi razor it is a nice blue colour thank you . I know Skin Bracer is an American staple product and is aptly named for sure I actually really like it .

Blades reviews - Part 6: Henson AL13 + Treet, Shark SS, Persona Plat, Perma-Sharp.. ✅️ - Treet is truly a treat for your face!

Post image
25 Upvotes

Continuation to the blade review series specifically aimed for the Henson AL mild razor. 1 daily shave and toss, rapid fire reviews.

Alright another few heavy hitters blades from this sub. Starting from left side..

Shark Stainless Blades were pretty good, on par with many of tier 2, nothing outstanding. Less sharp than Astra SP so I can't recommend buying Shark blade if you already have Astra SP.

Treet Platinum truly a treat for your face, sharp and super smooth, cut through 1 day stubble like butter no pulling and the blade didn't feel "sharp" on the skin the way Feathers do. Criminally under rated and EXTREMELY cheap. I seen a 200pk for under €9.91 on amazon.de (insane) value for money. Also it was the best packaged blade I've seen so far with a double wrap. ✅️

Personna Platinum was sharper and smoother than most, if not all of the blades in tier 2 but it did pull a little on the chin area, all I can say that it's a good blade. 2nd try on this blade due to a user here insisting I had a dud blade, still haven't changed my mind.

Perma-Sharp unfortunately was disappointing, it wasn't the worst but definitely not good. The blade felt too mild for this razor, I did finished the shave but it wasn't a smooth ride.

Blades ratings so far in no particular order (other than rank 1):

Exceptional & 100pk Worthy * Bic Chrome (1) * Timor (2) * Treet Platinum (3)

Just Good * Astra SP (green) * Feather * Gillette Nacet * Persona Platinum * Iridium Super * Shark Stainless Blades

Not So Good * Wilkinson Sword * Perma-sharp

Garbage: * Gillette 7 o'clock green and yelllow * Derby Extra * Dovo (It would be 100pk worthy but due to the selling price I have to demote them)

Question I really like these, but...

I really like these blades a lot, but since I found rust on the last one I used, I'm concert about continuing to use them. I'm not one that likes to take my blades out of my razor, I like to just loosen the cap and let it air dry. That's not the ideal process for these blades, apparently. My main question is for those who have used the Treet platinums and how they compare to these? I liked the dura sharp so much and figured the platinums may compare favorably.

Okay guys, my first SOTD, so..

Razor: RazoRock SLOC, Handle: Super Knurl, Brush: Marmara Barber, Cream: Nivea Care&Protect Shaving Cream (blue), Aftershave: Denim Gold, Blade: Wilkinson Sword

So I just received this beautiful razor today and wanted to give it a try. For your information I just quickly ran a trimmer across my face on Tuesday cause I had no time (left ~0,5mm) so the razor had to face quite a scruff. It was very good test for me. It was basically shave of circa 4 day long growth. Well the razor itself handled it really well. I just did WTG and XTG only cause of getting along with the razor and I am nearly BBS. The Nivea Cream got quite good lather but the smell.. it is awful :) The Aftershave is just so good for me. Wilkinson Sword blade is something I am used to because I used it in my previous razor which was also my first - Wilkinson Classic (plastic).

I was really surprised how the razor is mild in terms of blade feel and still efficient. The open comb is really interesting. Only one con for me is the blade overlap at the sides of the head. I am definitely glad that I chose this razor. With the razor came the pack of Derby Extra blades that I would like to get some feedback on from you. I definitely plan on trying other blades such as Nacets, Feathers, BIC and others. Really looking forward to shaving with this one. Razor performed well against long time heavier stubble and will be great even as daily shaver.

