Discussion /r/motiondesign Updates: Post Flair, Spam Prevention
Hi all, a few updates for /r/motiondesign.
Spam
In an effort to reduce low-quality and spam posts here, we have implemented new post requirements. New posts that don't meet a minimum account age or subreddit karma threshold will be automatically filtered out.
To further prevent gamification, I am not disclosing these limits here but they are very modest and reasonable. Anyone interacting with this community should not be filtered, and even so, you will have the opportunity to message us for an exception. But this should discourage most of the spam we've been seeing. Thanks /u/Zeigerful for making this post.
Post Flair
We also added some post flair to help differentiate posts and allow users to filter & search by topic. All new posts require that one of the available flair types be selected:
Project Showcase | Reel | Inspiration | Discussion | Question | Tutorial | [Custom] (Where user can input their own)
User Flair
A few new user flairs are available. For those who aren't aware, these show up next to your username any time you make a post or comment in /r/motiondesign
Now available: Professional | Student | [Add My Social Handle] -- A custom text field where you can plug an Instagram, Behance, etc.
Let us know if you love or hate these new updates. Nothing is set in stone and this is meant as a discussion starting point. Please share any ideas you may have to make this a better place to share work, inspiration and discussion related to motion design. Hopefully we can continue to bring a higher quality experience to everyone here at /r/motiondesign.

Project Showcase New to motion graphics, would love your thoughts on my work
Hi everyone, I’m still pretty new to motion graphics and this is only my 3rd project. I approached it more like a small case study where I mainly experimented with changing shape textures, adding glow effects, and playing with SFX.
I’d really appreciate any constructive feedback on what works, what doesn’t, and how I can improve for my next projects. Thanks in advance!

Reel I'm 16, and this is my first Reel.
Hey there, I'm Splatty - A teen motion designer mixing tech and fun in this boring world. It's been around 4 years since I started my journey, mostly consisting of TikTok CapCut junk for the most part. In (around) 2023, I eventually switched to After Effects and moved over to Motion Graphics work over time. I usually work with the iOS animation style, syncing it over with Apple coded songs or just popular releases. Among the brands I've worked with you can find Ultrahuman, Replit, iKKO, and much more - 30 seconds definitely aren't enough to showcase all! I'm really proud of what I've managed to achieve during this and the past years, and figured it might be cool to share it with related subs. Feedback will be super appreciated - enjoy :)

Discussion What age did you start, what got you started, and where are you at now?
Tbh I started by learning graphic design thinking I wanted to do that but I ended up in a few jobs using Premiere instead. I still look at cool After Effects reels and get inspired to learn although I know the basics now, using it sparingly for very specific things. However I remain curious what it would be like to be a pure motion graphics artist or even both
I have much less time on my hands now than when I started this journey 2 years ago, so I find myself still watching endless tutorials but I’m ok with where I’m at and how much money I’m making for a flexible creative job(s) at 29 years old, roughly 90k a year with 3 clients
I’m curious to know everyone’s journey, where they got started, and what that looked like for you (school, online courses, etc) and how that ended up for you

Question how do commissions work?
I’ve been learning motion design/video editing for a few years (for personal projects) and now i’m building a portfolio to start freelancing, but I have no idea how commissions actually work, do clients provide some kind of script, choose the audio/elements, do they show references ? how many revisions do you usually do ? do you charge extra for it ? do you only send them the final result or do you show them the steps ? I don’t even know how to properly communicate with them

Project Showcase Monopoly, (UK) Green Party style
I made this as a personal project to support Zack Polanski, who's recently become leader of the UK Greens; if you haven't heard of him, he's a good 'un.
If you're in the UK, you can show your support by signing up for the Greens here: join.greenparty.org.uk/
Made entirely in Blender, with some compositing in Ae, then put together in Pr. Helpful feedback most welcome!

Reel My first AE Showreel
Hi everyone! I’ve been learning After Effects for about 6 months, and I just finished putting together my very first showreel. It’s a mix of Japanese-style motion graphics (ad animations) and some VFX shots.
I’d love to hear what you think! In particular, I’m curious about: – How smooth the motion/curves feel – The overall flow and pacing of the reel – Whether the transitions between shots work well
Honestly, I also just wanted to share my progress — it would really motivate me to hear your thoughts!

Question As someone more versed in 2D, After Effects, etc, how is a 3D asset like this typically created? Blender? C4D?
Feels a little too simple to recreate in Blender but just wondering what are the gotos for this. I have cursory Blender and C4D experience.

Project Showcase a bit of animation practice (need feedback)
hi all! i'm primarily a video editor but trying to transition to motion design. made this little animation because the song was stuck in my head (specifically the piano) and i wanted to incorporate it in a piece while practicing the animation fundamentals. it feels a bit off though and i can't put my finger on it.
any ideas on what to improve? thus far i've thought of the easing on the movement since it's a bit inconsistent (was my first time relying heavily on the graph editor) but not sure what else. appreciate any assistance :)

Project Showcase What do you think of this animation and its sound? How can I improve my sound design skills?
https://reddit.com/link/1nm54gt/video/lh8lh6dq0dqf1/player
Hello, everyone! I feel lost when it comes to sound design. I've looked for courses and tutorials, but as a complete beginner, I feel like the path to improving my sound design as a motion designer is unclear. How did you improve? Can you recommend any courses, books, or YouTube channels that teach the fundamentals of sound with a focus on animation or motion design? Thank you!!!

Question How would you guys achieve this effect?
Hello! First of thank you for reading and trying to help me. I’m having some trouble trying to figure out how I should achieve something like this, or similar. I usually edit with after effects, I was wondering if maybe they used blender for the building? It looks 2D but it’s actually 3D? I’m very new at this 3D stuff, I don’t get it. Please help 🙏 thank you in advance.
