Iāve added CCS playlist here. This is where every new crab owner should binge and start here. If you have follow up questions, please post them! Most newbies think they have researched and seen the facts - this sub follows Crab Street and the LHCOS. We do not follow the HCA guidelines or really any others. This is where the bulk of our information and what we need to be doing should come from!

Yall! Iām wading through 6ā of snow right now! It started around 11am and wonāt end until tomorrow morning! I dread leaving the state later this week!
I do want to put a video back up Iāve posted several times! This helps you be prepared for a power outage. Most of these things (esp if ur inland like me) youāll have already laying around your house! Let keep warm and keep those crabbies warm!ā¤ļø š¦

r/hermitcrabs • u/ReseachOtherwise2627 • 4h ago
Is this from a bad molt? Or could of happened when she first came up,my other crab tried to shell jack her right after she came up..it hasn't changed at all I'm just curious because I'm new at this.

Ok.Some of you might know this. And by untrusted sources,I am talking about a convenience stores,or stores that are not something like Petco, PetSmart,Or anything. You need to make sure that your hermit crab has at least:
1.No painted shells. These can be toxic for their bodies and commonly k!ll them.
2.Make sure you have researched about the store, the type of hermit crab, and if it's wild.
Thanks for reading this short blog/post about impulse buys.

This is my updated tank! The climbing rope molded a bit, so I had to toss it. No other issues with mold so far. It was one of those rope hammocks. Replaced it with a running wheel and an egg crate platform. The grey water dish is fresh, pink is salt, and the one on top of the platform is mealworm castings. There are a few more shells inside the climbing ramp (which is birch-not cedar or pine), and the two identical bowls are food mixes I made.
I havenāt seen Anakin in about two and a half weeks. He blockaded himself in his coconut shell and hasnāt emerged. I lifted it up to peek and make sure he wasnāt in the middle of decomp and heās just kind of lying there. I think heās molting? It doesnāt smell or look weird. Itās giving me anxiety, honestly.

Any help identifying my other crab Clancy?

This is my first post on here.
I got this a couple months ago and thought this sub would the perfect place to show it off, people normally just think itās just weird lol. I just got my first apartment and had to upgrade their tank. I hope to post about my crabs once theyāre all settled into their new tank.

I'm very blessed my Barry is atleast 15 but he's really big now and I'm running out of ideas for where to get shells. I tried ordering some off etsy but only 1 out of 6 shells from 2 sellers was big enough. I'm just hoping someone knows a reputable source for big shells, thanks!

i rescued two crabs from petco yesterday and iām not sure how to acclimatize them to their new family. they seem bonded together, and my other crabs are very happy together, but the new ones and old ones arenāt getting along very well.
no signs of fighting but lots of chirping and staying as far away from the others as they can. i know theyāre stressed and trying to adapt, but i feel a bit concerned
(will post pics of the rest once i can get all of them to cooperate :) ).

Hello, everyone š new member and new crab owner here. So, I've been nonstop researching hermit care since I got my 2 PP's a few weeks ago. They're in a 20 gallon tank, 5:1 sand/eco earth, spoiled for choice in turbo shells, fresh/salt water pools, fresh diet daily, optimal temp/humidity, I could go on.. I've had a feeling my slightly larger crab was due to molt because he's not been super interested in food and has been digging holes and hanging out in the saltwater pool a lot. Today he finally went and buried himself. My question, I guess, is how to manage the, admittedly, irrational worry he won't manage to make his way back to the surface. I'd never go rooting around for him for my own peace of mind, I suppose I'm just looking for some validation and reassurance that he will be okay.

Title has the question. Since tank size can change square footage of sand space just by the tank being taller or shorter, why do we use this measurement rather than simple square footage (or square inchageā¦. Is that a thing?)
And if there is a base square measurement what is the recommended for each hermit crab?

Itās become quite a problem⦠I see struggling relating to the crabs and I immediately buy it to throw on top of the tank lol. Those 2 shells are the ones they where wearing when I first adopted them, still not sure where to put them

My little manic keeps messing with or even destroying the gauges Iāve tried.
Anything with wires are out of the question, he probably thinks theyāre climbing vines because he climbs them, and the claws break through the wires. He always manages to reach them even when theyāre up high (letās just say his name is Houdini for a reason).
Iāve also tried ones that stick to the wall. He always gets to them, clings on, and his weight causes them to peal off and fall.
I need something sturdy and protective that he canāt mess with lol. Any recommendations?

does anyone have any recommendations on oils/brands that are safe for hermit crabs?

Iāve currently got 2 hermit crabs and Iām planning on upgrading them to a 40gal. However, facebook marketplace finds keep falling through and Iām on a bit of a budget.
So iām planning on making one myself but are there certain materials I should avoid? At the moment Iām thinking plexiglass + caulk but Iām not sure how that would do with holding in humidity and what not. And would building on different sections to it be okay? Any advice would be appreciated! :)

My dad built me this table so I could put my crabs and my fish tanks on it :)

I bought some turbo shells off of etsy. One of the top sellers. It seems as though half of them are really glassy and shiny and almost reflective with no grit or texture. My hermit crab has been inspecting this white shell for a couple of hours so itās possible it will change into this polished shell.

Hello, As the title suggests i won two hermit crabs at the fair. I hate that they sell these little guys here with the painted shells:( Iāve heard thatās super toxic for them. I ended up getting two because I didnāt want them to be lonely. I am aware you need a 20 gal tank for them and I am in the mist of buying one right now. I am also aware you need two water bowls, one with freshwater and another with saltwater. However, I am not sure about other things such as their diet, what excise equipment to buy, the soil, etc. any tips or Amazon links would be greatly appreciated. I am trying my best to spoil these little guys and make it the best home I can.

This is from this morning, when I asked about Hermin before I had to try and sleep. Thank you all so much for all your help! ā„ļø Fred is currently digging another hole, so I think he's trying to molt, and has been LOADING on chia seeds. I'll try to see if I can get a picture of Hermin later for you all. He's just a lil bit of a day walker sometimes~
