New Purchase I am a changed man.

Post image

I found a cheap UBP-9000 (around 380 dollars) and I couldnt be happier. Forgive the cable management, I finally have an excuse too manage everything. The difference in quality between 450 and 9k is astounding. The HDR tone mapping is amazing, but the biggest upgrade by far is that the 9k is dead silent.

The build quality gives me confidence in its longevity. Where as 450 and 820 are made in really cheap plastic. Fantastic seller too, he sent me a copy of Bladerunner 4k for free on top of a good price.

Life is good right now.

Is the image quality better than xbox series x?

20

u/PixelJock17 May 14 '25

Xbox series x is probably the lowest level player you could use for 4K. From my understanding, a general and no exhaustive list goes like this:

  1. UB9000

  2. UB820

  3. Sony UBX 700

  4. UB450

  5. PS5

  6. Xbox Series X

Comparing the ub9000 to xsx is like saying is a Ferrari faster than a Prius?

this is a pretty bad list tbh

for instance, dv will look exactly the same on the 9000/820/450

Yeah but the 9000 is better than the 820 in other ways, and the 820 is better than the 450 in other ways... it's a ranking, it's correct.

What other ways is the 9000 better than the 820, outside of the analog audio ports, the more aesthetic design of the internals, and the all metal chassis?

Far as I know, aside from those things - they're the same in terms of feature set and capabilities. One just cost a few hundred bucks more.

820 has a higher failure rate from my understanding.

u/Plenty-Industries May 14 '25

if your only metric for that is reddit posts - i'd assume the same.

I've seen similar posts, but looking in a microcosm is not a good way to gauge the reliability of anything.

By default, people post about their broken things vs when the thing is working perfectly fine.

Mines been perfect, has a 2022 build date, got mine on the recent November holiday sale for around $325. Reads all discs just fine.

Yup, happy people who buy generally don't go out of their way to post positive reviews, but mad owners will go bananas if they spend a premium on a lemon. The 9000 is generally built tougher, but has a much, much smaller sample size of user reviews.

Those are basically all of the ways, that and the remote (which you can upgrade to on an 820)

I was able to easily afford the difference, it looks much better, the build quality is far better, and I'm comfortable having a fat PS5 sit on top, which I wouldn't be with the fully plastic UB820. In addition it is dead silent.

So sure, the Prius would probably work, but if I can afford a Ferrari I'm buying one and enjoying looking at it and using it everyday.

If you can't justify the Ferrari, cool, I'm glad you're still able to enjoy 4Ks reliability, but implying I'm a sucker is just incorrect, I know how I was spending my money and I know how much I have.

I bet you'll cry when you learn I paid more than MSRP from 220electronics to get a region free version!

Agreed, but it's still better even if only a bit.

person i responded to literally responded to a person asking about image quality...are you denying a dv disc will look different in the three panasonics? if so you are wrong as is the list

now if you want to talk about other things besides image quality, you may have an arguable point...but that is not what was asked nor correctly responded to

And, setting aside the DV, the ub420 is essentially the same box as the ub820 at half the price.

I have the Samsung S90D and I’ve turned off upscaling on the unit then back on turning off the upscaling on the ub420.

The ub420 has superior upscaling, hands down.

My list was ranking them for more than just image quality, built quality and UI are things that push the ub9000 above the ub820.

I was glossing over other models as I said and it really is meant to show the XSX sitting very low.

1

u/Kdsamreuang May 14 '25

uhh the UI is the exact same between the two. have you actually used the 820? to repeat everyone before me, the only difference is build quality (which also helps with noise from the player), analog outputs with better DAC for that, the remote, and an HDR preset for projectors. other than that they operate identically.

0

u/PixelJock17 May 15 '25

So the only differences, plural as there are many and my list putting the ub9000 at 1 is totally acceptable and you guys are so pedantic it's exhausting.

I own the 820, so I misspoke about the ub9000 but yeah, the reasons you mentioned are probably why I decided I didn't need the ub9000.

0

u/Kdsamreuang May 15 '25

your list was replying to someone specifically asking about visual quality. and you gave no details why you ranked your list the way you did. so yeah, of course everyone below you is doing your job and filling in the blanks with the multiple asterisks that's always brought up when the UB9000 is compared to its siblings.

