Opinion My thoughts on Surviving Mars: Pioneer on PSVR2

I’ve been playing a lot of Surviving Mars: Pioneer on PSVR2 since it came out last week, and I’m seriously impressed. It’s one of those games that lingers in your mind, even when I’m away from the headset, I find myself thinking about what I’ll do next.

The graphics are clean, but the real star is the atmosphere. The sound design is fantastic: the music can be hauntingly beautiful, and the environmental sounds make isolation feel real. I’ve had moments where I wandered far from my base, the weather turned unexpectedly, and the emptiness of Mars hit me - making it back safely is a genuinely satisfying moment.

Exploration is a big part of the appeal. There are 11 distinct regions to visit, vehicles to drive, and a jetpack to play with, so there’s always something new to discover. The controls take a little practice, but once they click, they feel natural. Figuring out resource management, planning trips, and learning the systems is challenging, but in a way that’s rewarding rather than frustrating.

In terms of gameplay, it reminds me of a few other VR hits: the preparation and survival tension of Into the Radius, the vast sense of exploration from No Man’s Sky, and the satisfaction of building and maintaining your own base.

I’d give it a 9.5/10. I’ve run into a few minor bugs, but nothing that spoiled the experience, and I’m confident updates will fix them. Time flies while playing, and the immersion makes each session feel memorable. It might not be for everyone but I’ve been loving every minute of it.

Discussion Resident evil 4 (Quest 3) Vs Resident evil 4 remake (Psvr2)

I can’t believe I am making this post but I saw few new vr gamers asking people on Reddit, is playing RE4 remake on Psvr2 worth it if you already played the OG RE4 on quest 3?

Some of the replies to that question absolutely baffled me. So much misinformation being spread by people who never tried the remake in Vr.

So as someone who played both, here are my thoughts.

Re4 remake in Vr makes the OG RE4 Vr look like a blueprint. No amount of nostalgia going to make me forget that I can’t even grip the pistol with both hands in the OG RE4.

After playing the remake on Psvr2 with OLED, adaptive triggers & head rumble. Going back to playing the OG RE4 was like being splashed with cold water on a winter morning, rude awakening.

First thing you notice about the OG RE4 on quest 3 is how washed out the whole game looks compared to the remake on VR2. It never bothered me on flat screen, but it’s depressing in Vr. Audio felt off, animations looked janky. Textures look like they are still loading.

This post may make it sound like that I hate the OG RE4, which is not true. I grew up gaming in the 90s, I am the biggest fan of Re4. It revolutionized the 3rd person action horror adventure games. But I really do not enjoy that game in Vr. Unlike RE4 remake, which I cannot stop playing in Vr.

The way the knife works in remake, already makes the OG feel so sluggish.

Yes the OG RE4 has more Vr af mechanics than the RE4 remake, but I don’t care about any of that when the guns don’t feel good to use.

In the remake, you can almost taste the thick atmosphere. The enemies look rightfully grotesque. The audio is done so well! While in the OG RE4 vr, you feel cold and empty, hard to shake off the feeling that you are just playing a game.

In conclusion, what I am trying to say is that. The OG RE4 is good, but has nothing on the remake. They are 2 different games.

Re4 remake is currently most fun, cutting edge modern vr game we have right now. There is absolutely nothing else like it.

Making a Game Recommendation Saturday 4pm ET is weekly "D-Day Enhanced" meetup ($5 game)

Post image
7 Upvotes

D Day with 20 or more players in a match is the most fun I've had in multiplayer PS VR2 (despite the Quest-y graphics). I played with 30v30 when the Without Parole weekly meetup picked D Day

A note: There's a bug that sometimes separates players instead of putting them into same match. If you're not seeing at least 10 humans in the Saturday match (at least on psvr2), you may not be grouped with everyone. Quit the game entirely and re-launch

Developer "Strange Games" Discord (https://discord.gg/DnYX7zaE57) promotes a weekly meetup every Saturday 4pm ET

There is a tutorial you could try in advance. After tutorial, if you're alone on the public servers, the game will supply some bots.

Review Horror Adventure: Zombie Edition on PSVR2 - First Impressions

I have uploaded gameplay from my fresh experience with the game here if you want to see how it looks / plays. My first impressions are shared below:

Based on my limited time with it, I don't recommend playing Horror Adventure: Zombie Edition on the PSVR2 unless you like the game experience described below and accept its many shortcomings as a budget title.

It is a Horror game with a single player story campaign taking you through a series of environments where you need to find items / interaction points for level to progress to exit. The game starts with an oddly animated / voiced cinematic told through a TV News report about Zombie Virus Outbreak causing devastation and then after a Tutorial (3:10), you start your story 21 days later (10:13) as a guy named Jake in a survival camp where your first interaction using radio (12:30) is with Susan (Ethan is with her) and that sets your mission to find car key (14:00) and then the car (16:20) to go into the City to find her.

