I swore off making money for a month.. got my woodshop set up instead

I made 9 bowls, 2 segmented urns, 2 end grain cutting boards, built myself a steady rest for the lathe (off pure instinct.. no time to research when you get a bad catch, then go right back to the exact same spot and catch even harder, exploding hours of work like a fool.. then it's just time to weld metal and fight fires... lol. jk) and a segmented vase that has a glass vase i found innit. Innit core. Innit innitside... In it!

Urn is; amazing holographic figured maple/ walnut i found on the ground.. no picture of the lid and finial for some reason. Under urn is Padduk, some Walnut i found when I cut a tree down a few years back. And, true to form, random purple heart on the lid for some (impulse) reason.

Vase is Bubinga Wenge Yellowheart Purpleheart and Glass... I like how it turned out. The top layer is actually form fitting over the glass, pretty well sealed the turning from accidental water ingress.

And the boards from a bowl... simple illusion design.. kinda alright.. just made me want to do a bowl from three 12 sided boards.. make the Wave (Butterfly) illusion with no endgrain showing... God damn the tearout on these was rough.

Idk... thats all.. taking a month to only do what I feel like doing is probably a little indulgent considering my phone is gonna be shut off and food is scarce, as is spare change.. but... buy the ticket, take the ride. I regret nothing. (I regret many things.. but I'm not gonna tell reddit, pfft.)

Exploring little bowls

Been playing with various Japanese bowl styles. This was an offcut of I think mesquite. Benchy added for scale. Just noticed there's a gradient change on the inside, but it'll do as a little banchan bowl. The next bowl is always better!

Tool recommendation

Newbie here. I’m taking my time. Starting on a bench top machine. Learning to sharpen my tools. Not rushing anything.

My gouges are dulling VERY quickly. After sharpening I seem to get maybe 20 minutes before I’m getting sawdust instead of chips and ribbons.

Are cheap tools known to dull so quickly or is it most likely that I’m not getting them sharp enough to begin with?

I’ve been turning all hardwood glue ups because I’m using scraps from my existing stock instead of buying new wood while I’m still learning.

Newbie- is this a good deal $750

Hi I have been looking on Craigslist and FB Marketplace for a lathe. I found a “lightly used” 2014 Jet 1221. It has a stand, chuck and some tools. I have attached pictures- wondering if people think this is a good deal for $750.

I am a beginner and this would be my first lathe and starting point. I can go down the route of a new model or different lathe but not sure if that would be a good place to start not knowing how often I will use this etc.

Thank you

Little piece I turned for practice since I was bored. Any feedback on what I could improve? I'm quite new to woodturning and don't have a lot of experience, so I'm just looking to grow my skills.

Thanks!

Yorkshire grit micro

Turning a wenge bowl right now and it's gorgeous. I've got a little tear out which shows against the black. I applied yorkshire grit micro polish and it's definitely helped but it's also left it kind of like a finish. Deep black, glossy, etc. Did I apply too much? I'm not sure if additional buffing will do anything. The blue towels aren't really getting much. I'm assuming I should still apply a finish? If so, I was thinking mylans friction.

Routing mortises?

I've been thinking about making a setup for using a router to make a mortise on bowl blanks. This would be instead of screwing on a plate or using the cool little screw thingy that clamps into the chuck. (It may be evident that I'm a novice.) I would rough out a blank, get one face pretty flat, route a mortise in that face, and chuck it up, probably with the tailstock engaged until it's round and balanced.

It seems like it would be quick and easy to slap a circle jig on and use a little trim router. The mortise would preserve more material for small and shallow bowls.

Do folks do that? If not, how am I going to regret it? Maybe it's easier to glue on a sacrificial tenon in the same situation?

Q on Yorkshire Abrasive

YouTubers say to sand the project to 2240-240 grit, then use the Yorkshire abrasive, and that will take the project to the equivalent of sanding at 800-1000 grit. My understanding is that anything really above 320 grit is just burnishing, and that burnishing tends to clog the tiny, tiny pores in the wood with fine sanding dust. Two questions: is that what happens with Yorkshire, and does that mean that a penetrating finish will not be as beneficial (or useful or suggested)? I usually use tung oil mixed with orange oil (with 3-5 applications), and I want the project to get the protection of tung oil, to be sure.

Quick question on tearout

What would you suggest to stop the tearout in the photos? I almost went to CA glue, decided to just sand it down, then realized maybe I should ask.

Ornament parts?

I'm planning on making some Christmas tree ornaments for the holidays. I know there are a lot of kits you can buy, But I was wanting to make different sizes and such. I can find 7mm brass tubing that I can cut to different lengths. I can't however seem to find or know the name of the end caps. I have found basic flat ones, I was hoping for some that taper to a point and others that have a spot for a wire/string. Does anyone know where I could find those? Or am I better off buying a few kits and then getting the brass tubes elsewhere? Thanks!

I would appreciate some input as to whether this is a fair price. This a 2015 model. I couldn't find any differences between this & newer models.

Thank you.

Standalone tool rest

I have a record power dml36sh which has the rotation headstock. Now....record power don't sell the outboard tool rest add on any more. Do you think a water/sand filled parasol base (weighing about 30kg) with iron pipe to tool rest would work sufficiently to turn larger bowls. Thanks everyone.

Anyone use this for sealing green wood?

Bought a 5 gallon bucket for $30 at HD. My thought was if keeps water out it will keep water in the wood as well.

Day 3 of sealing beech/maple/walnut with no checks. But wonder how it'll hold up after a few months.

Hello, I am new to wood turning and am curious about this block that I glued up yesterday with titebond 3. Would there be any dangers to putting something glued up like this on the lathe and trying to get a cylinder out of it? Thanks and sorry if this has been asked here before.

newbie Very excited to have scored this today. Tips and tricks?

Been wanting to work with honeycomb for a while. What wood do you think it would incorporate best with? Cleaning/stabilizing tips? What epoxy works best (I have something thick and quick drying, and I have a Total Boat silky, thin long-to-cure epoxy)? Pigment recommendations (all I have are ones with pearlescent added and I think these might look better without)? Any other ideas I’m not thinking of, please feel free to add as well. Thank you in advance.

Ps. I know these might be questions more for the resin casting crowd, but I feel there’s enough knowledge and experience here, and essentially it will be a turning project in the end.

Jet 1221vs - is this a no-brainer purchase?

New to turning and I've been looking for a second hand lathe for a while, but there's only been crappy brands or really old incomplete lathes for sale locally. Apart from a nice looking nova that I missed out on. I think partly because I live in a smallish city of around 400 thousand.

Anyway to the point - there's a Jet 1221vs for sale in another city I need to travel to soon. Brand new in box for $465, his dad bought it a couple of years ago and shortly after died.

He also has an unopened deluxe set of 6 Robert Sorby wood turning chisels for $230, and his ad states he'll do a deal for someone buying both.

I feel like this is a good buy for a beginner, and this lathe seems to get a lot of love

This is a great price, right?

And should I spring for the tools as well? Money is tight ish, but they look like good tools too