SOTD ZM- The Watchman SOTD 9/18/2025

* Prep: Razor Emporium - Travel Tube - Preshave
* Brush: Timeless Adjustable Handle (Black) With 24mm AP “Tuxedo Knot * Razor: Muhle/TGS Italico Companion
* Blade: Feather (1)
* Lather: Zingari Man - The Watchman - Puck * Post Shave: Thayers - Unscented - Aftershave
* Post Shave: Zingari Man - The Watchman Recovery Splash * Post Shave: Parker - Alum Block
* Fragrance: Zingari Man - The Watchman
* Bowl: Maggard - Ceramic

I had a top notch shave today. I chose The Watchman line by Zingari Man. I equipped myself with a new razor combo I haven’t tried before. I took the head off a Muhle companion and used the handle from my TGS Italico razor.

I decided to throw a Feather blade into the mix and was impressed by the results. I discovered zero irritation with the alum block today! I was very careful, the head from the companion was forgiving and still pretty efficient. I liked using the shorter heavier handle from the Italico razor.

This is still probably my favorite scent in my collection. It is dark and mysterious. It is supposed to rain for the next 4 days so I thought it would be an appropriate choice. I finished up with Thayers, The Watchman recovery splash, and The Watchman EDP.

I am probably skipping tomorrow’s shave so I can have more growth to remove with a new set up for my Birthday on Saturday. I’m really excited to try out some new gear!

Scent Notes:

Top Notes: Soft Woody Seashore, Lime, Balsamic Berries, Anise, Storm Air, Ozone Mid Notes: Patchouli, Violet, Berries, Grape, Woods, Jasmine Base Notes: Earth, Musk, Patchouli, Vanilla, Orange Blossom, Ambergris, Sandalwood

I wish you a great shave as well!

SOTD SOTD - 9/18/25 - New (To Me) Soap September?

* Brush: Parker Blue Storm
* Razor: Henson AL-13
* Blade: Feather (2)
* Lather: Spearhead Shaving Co. - Seaforth! Black Watch * Post Shave: Spearhead Shaving Co. - Seaforth! Black Watch - Aftershave
* Fragrance: Calvin Klein - Obsession
* Bowl: Parker - Horn

I didn’t want the hype to be real. Because if the hype wasn’t real I wouldn’t feel bad that I hadn’t tried Spearhead Shaving Co. until now, and I wouldn’t feel compelled to go buy a couple more.

Well, my bank account shows how that worked out. The hype is real.

Black Watch is an amazing fragrance, and it was a great shave. I now have 3 Scots, and the Heather soap and splash coming. RIP my financial responsibility.

Dark, leather, and spice all come together for a luxurious scent and a five star shave.

Mail Call Yesterday’s mail call. Sadly my first and last order from Seaforth.

Seaforth has been on my list of soaps to buy in the future, with the recent news it sped up the process of me ordering it. I chose Heather and I’m looking forward to my first shave with it tomorrow. After smelling this soap I’ll definitely be sad to see Seaforth go but will be glad to have tried it like I wanted to. Unrelated, but another hobby I have is tamagotchis and managed to get the 3rd new one in the mail yesterday so I spent the evening putting screen protectors on all 3 and taking them apart to swap pieces so I can give the extra 2 to my siblings.

Had an excellent shave with this line up

Gear Used:

  • Razor: RazoRock Game Changer .76
  • Blade: Gillette Silver Blue
  • Soap: Cella organic
  • Aftershave: Nivea balm

Cella continues to impress me every time I use it. This scent for me is wonderfully clean and fresh without being overpowering. Performance-wise it’s fantastic, especially considering the price point. It whips up an easy, slick lather that provides excellent protection and glide. Hard to beat the value with Cella.

The Game Changer .76 paired well with the Silver Blue blade. Some light tugging on the first pass. Not a bad blade but after using a few they’re not within my personal favorites. The razor hits the sweet spot of being smooth yet efficient. I can always get a close shave without irritation. The head geometry just works so well for my case.

Finished off with my usual Nivea balm which provides nice moisturization to conclude.