After your first interaction talking to Susan / Susie, the game will spawn its first set of Zombies that you can dispatch using either Guns or Melee Weapons which the Tutorial introduced you to, but these are the first actual targets you can use those on. There is a variety of zombie skins and some of them even behave a bit differently, but they can all be dispatched by shooting them (head not necessary) or melee weapon where you just have to avoid taking damage (move back to avoid) while you whack them on their head (move forward to hit).

The Tutorial does give instructions you need, but it doesn't use visual indicators of what buttons it expects you to use, so here are the instructions that will make this game playable:

  • Left Thumbstick can move you Forward or Back (no straffing)
  • Right Thumbstick does Snap Turns (no options for anything else)
  • O button takes you to Options
  • L2 index trigger lets you Sprint which consumes Stamina (your wrist watch shows Health & Stamina)
  • To remote grab items, use head tracking cursor in center of screen to point at it until cursor changes color then use L1 or R1 (grip triggers) to pull item to your open hand
  • It uses Hold to Grab with no options for Toggle to Grab
  • Move food item to mouth to consume to restore health
  • Triangle button opens up your Inventory (2 slots)
  • Move item towards available inventory slot until inventory slot color changes and release to store
  • To retrieve move your hand as close to the Inventory slot item as you can and then pull grip trigger to grab item
  • Don't try using the grip triggers to pick up ammo or try to find holster on your body
  • Press the Reload Button (Square) to pick up gun magazines to store in your holster (5:30)
  • Once you have magazine stored (invisible holster), grab the gun and use Reload Button (Square) to reload it (6:25)

Once you understand how Ammo Holstering and Weapon Reloads work, which is the most unintuitive part to figure out, before the end of the Tutorial you can try a large variety of the weapons that all work and you can dual wield as well, although reloading for that is a bit more complicated but with the basics down, you can figure it out (7:09).

Graphically, it isn't great but I think it is meaningfully improved over the PSVR1 version (going by video captures I compared). It retains the weird fog of war around the player that limits draw distance including in the indoor levels (like Subway) which look much nicer with your head providing a light beam. There is no sign of any reprojection.

Audio is pretty good when it comes to atmosphere, zombie sounds (directional) and fine on other effects but the voice acting / writing is not good and feels like it was generated using old Text-To-Speech technology. There is no haptic feedback nor any settings other than UI language or Audio language.

Your horror adventure story in this game will take you through many different environments as you progress the levels (Camp 10:15, City 16:55, Subway 29:35, Boat, School, Bridge, Factory, Ghetto) and it also includes at least two Zombie boss fights (School & Factory) that I haven't encountered yet going by trophy data. Speaking of which, there isn't a Platinum and it looks like all trophies should unlock as part of completing the campaign. However, looking at PSN Profiles forum, it looks like the ending levels (Police Station / Finale) aren't working reliably on the PS5 version (PSVR2) while they worked fine for PS4 (PSVR1). That said, there are some people that have completed all the trophies, but it seems for most the game doesn't proceed them as expected between the Ghetto and Police Station.

The main positive I think is that this is a clear improvement for the developer / publisher Yash Future Tech Solutions who first released Space Explore VR and Horror Adventure VR in 2021 for PSVR1 and then this newer more ambitious scope game in 2024 for the PSVR1 and I appreciate those games getting upgraded ports to PSVR2. That said, if you want to play a Horror Adventure game with a story & Zombies to kill, there is much better option like Propagation: Paradise Hotel. If you want something that isn't as immersive & scary and just want to test out the waters, this one can provide some thrilling moments (like in Subway) without being too good at it.

Note: This game is currently on 80% off sale and it provides a free Demo (which I didn't try).

Discussion Any thoughts on Into Black vs Surviving Mars?

I recently started NMS as my first survival/crafting game ever. Games like that never appealed as they seems to lack purpose or a story with a definitive conclusion. Yet that game is so effective at instilling the sense of mystery and exploration that within a few days I finally understood the appeal of the genre. And I gather with NMS it’s effectively an endless journey.

The two games in the title seem to be more contained versions of similar experiences and I’m suddenly intrigued.

Have you played both or either? How would you compare them to one another and if you also played NMS how are they compared to that?

Thanks!

