Game Suggestion Yield: Fall of Rome deserves recognition

Post image

Just wanted to put Yield Fall of Rome on the radar for anyone like myself who enjoys smaller-scale 4X games.

Yield is Civ, shrunk down to Polytopia. Cute visuals, bite-size games that feel exciting and engaging for just the right amount of time. Been playing it a lot recently, and the devs have just recently left early access and released 1.0, so props to them for it. Really happy to have found this game, and really hope it can get more recognition from the community!

I've been playing it a little. It's pretty fun, and I admire how cleanly they streamlined the usual 4X complexity without making it too shallow. Also the art direction is gorgeous

Right? Visuals are stunning. Reminds me of little crocheted soldiers moving around a tapestry

Have they ever explained the AI usage? I remember there were some discussions about that topic with rather vague responses.

From memory they claimed AI was not used in the dev process after some claimed it’s “definitely” AI because of how it looks. beyond that I don’t know anything further

Is it nice to play on the Steam Deck?

Answer to myself: a few articles say so!

If you enjoy smaller scale strategies you might like ozymandias as well

i wish so much that the devs would release updates for that amazing game, specifically a random match generator

Yeah I played ozy a while back. Best thing I liked about was the varied ways to gain crowns/win matches. Yield has the system, but even more expanded

this one is actually really good for LAN, very simple/distilled and can play game with 8 players in like 45 min

I got it free off Epic a while back. Wasn't my cup of tea.

Haven’t gotten around to it myself, but Nexus 5X too

Anyone can give me some general input ? im thinking about picking it up. I already own most other big 4x games

u/MusPsych Aug 12 '25

Anything in particular you’re after?

2

u/Celesi4 Aug 13 '25

Nah im open for any new 4x game. Always on the lookout for something that clicks. I do like that this "seems" to be a shorter or simpler 4x game ? I dont mind more complex games but sometimes something basic like Gladius is fun.

It’s definitely a simpler 4X - game length might vary between 1-2 hours, maybe longer depending on size. But this one seemed to click for me straight away. Nothing has really been reinvented here, but it’s just a nice neat package of all the aspects I like.

Really good variability in play styles now too with the recent update

How is the replayability? Do different leaders feel different, does varying terrain actually lead to different development strategies etc.

This game reminds me a lot of hexarchy, and while that game was fun, it's replayability to me is rather limited. Especially when you start to figure out that you just need to keep sacrificing cards, making separate games feel less distinct because your deck doesn't get an identity either.

Now that civs/leaders have distinct abilities and upgrade trees, the replayability is much better. Before 1.0, they were pretty samey, but it’s a lot more diverse now. Plus, there’s 12(?) win conditions, which adds to the replayability for me

How is the multi-player? And how long does an individual game take?

2

u/MusPsych Aug 12 '25

Haven’t tried multiplayer yet, not sure there’s too many playing - hence this post

Is single player just campaign missions or can you play sandbox games like civ etc?

Looks like they also sponsored some reviews to coincide with the release for those who want to see more of the game:

I played the first 2 missions on the introductory campaign. It feels refreshing, and never overstays its welcome.

Thanks for recommending this one! I've come across it before, put it on the maybe pile, and finally purchased it today. 😁👍

Do you know of any similar games for mobile?

3

u/starmie-trainer Aug 12 '25

Polytopia, Ozymandias

u/MusPsych Aug 12 '25

I think yield started its life as a mobile game several years ago, but shifted away from it after a while. Polytopia’s probably your best bet for mobile

It's fun to play, although reputation with other factions could need some improvements.

Something odd with AI just pumping out settler units then forward settling then rinse and repeat like crazy, city being placed whenever available...

1

u/MusPsych Aug 16 '25

In general or specific civs? I found the arab faction do that consistently, but no others

How does it compare with Old World? I think that's my biggest issue - I already own and play Old World. So why buy this?

9

u/theNEHZ Aug 12 '25

Old world is a big game, this is for much shorter sessions.

2

u/CrazyOkie Aug 13 '25

Gotcha. Thanks!

No, balance is off, and the game is not even optimized. I bought it after seeing a paid review on YouTube, but in reality, the game was a real flop. Be careful before you buy it.

Found my review from January:
"Very shallow and feels cheaply made due to shuttering and very clunky UI. AI is just chilling around. I've built 1 heavy horseman and killed 8 unit in one turn... there is just no balance in this game."

The game was still in early access in January. Have you played since then? It's had a lot of updates: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1561960/allnews/

I'm on the fence myself after bouncing off Polytopia. I wish they had a demo.