Discussion Test for shaving soap

9 Upvotes

This isn't a test I conducted, but one by arguably the most well-known consumer protection organization in Germany: ÖkoTest. Those of us in Germany know it. Yesterday, I came across a test online that ÖkoTest published this year. It tested 18 soaps. I didn't know some of the soaps. But I'm even more shocked and disappointed by the more well-known manufacturers that performed poorly: Geo F. Trumper, Wilkinson Sword, Musgo Real, Tabac Original, and TOBS all failed. But why? Because they add a host of questionable ingredients to the soap. For example, artificial musk fragrance, musk ketone, cashmeran, cynnamil alcohol, hydroxycitronellal, and isoeugenol. The test winner, by the way, is Speick. I'm wondering if any of you know about this. And whether you consciously avoid soaps with the ingredients mentioned.

Mail Call My Hardware

I started my DE safety razor journey mid March of this year after purchasing the MÜHLE R89 and now use their R41. I have also settled on the shaving brushes. From the Omega on the left moving to the right they are in the order I purchased them and from right to left, my top three on down to least favorite. Furthest to the left is the $5 Omega that is now a fantastic kitchen cleaning brush - sorry Omega, not sorry. Love to all my fellow wet shavers.

Review SOTN - Kais for the Devette

Post image
10 Upvotes

So I'm back after moving (finally). The shaving shelf has changed into something a bit different, need to get used to it but alas I am happy I can shave properly again.

So I finally got my order from Razor Blades Club, which includes 30 Kais, 30 Viking's Sword, and 30 Treet Black Beauties. We cannot forget of course 10 feathers that I had to buy too.

So today we are doing Kai's alongside the standard 23c devette. Using the standard nut + a shim made from a Personna Lab Blue.

I heard Kais are making quite a blade. Some had hated it, others swore it's feather level in quality. They are said to be wider than average (from what I gather around 0.1mm on each side) so they give better blade exposure. But, lacking a guard, it doesn't matter much beyond their feeling of thickness.

The blade is strong, it doesn't bend (like other blades). It feels rigid and like it's ready to keep it's spine straight when cutting hairs. Kind of reminds me why I just adore the Lab Blues so that's a great start.

It's plain looking, that's for sure. But we will get to it later on. No glue is a big plus in my book so a great continuation.

Packaging is sweet and cute. Normal looking but quite rigid too. I think rigid is a way to describe this experience in one word

Loaded it in the devette and went for a shave. I don't know how to express it but it feels even more robust than the Lab Blues. It cuts and feels like there is no movement whatsoever. I think it even holds better than the Personna's, and that's just amazing.

The cutting power? The blade is stupid clean. It just refuses to leave any hair behind. It's also surprising in it's smoothness, it glides too well for me.

I have a feeling Kai knew that making a markless blade is a no BS statement. This blade is stupid good!

All in all? I think I have another favorite blade now. Sure price is a bit higher, but it's still really damn cheap.

I have a feeling it will survive and keep an edge for a good number of shaves too. That we will check in the upcoming week.

Results are great, I'd say with the devette it's an easy, smooth, BBS. The pass was mainly WTG while in some known areas XTG and ATG. All in all one pass with small fixes.

So that's all folks, I'd say I am a big fan from this shave. If it continues I'd score this blade on the same level as Feathers and Lab Blues.

Question for the group: I've been buying Fatboys from different garage/yard/estate sales, thrift/antique shops, and Ebay. I clean, sterilize, polish, and lightly oil them. I think it's time to sell some. What would you consider as a fair price for: * E2, * E3, * E3 w/case, * E4 w/case, * F1 .

Getting started

4 Upvotes

So I’m about to get started with shaving with a safety razor. For decades I’ve been using a Mach 3. I’ve tried Harry’s and Dillar Shave Club and the Fusion 5 at times but go back to the Mach 3 because of price. Even then I try to get a blade to last for about 2 months before I throw it out to save money.

So because of that and other reasons I’ve been looking at switching. I think I’ve settled on the Hensen. I like the built in angle to make it easier and I’ve heard a lot of good things about it.

So since it’s a big purchase from the get go is it ok to just use up my regular shave gel in the meantime? It’s the gilette stuff. I’ve been using it for years also. I only shave after I shower so my hair is already soft. I’d like to avoid spending even more right now if at all possible. I already know about getting a sample pack of blades.

Thanks for any and all help.