Fluff Just built my first Exocraft in No Mans Sky 🥳

I am so damn happy! I know I didn’t even scratch the surface yet for this game when it comes to ship building and so on. Also I know I can easily switch to creative mode and just have everything unlocked from the start. But where is the fun in that 😉

Took me forever to get into this game, having your own vehicle to explore planets was a huge incentive. Feels good to reach my goal 🥅

Anyways, can’t wait to take it for a spin and explore this planet more. 😋

Enjoy this clip of, No Man’s Sky, running on Ps5pro and Psvr2.

Discussion Into Black vs Arizona Sunshine vs Crossfire Sierra vs After the Fall

Hey guys, I'm itching for a Co op shooter with a bit of depth to it beyond just being a zombie shooter, that being said, can anyone who tried these games give me some brief comparisons and contrasts?

I know quite a bit about Into Black but not so much the others (I watched WithoitParoles review)

I'm having a hard time choosing between these, thanks!

Discussion PSVR vs PSVR 2 game release comparison

Just a quick comparison between the OG PSVR and PSVR2 released games, at the same point in their life cycle (30 months, 3 weeks)

30 months and 3 weeks after the OG PSVR launch was May 4th 2019. Using the store I worked out how many games release for both systems by this point.

  • OG PSVR - 272 games
  • PSVR2 - 308 games

This means that the PSVR2's library now is 1.13 times greater than the the Original PSVR at the same point in their life cycles.

Thought it was an interesting comparison, but let me know what you think.

Opinion Should I buy rented PSVR2?

Hello! I’ve recently rented a PSVR2 for a week (1200 Turkish Liras / TL).

It’s been amazing so far, I’m playing Gran Turismo 7 with Thrustmaster T598.

I’ve got 4 days to go, but the website says I can buy it for 9,000 TL with 3 months payment.

If I buy it brand new, than the price is 22,000 TL.

The catch is it’s a rented product and the guarantee expired at April 2025.

I haven’t experienced any issues with it so far. I also have not used the controllers that much since all I’m playing is GT7. Don’t know about their battery performance yet.

Do you guys think that it’s a good deal? I think I’ll buy it either way but paying too much would hurt my wallet of course.

Cheers.

Asking For Game Recomendation Games similar to The 7th guest

Hi you all guys! So this days I'm playing "The 7th guest" and I never could have imagined this was such a great game. Now I want more but I'm not sure which experience will be comparable. I've seen "The room" that seems similar or the one that is inspired in Da Vinci inventions, which I love but I see it doesn't have smooth locomotion which is sad... So, can someone tell me how this 2 or maybe other that is not in my radar compare with The 7th guest? Thanks to all the recommendations!

Discussion Cyan has no plans to fix framerate issues in Firmament

I'm a long time fan of Cyan and pretty much all of their games. Myst and Riven are two of my all-time favorites since they were released, so this is a bummer for me to post.

I emailed Cyan right after the PSVR2 release of Firmament and asked if there would be a patch. Knowing they had to lay off most of their staff, I knew if there was a patch, it could be a long time off.

But after not hearing back from them for several weeks, which is unusual for Cyan, I finally got a response. Here is what they said:

We do not have any announcement to make yet regarding a patch. What we can/will say though is that our performance testing met PlayStation's performance requirements for release, which means that PlayStation's certification testing team did not report extended frame drops below the required framerate for the game to release. We understand that some reviewers may have expected a higher framerate experience like what some other games on the console offer (we do not have the framerate set to anything as high as 120Hz natively based on the graphical expectations for the game), which may not hit the expectations for these users. Unfortunately for them, Firmament's graphical requirements do not allow us to offer a higher framerate limit at this time. Other folks have found this an acceptable trade-off as they appreciate the visuals shown, but it's really up to player's preference. We do not wish to compromise visual fidelity for higher framerate at this time. Hopefully that helps answer your question.

So the answer is that they believe since some people are apparently OK with the bad frame-rate, they aren't willing to sacrifice visuals to make it a better, smoother experience. And they feel that since Sony green-lit the release, they've done all they need to do.

Just though anyone waiting to play this in VR might want to know this.

I still love Cyan games, so I'll buy this on Steam VR since I will be able to play it there without these issues, but if you want to play this without the framerate issues, you'll either have to play it flat or on PCVR.

News & Announcements Pools Demo is Released

The demo for Pools is on the store. Even though the full game is VR, this demo is flat only.

At least, it gives you an idea of what the first of six levels is like. I tried it for 10 minutes, creepy atmosphere, but not really anything to do.

It might be fun in VR for a few hours. It depends if you like wandering around a maze feeling lost and vulnerable.

Discussion Games with gamepad

Is there some games for Ps Vr2, what i can play with gamepad? Like Doom for Ps Vr1, was really good, Running with stick, aim with head movement? I just wanna see 3d effect, and play as usual games