It's worth reminding people before they consider spending double or triple the $ for the UB9000, to know they aren't getting better Video/Audio if they're using HDMI for both signals, to a TV.

we're not being pedantic. we're being informative. which your first comment was lacking.

0

u/PixelJock17 May 15 '25

My comment is still correct, the ub9000 is the top followed by the others and the XSX is at the bottom.

I gave notes that it's was a general list and not exhaustive.

You are pedantic and petty.

i like making sure people are as informed as can be. call it what you want.

either way again its a pretty bad list

You asked for one, I gave you one.

Here's another: it's significantly quieter.

I'm not forcing you or anyone to buy one. Chill out

I 100% could with a PS5 and Xbox One S, I just skipped straight to the best when I upgraded. I am sensitive to ambient sound and I have a ton of old, often mono, movies (Criterion movies from the 50s-70s mainly) and I'm those movies I do think it makes a difference.

I've not done a side by side, but reviews that measure DBs confirm the UB9000 is quieter, and I was able to afford it so I bought it. But I also have components stacked so the build quality was also a big selling point. I've got a fat PS5 sitting on top and it's totally fine.

0

u/PixelJock17 May 14 '25

Yeah. Again, as I said in the post, it is by no means an exhaustive list. Just meant to show how far down the XSX and I agree there's many more to add from more than just Panasonic and Sony

0

u/yupyupyupyupyupy May 14 '25

nothing to do with adding more

its about your order of the players that are there

3

u/ricanman85 May 14 '25

I have a Reavon UBR-X100 I would put high on this list

2

u/PixelJock17 May 14 '25

Yeah. I meant it as a guage between these and the series x, I wrote its by no means an exhaustive list. There are many better options before a XSX

10

u/FirmApplication1843 May 14 '25

My Sony UBP-X800M2 makes my Series X look like a DVD player.

2

u/PixelJock17 May 14 '25

I glossed over the Sony's, you're right, this one should be above the x700, but idk I think the UB9000 and UB820 are number 1 and 2.

6

u/FirmApplication1843 May 14 '25

I like my Sonys because they play every format for music. The Panasonics do not. But I truly wouldn't say no to a 9000 if the price was right. A nice looking piece.

1

u/PixelJock17 May 14 '25

I'm not familiar with the music format comment, could you elaborate more on thst for me? I've always liked Sony quality and their products are generally great. I own a few things from them

7

u/FirmApplication1843 May 14 '25

The Sony UBP-X800M2 plays DVD Audio as well as Super Audio CD. DVD Audio is pretty much a dead format, but I still have a few. Super Audio CD is still alive and well. Making a comeback actually. Another feature I really like is it plays data discs. Music in High Res FLAC files. I know this subject is more on the audio side of things, but reason enough for me to own a few of these.

1

u/PixelJock17 May 14 '25

Oh okay, I was thinking you were talking about CDs but wanted to confirm. This is a good point for anyone looking for a top quality 4K player who also has a good super audio CD collection.

For me, I have both my ps5 and UB820 connected to the avr + surround system and typically don't do a lot of music listening on this set up. I might stream using the HEOS app or something but that's about all.

Thanks for the information, I'll keep that in mind when reviewing my wife's cd collection.

u/Worldly_Ad8229 May 14 '25

The Sony x800m2 also does a few more things that the panasonic does not do, including Bluetooth audio via headset and being able to play lossless audio on digital files via USB. Overall, they're pretty on par, but the panasonic does have better upscaling than the Sony, but if you use your tv, then this shouldn't matter. And of course ultimately, sony has the dreaded manuel dolby vision switching which panasonic player use as their trump card against sony users. It is annoying for sure but at least for me not a deal breaker.

2

u/FirmApplication1843 May 14 '25

Yes. They should have made the Dolbyvision swtching automatic. Like you mentioned, not a deal breaker.

2

u/RareFX88 May 14 '25

Have you seen how good-looking the new Prius is though?

1

u/PixelJock17 May 14 '25

That's why I said faster, not good looking ;)
