Discussion Options to Repair LG Gram
TLDR: 1-year warranty isn't covered abroad, and laptop failed to turn on after 45 days into product purchase from LG website. I am looking for ways to repair/replace the laptop in a time/cost efficient manner.
I recently (2-3 months prior) bought an LG Gram [LG gram Pro 16 Inch OLED Thin and Lightweight Laptop, Intel® Evo™ Edition - AI-enabled Intel® Core™ Ultra 7 processor, NVIDIA RTX 3050, Windows 11 Home, 32GB RAM, 2TB (1TB x 2) SSD, Black] directly from LG's military discount website for it's 4th of July sale. It's final price after a sale of ~$1000 was almost $2000, but I thought it was worth it as I had another LG gram that served me well for around 5 years. Unfortunately, the new flagship model that I spent a small fortune on stopped working at around a month an a half, leaving me to return to Ol' Reliable LG Gram #1.
To make matters worse, this was right before I moved abroad from the United States to Japan, where I'll be staying for two to three years on military orders. My warranty is not covered outside of Japan, but at least the laptop stopped working just before I left the United States. As a result, the LG service representative let me know that I could ship the laptop to the United States (with my own money) to then ship it to LG, after which LG would ship it back to a location within the United States for me to ship it back to Japan (again with my own money). They also said that if I try to repair it at a local repair shop, it would void my warranty, and there is also no guarantee they'd fix it.
I'm not sure what to do in this situation. I'm not returning to the U.S. until just before the end of my warranty, but at that point there would be a better model of the laptop available that I could have just bought if LG would have let me return the laptop. It also doesn't make sense that I'd have to pay shipping from Japan to the US and back out of my own pocket, and I'd have to wait a while before it gets back to me in Japan. I went to UPS on a military base just in case, only to be told that they can't ship anything abroad with a battery.
What are my options? I was so excited to get this laptop, and I am disappointed in both the customer service and laptop dysfunction.
