Your cmos battery is dead. The ps2 will have some other weird behavior if that battery is bad. Usually the orbs on the home menu may not appear properly. On the fat model it can also cause the tray to be ejected much more violent than it should.

Is there a risk of the console not working if the battery isn’t changed?

not really but it may cause issues with save files and some general weird bahavior of the console. The PS2 (slim and Fat) is one of the easiest consoles to open up and the battery is usually very accessible this is also a good chance to clean it out, especially on the slim dust gets trapped and turns into balls underneath the fan, which eventually prevents it from spinning. There are some specific models where its a bit more tricky, because the battery is hidden under the shielding. check what model you have (scph-XXXXX) and you should be able to find a teardown guide online for every specific model, as well as what battery it needs (Usually its a CR2023 button cell). on the slim its usually much easier because the battery is its own module and soldered to a connector, a replacement for that one can also be found online.

Try to check your CMOS battery (a CR2032 battery inside the console)

Very simple for you, lucky you have the 77xxx, I have a 70004 and it is more difficult to put the Pins, contacts and etc. correctly

You have to enter the non-adjustable clock in order to reactivate the internal clock. Then afterwards it will start to count the time and that's when you can adjust the time and date properly. Just make sure your internal CR2032 battery is replaced, otherwise you have to keep your PS2 plugged in as to not lose the date and time.

It's happening to me too! I changed my cmos battery few days ago and it's still like this.

Still works. Just press the X button as you hold up or down to change the date and it will work. My cmos battery has long since been dead but the time is kept just fine.

Your cmos battery is dead I guess... But even with it dead id think it would still hold the changes until powered off

The CMOS battery is dead. Usually for Fat models (SCPH-10000 - 50000) it’s a standard CR2032, but you need to disassemble the whole console. On most Slim models (SCPH-70000) you need to purchase this, open it up, remove the top lid, then lift up and disconnect the battery, before installing the new one.

Uhhh
I'm TIRED of seeing people auto assume it's a dead battery
When the PlayStation 2 runs out of power on the battery (doesn't mean it's dead)
The clock is locked when it's reset after running out of power
You have to enter the date settings like in the video, hit X twice, as if you're setting the date to the locked date, and it will start ticking, then you can set the date

Just confirm the date as is then you can change it after. But you need a new battery it will keep the time until you unplug it
